Thanks Tony. I forgot to mention the quick way to release the strap which was brought up by another viewer. See his comment below.

Sometimes I like to ride with clips and straps, like the old days. When I put Look pedals on my old steel Allez, I saved my Atom 600 pedals and Christophe clips and straps. It's fun to use them when I'm not worried about traffic. Someday I'm going to buy a vintage steel Motobecane and install these full-time.

The first time I rode with the old clip pedals, I almost took out 5 other riders and the first stop light! They were a challange.

This is the hardest thing to deal with on vintage bikes for me .. cage pedals and toe clips/straps. In 1980 when I got my first Colnago (Super) this is all we had, by the time I stopped amateur racing at the end of the 80’s I had pretty good knee problems by that time and was constantly messing with my cleat angles to try and help. Since taking cycling back up in my late 50’s I haven’t had the same knee problems using Look Keo clipless pedals with 4 degree float cleats, but on my current 85’ Colnago Master and 86’ Specialized Allez projects they just don’t look right with my Look clipless pedals, so the Colnago has Campy SR cage pedals and the Allez has MKS cage pedals .. both with toe clips, I have Vittoria 1976 classic shoes with vintage style cleats, and am thinking of sanding/filing the slots in the cleats wider so I have some kind of float so I don’t mess my knees up again riding these bikes, what do you think? Great channel btw .. really inspired me for my own restorations .. so thanks 🙏

Hi Chris, sorry for the late reply. We are in the process of relocating and I'm not getting all my comments. I don't know if I would file the slots in the cleats unless you are able to replace them if it doesn't turn out right. You just want to make sure your foot will stay in the pedal. Good idea though.

One of the reasons I took my toe straps off was because the design of today's athletic shoes are much wider than they used to be. The straps were just too short for my fat foot. Just lately, I bought some fabric straps and they are much longer and work much better.

Yes, I noticed the same thing. My foot is not long but it is wide. If I ride with the straps, I have them as loose as as possible. Thanks for the comment! 👍👊

You don't have to reach down and squeeze to release you just push down on the upper side of the buckle and it loosens just like that, it's made like so in case you need to release really quick in an emergency, just fyi..
