  • Welcome to the Levine Hearing FAQs with Madison Levine, BC-HIS ⬇️
Question- How should you clean your ears yourself at home?
Answer- It depends on your health history. Professional ear cleaning is always a safe choice, and we LOVE cleaning ears safely and comfortably at Levine Hearing. We use several methods depending on the issue at hand.
This video explains how to irrigate your ears at home. If you are diabetic, are on blood thinners, have a history of a hole in your eardrum or have had a recent infection or surgery, do NOT irrigate. See an Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist to address any wax concerns. If you do not have any of those issues, we recommend using an ear irrigation syringe, which you can find for a couple of bucks at your nearby pharmacy or at Levine Hearing. Following are the steps for using an ear irrigation syringe:-
Step 1: Take a cup of lukewarm water and add a cup of hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar if you like. Distilled water is also a great choice.
Step 2: Empty the bulb, put it in the water, and suck the water into the bulb.
Step 3: Take the tip and put it into your ear canal over a sink or in the shower.
Step 4: Flush the water into your ear.
By flushing the water into your ear, the water will go in and run back out. The friction is going to move the wax and let it wash out.
NOTE: Flush the water 15-20 times into your ear.

Get an Elephant Ear. Much easier and very effective. Also, pre-soften the wax by adding baby oil before bed, for 3-4 days prior.

I love the elephant ear. That is excellent for home use and I used it in my office years ago. Many people already have a baby syringe at home which is why I recommend it.

Step 1 of the written instructions requires a cup of hydrogen peroxide yet in your excellent video requires only a cap of hydrogen peroxide. Which is it? A cup or a cap? A cup of HP seems a lot. An excellent video and you are so charming.

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll look at the caption. I think a cap full is sufficient!

Wouldn’t that process be dangerous for your ear drum. I thought putting water in your ears was not good. Swimmers put on ear plugs to prevent that. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Great question. First, we ensure that the eardrum is intact and there is no history of a hole in the eardrum. Second, we only use distilled, purified water so we know we are not introducing any new bacteria to the ear. And third, we use an ear dryer (like a hair dryer for ears!), to ensure that we don't leave water behind. But also, the vast majority of people are not going to be prone to an ear infection simply because water got in their ear. We shower and swim without earplugs regularly. Open bodies of water like a river, lake, or even a contaminated swimming pool are the usual places that bacteria is introduced to the ear, causing an ear infection. Thank you for the question!

This is not correct, the squeezing bulb pointing to the eardrum is not the right recommendation as the pressure will just hit the eardrum and may break it. The safest tip is the one doesn't spray straight but goes a little sideways, they hit the wall of your ear-canal and drive wax out. You need the water tumbling action around the ear canal, and not the direct hit like was shown on this video. Can be more harm than good. Buy a specific tool/tip for the job.

Why not use a normal syringe? At least i can clean the syringe. This thing is kinda nasty

I support the use of a regular syringe! That is perfectly fine.
