Akira Yamaoka, said in the interview for Silent Hill 2 soundtrack (IIRC), that he had to do this mixture of feelings, since, in order to know sadness, we also have to had experienced Happiness. But this one, in SH3, really hits the base when it comes to it.
End of Small Sanctuary is not just my favourite Silent Hill/Akira Yamoaka track, but it's also possibly my favourite piece of music ever. It feels like it knows my soul.

Akira Yamoaka is a genius for managing to capture that in one short song.
