    So cool to see Eddie do a Clapton solo as Clapton did it. I expected him to starting squawking and tapping but he went old school and it sounded damn good.

    Sure wish Clapton could play old Cream, but his chips are long gone. Ed 's chops never left him. Guy was always incredible, on pace, and in tune.

      I think Clapton could still play old Cream until like a decade ago, he just couldn't be bothered to do it. He went into a more minimalist, blues rock singer-songwriter route ever since he went solo. Since then, he prefers slower, more soulful playing rather than his earlier virtuosic stuff. Dude still had it, just check his "I Shot the Sheriff" solo at Crossroads 2004, I think it probably is the best solo I've ever heard from him.

    I wish Eddie would play more blues...Nice to see him tone down the dive bombs and tapping and get to his roots...The tastiest chops of his playing has always been the little blues he squeezes in between the madness.

      Clapton kinda squashed his confidence regarding blues playing.
      Eddie did a collab with Brian May in the 80s and recorded one "blues" track as an homage to Clapton. Once Eric heard it, he said they "couldn't play" the blues.

    VH does covers better than any band I've ever heard. Everything they touch becomes bigger and better than the originals. Yet, I've never heard a band do VH much justice when being covered.....that says alot.

    This is exactly why Ed is so far superior to all the other great players that are blues based (Hendrix, SRV, Page, Clapton) ...he can do everything they do with ease...without breaking a sweat...but not one of them could play half the stuff he plays...you could give him any one of their songs to play and he would play it note for note with ease...you give any of them Mean Streets, I'm the One, Spanish Fly, Eruption, and on and on and they would be be able to play half of it.

      @@ritarollins6664 you can hear how easily he can play arguable Claptons best stuff. I mean he literally plays this note for note seamlessly. Regardless of Claptons dislike of Edward's style and playing, can you imagine Hendrix or Clapton trying to play I'm The One? They wouldn't even get through the first half. Listen to isolated guitar track for I'm the One and tell me that any of those guys could do that. No chance

    • @ralphcroce9077

      exactly right. same holds for YM, Paul G, MAB, etc. With all due respect to the older rockers, the guys from Eddie forward, are just technically far better. It pains me to say it, because I am attached to Jimi as a singular cultural icon of my youth. But I have to "face the face", as PT said. today's shredders are light years better than the older generation, who NEVER NEEDED to do what today's shredders do. The bar was so much lower. And one more thing while I'm at this: IMO Page is overrated, as is EC. Jeff Beck, IMO also WAY overrated. My love for Jimi is just for what he did to break new ground. Without Jimi, Eddie et al don't happen, or happen much later.

    I assume you mean sweep picking.
    The only one close to Ed out of those 3 is Clapton because he was Ed's main inspiration and it's where a lot of Ed's technique comes from.
    BB King is a master guitarist but it's all about the blues with him.
    Page is by far the most overrated guitarist in history. I laugh every time I see that Stairway To Heaven was voted #1 for greatest guitar solo, I could name 20 right now that blow it away.

    Versions of Crossroad ranked by me
    Robert Johnson
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Cream
    I still think Skynyrd's version was way more bombastic than the mighty Cream. And I don't just throw that out there to be confrontational. I love and HIGHLY respect Eric, Jack and Ginger. But Ronnie and the boys were on point the night they recorded it for One More From The Road.
    But no matter who is playing it, it's a great song to jam to.

    im not having a "my guitarist is better than your guitarist".
    the winterland solo is overplayed, the beauty of it is because it was improvised. I think its been overplayed for the last 40 years. I would have been much more entertained if EVH had come up with his own solo.
    But i guess you cant blame him, Van Halen isn't Cream and they werent doing the full song.

    Did I say that Ed didn't get his tapping idea from Page? No, I didn't. I said Ed got most of his technique from Clapton. I didn't specify which parts of his techniques. And as far as the Stairway solo being the best..........anything ever composed by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai & Paul Gilbert blow it out of the water....not to mention at least half of EVH's solos.

      12 years later responding to yeah...Yeah, I often think Eddie would have been a better player if the Floyd rose had never been invented. He'd have to have chilled bit with the dive bombs and harmonic horsie things. He kind of became a caricature of himself sometime i the late 80's. It' so refreshing to see a solo from him with no tapping and no dive bombs. Think of a solo like Little Dreamer from the first album that has maybe one dive bomb and no tapping..and it's great.

    EVH is definitely a great guitarist and I had always considered him one of the best of my generation, but I would respect him a lot more if he played more on his own with some of the other greats. Some here saying he grew up playing Clapton, BB King and other classic blues songs. But has he played with any of them much? If so, point me to some UA-cam clips. I can find many other great guitarist playing with the legends; John Mayer for one (take your shots, but he is great! and plays a lot with those legends!). I think Eddie has pigeon-holed himself in the 'heavy metal' genre (although much of VH is what I would call 'pop metal'). And to play with a character like DLR also brings him down in my eyes - but hey, it's made him a ton of money and that must be what he likes (that genre & the money - nothing wrong with that). But I would have much more respect for EVH if he played with Clapton (ever played at Clapton's Crossroads Fest?), BB King, Buddy Guy, etc.

    • @LongDrivesAtNight5150
      @LongDrivesAtNight5150 9 років тому

      ***** Personally, I have never considered VH a heavy metal band or a pop metal band. To me they are simply a great 'rock n roll band'. :) This next statement always causes a fuss with many people, the DLR era was great album wise, some great shows live back in the day(the nights DLR actually tried and wasn't wasted)...but it was over and should have stayed over. So I will agree with you somewhat about him playing with DLR. I saw this tour and was surprised DLR wasn't too bad for 'being Dave', but so glad I did not go to a 2012 show and won't bother with them now either. Also saw them in 91, 93 and 95 with Sammy. If you look up an interview with Eddie done at the Smithsonian Institute, Eddie talks about him being into Eric Clapton during his Cream days but lost interest in him after that.

    • @0sumgamezzz435
      @0sumgamezzz435 7 років тому +3

      Eddie has always maintained that his devotion is to Van Halen. He has a truly single-minded focus when it comes to his band. He has done some side work with Brian May and has guested on a few other artists projects. Obviously Eddie does not enjoy or want to play those festivals that you spoke of, or he would do so, I suppose. I will take my shots on John Mayer not that he is bad ----- he's great. But to compare his impact and contributions to the electric guitar to Eddie's is either a sign of your ignorance or bias. If your generation is late 70's to mid eighties guitarists ---- he may not be your cup of tea, but Eddie was the face of that generations' axemen in terms of influence and in terms of young guys picking up an electric guitar or a pool cue for that matter and learning how to play "Eruption," note for note. Pool players as everyone knows ---- have a distinct aversion to "Your Body is a Wonderland." When that changes, then we'll mention John Mayer in the same paragraph as Edward Van Halen.

      clapton was too good to play with eddie even in the 80s he met him an unrelated event and was too good to play with him. eddie played with holdsworth who was basically 1 billion times (conservatively) the guitarist that Claptin is or was whatever the hell hes doing now. its mainly claptin that prevented it happening.
