If Brian Wilson calls you the "best bass player in the world", you ARE. Period. Who cares if she doesn't remember everything EXACTLY how it happened. Love Carol all day long.
@@nopeteys2424 She was actually a professional jazz guitarist and started doing studio sessions to earn money for her family. She became a bass player just accidentally because the bass player didn’t turn up and she replaced him for that session. She liked playing the bass so much that she mostly stuck to the bass as a session musician. But she was a very good and talented guitar player and played in jazz clubs from a very young age. I don’t think most bass players were that good on the guitar
People please remember she is a very fluid and capable jazz guitar player. She is deserving of great respect and the best consider her a master musician and she the goods to prove it.
Thank you carol. I love all the music of my days the 60's and you are such a big peace of that. So glad I got to see you on you tube. I can't thank you enough. You are and AMERICAN ICON.
I love the enthusiasm Carol has when talking about all the records she has played on in the past. This is a great interview I have enjoyed hearing. Thanks for sharing. :-)
Major respect. What a cool lady.... The 'interviewer' should shut up when she's playing..every time she starts showing us some riff or line he cuts her short.... that's the time to listen dude !!!
Carol, You have been amazing people for years...I admire that bass you are playing the Ibanez SRX 700 which are not produced any more...I liked the 1st one I bought so much, I bought A 2ND ONE. ...YOU OWN A HUNDRED BASSES. and you know quality for certain!!! I really enjoy these conversations from your vast number of sessions. Please do more of them!!!
When you consider all the great hits she played on and the varied genres of music she accentuated, she stands as one of the greatest. The Wrecking Crew was a group that had to happen for the music of the 60's to be complete.
Just last week, two days before her 86th birthday, nearly 10 years afte rthis interview video we had the pleasure of chatting with the great Carol once again and ask her about her 10 favoriet songs .. and she had great stories to tell .. enjoy!! www.mixcloud.com/weekendfest/week-end-mixtape-24-carol-kaye/
Carol has a copy of a re-use check for Good Vibrations on her website. Ray Pohlman played on the first of 13 sessions and Carol played on the other 12. That's her on GV.
What has never been questioned is her musicianship, she was a great player, she would never have worked at all if she wasn't. She had absolutely no need to exaggerate her claims beyond what she actually did.
Session notes on album liners are sometimes incorrect. I've seen a bunch of musicians say they were listed on songs they didn't play on and omitted from songs they did play on. She kept her own records of sessions.
I've known Carol on a personal basis for over a decade and I can vouch for her integrity and honesty. Go to her website and see the checks youself. Click on Library and then Photo Gallery and you'll see the re-use checks for GV from the American Federation of Musicians union. I'll beleve that over some third party Internet message board. You can email her personally if you want.
I commented on some video with Carol and she sent me a reply talking about technique and playing the whole chord notationaly. I couldn't have been more honored and was floored that she replied to me personally. Carol is the best,I love her completely.
@runnersdialzero333 i just want to second this. it's hard to believe that the actual beach boys could play good vibrations without all the session cats, but the evidence shows that they played a very creditable live version.
Yes, but keep in mind "sessionographies" can sometimes be in error. It would not surprise me if there was an error here or there in the records considering the number of sessions for the song and the number of musicians present on each date, unprecedented at the time, and since really.
She played this line on some sessions for Good Vibrations, but according to the sessionography she was actually NOT on the final GV edit!!!! So she has never played on the GV single which is so recognisable.
@runnersdialzero333 the 2 best incarantions livewise of the boys were the earfly garage speed rock hard driving live band they were with brian and the 70s band with mike and ricky and so on.
on the SmileySmile board there was given evidence that none of her session cuts actually made the final single edit. So altough she attended some of the (very many) GV sessions, it appears that none of those sessions provided any of the sections for the single everyone knows. Apparently she has been talking about sessions she never attended (and this can be verified by other session musicians who clearly attended the session). her honesty is questioned by some in the business.
@DashiellCabasa "Where as the 'so called band'... umm... total pains lol" Not quite. Give a listen to any live version of "Good Vibrations" - those kids totally had the chops to pull of great versions of these songs. They weren't as good as the Wrecking Crew, but who was? Seriously.
So what's the theory? She can't possibly be telling the truth about these sessions because, um, uh, well, she a chick! That's it! The nerve of this lesser talent claiming credit of the REAL players. Dude, look at her entire CV that is independently verified by studios, record companies and TV producers. In the 70's and 80's you probably heard more Carol Kaye than any other electric bass player recorded!
ok- i love Carol, i really do,but either she has become senile(no offense).or she just plain LIES... she was NOT on Surfin USA,that was the original Beach Boy lneup. she's also told whoppers concerning her playing dates that was Jamerson, and thats just WRONG...even Joe Osborne said she's lying and doesnt himself understand why she's lying
If you had played on as many artists songs and recordings as she has, don't you think maybe you'd forget some songs that you had been on and maybe think you played on them? Give her a break dude, she is class A and a top notch musician.
uh, yeah, she's making all this stuff up. 'carol kaye', or whatever her actual name is, has been outed as a crank since she came out in the 90's. she may have stalked the beach boys, but that's it. check snopes.
@brooker712008 Yeah! She's even enthusiastic about the songs she claims that she plays on even though there is proof that she didn't. Carol is a great part of rock history and certainly played on many great records, but she is full of it and refuses to admit that she is wrong about things even when evidence is provided. If she is called on it, she gets defensive. In that regard, she is crap.
If Brian Wilson calls you the "best bass player in the world", you ARE. Period. Who cares if she doesn't remember everything EXACTLY how it happened. Love Carol all day long.
This chick has been hip for 60+ years. No joke.
A down to earth, salt of the earth talent.
She truly rocks! Love you Carol!
Her playing those Beach Boys riffs makes my hair stand on end. :)
Totally!
One of the all time greatest.
she's known for her bass playing but she is an UNBELIEVABLY good Jazz guitarist too!!
Pat most of those session bassists could also shred guitar too, they needed to be versatile to work on different things

Thank's for the post and to Carol for giving her time. She is so entertaining and cool in a down to earth way!
Thank you carol. I love all the music of my days the 60's and you are such a big peace of that. So glad I got to see you on you tube. I can't thank you enough. You are and AMERICAN ICON.

They were always playing. She was there and some claim that she wasn't. Carol IS Madame bass player. Good to hear he talk about it AND play her stuff.
I love the enthusiasm Carol has when talking about all the records she has played on in the past. This is a great interview I have enjoyed hearing. Thanks for sharing. :-)

An amazing musician!
Carol Kaye Rules!
Wonderful. Thanks to both you and Carol.
she would be the coolest music teacher
She is a teacher. She wrote different educational books on bass and guitar and gave online private courses
An absolute AMERICAN ICON!!! If you don't know who this is.........LEARN HER NAME!

Wonderful!! Thanks!!
She is absolutely amazing.
I luv Carol Kaye she's awesome
What a woman. And plays with a pick. With style.
This is a GREAT interview! The BEST part however is the jiggle belt exercise machine in the background!

Respect.
She’s the best. Found my mentor to try and learn e.bass. Buy her books!
What has never been questioned is her musicianship, she was a great player, she would never have worked at all if she wasn't. She had absolutely no need to exaggerate her claims beyond what she actually did.
A musical inspiration.
over 10000 recordings WOW

stevebiederman I would like to have her email address, she's a great bassist.
I commented on some video with Carol and she sent me a reply talking about technique and playing the whole chord notationaly. I couldn't have been more honored and was floored that she replied to me personally. Carol is the best,I love her completely.

I'm so pissed he cut in before she started shredding on guitar....
Carol should have played bass on the 50'th anniversary tour
What a cute little Gibson SG!
It's not questioned by Brian Wilson or Chuck Britz (engineer). Who "in the business" is questioning?
Yes, but keep in mind "sessionographies" can sometimes be in error. It would not surprise me if there was an error here or there in the records considering the number of sessions for the song and the number of musicians present on each date, unprecedented at the time, and since really.

to get the full picture get or UA-cam the dvd "endless harmony a great career retrospective and answers a lot of questions about the Beach Boys
The delay is bad but the content is solid.
cool : )
Ohhh myy godddddddddddddddddddddd
what songs did she not play on that she claimed she did?
Who in the hell were the three people that disliked this? Obviously know nothing about music. imho
What make of guitars has she?
Don't ask her anything about Denny Tedesco's film! She'll bite your head off!!!
The interviewer kept cutting Carol off and didn't seem to care about many of her answers.
The "click"
Well, not really the 70s or 80s because she stopped doing rock dates by the early 70s. She definitely dominated the late 50s and all of the 60s.
on the SmileySmile board there was given evidence that none of her session cuts actually made the final single edit. Since wrecking crew movie Carol is finally getting the adulation she deserves
Yes - so true... This amazing person and musician definitely deserves to be known as one of the greatest ever 🔥
"you know the fuck word" :P
Ohh
talk about a "good" mistake (referring to slide bass).....Wow....
7:00
Heheheh ! You're funny.
By the way, Snopes says you don't exist.
that means you have super powers of talking to the dead, or that your dead yourself and talking to those of still alive. which is it?
@DashiellCabasa "Where as the 'so called band'... umm... total pains lol"

How do you "know" this?? Were you there? Perhaps the person who told you that is lying? Even Joe?
Uh, yeah, that means I'm real. Doofus.
uh, yeah, she's making all this stuff up. 'carol kaye', or whatever her actual name is, has been outed as a crank since she came out in the 90's. she may have stalked the beach boys, but that's it. check snopes.
