I think I've always wanted to advance my Spanish - even more so after I graduated as a double major with one of those majors being Spanish. I think one of the best ways to learn any language is to spend some time in a country that speaks that particular language - so, that's what I did! Of course, I could have gone anywhere but for some reason I wanted to go to the DR and the experience was great! I lived there for 2 1/2 years. Of course, spanish accents and expressions can differ depending on the country and I find them interesting to learn :)
If you're someone learning Spanish, I believe you can go from beginner to advanced in no time if you're dedicated!

I've been learning Spanish for a little while now and Dominican Spanish is by far most confusing. Their everyday speech is mostly slang and expressions, the type of stuff you won't find in the typical Spanish book. My 1st time in the DR my in-law was like "pasame la vainita" and I didn't have a clue wtf she was talking about. Turns out she was referring to a little binder clip and "vaina" could mean damn near anything. smh
DaBrute Lol yes its so difficult . I speak Spanish But I am trying to Learn more of Dominican slang . Ughhh They shorten so many words and I would understand 2 out of 10!

don't feel bad i am Honduran and even I can't understand them sometimes every country has their slang but Dominicans are known for being a little extreme with speaking really fast and the slang but its worth learning some of it they have really interesting culture and if your planning a trip

Hi, you guys are great! I am Dominican myself but not so great with all of the slang and there's still a lot of "dominican phrases/expressions" that I would like to learn/know. I am good at speaking spanish and also a great learner. Could you guys possibly help me someway where I could learn more of the spanish spoken in the DR? And not just formal but also slang and everyday language. Thanks so much! x

Gary says that about me all that time :p I've gotten better, but "carro" used to like "caro" coming out of my mouth. I wouldn't be surprised if it still sounds like this today. Hahaha :p

Very good observation! I was a double major during my undergrad, with one of those majors being Spanish as well. There are a number of differences of how Spanish is spoken in different countries. So, it's always good to take note when you spot these kinds of observations. My school mainly focused on the way Spanish is spoken in Mexico and Spain, however, I took it upon myself to start paying attention to other countries, particularly in the caribbean.
Yea, I assume its safe to say that most schools probably do focus on teaching Spanish that way. Now that I'm thinking about it though, I think I had one class that briefly covered different accents. I think it was my linguistics class. As far as diversity, that's why I love to travel, and that's one aspect that makes where I'm at now (new york) pretty cool.
It has its good and bad aspects, that's for sure. I definitely wouldn't encourage everyone to move here, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to visit and see what all the fuss is about! New York City has a population of over 8 million people. That's a lot of people compared to where I'm from, which has a population of only a little over 197,000. From a few "dangerous cities" lists provided by MSN, Huffington Post, and Forbes, New York isn't even in the top 10. However, with a city filled with more than 8 million people, that would explain why there would be more reports of crime. Overall, not a bad place. NY has a culture of its own and I can truly say, out of the other states I lived in and visited, there's no place quite like New York! hahaha

I love all spanish accent. I'm from Acapulco & I used to be embarrassed of my people's accent , now I am proud to show it off though I don't carry it on since I was raised in California since I was a baby. Anways I want to learn all foreign spanish accent💕

Hello! Do you have any resources you'd like to suggest for Dominican Spanish (particularly how it differs from Peninsular/other dialects of Spanish) and/or Dominican culture? While I'm sure I'll be learning some along the way, this is for novel research. I need to be accurate in my portrayal but I'm not sure where to look. Thanks for reading!

Nic Espinosa Hi there! That's definitely a topic for debate. Are you referring to the Canary Islands, which happen to be Spain's? Please tell more. I've researched this a few times, but since it was personal research and not something I was going to turn in for school or publish, I don't remember my specific exact findings. Nevertheless, one thing I will say is that ALL languages spoken in the Caribbean, whether that be French, Spanish, English, or any other language that is spoken in the Caribbean, they all have their unique sounds, slang, and even at times since of grammar, as we know that the Caribbean area was an interest of many countries and an area where many slaves were taken. Food, music, culture, and language have been influenced by many different countries; however the base for their languages obviously comes from another country, minus those that actually do have their own language.

Hi there! Thanks for your comment! You know, I would say that's a good question. Maybe you could consider it that. There are some things I say for sure would be Dominican slang, but not necessarily all the things that you might only hear in the DR. It would be a good idea to ask a few different people just to get a general consensus, and it would be great if others weighed in with their opinions. In general, we know that Spanish is the official language, but however, similar to English, there are numerous things that we say that are not said in other English speaking countries. However, at the same time, we wouldn't say that the way, for example, Australians talk is Australian slang. It's just simply how they speak English in Australia, which happens to include a variety of expressions that Americans don't use, nor does it sound how Americans sound, but again we wouldn't say that just Australian slang. Even in different regions of the U.S., we have our own accents and expressions. I'm from the South and you hear tons of people that say "yall" all the time. However, no one classifies that as southern slang but it's definitely a southern thing to say in my opinion. Every country that speaks Spanish, has their own their own accent and particular way of speaking Spanish. I hope this helps somehow!

+Aysia Milaan Hi Aysia! :) Unfortunately, I cannot respond with proven research. I am not fond of providing responses based off of pure opinion. I'm sure there are many that can weigh in - I just hope they weigh in with evidence, research, or sources and not just providing thoughts that come from the top of their head. However, I can say that I am pretty certain that just like many carribbean islands and areas, there are many influences in their culture and language.
As soon as I heard him speak Spanish I knew exactly what you meant.
