Hi Andy good review enjoyed it. I recently took my bike in for a service, they loaned me the shotgun and i loved it. On return to the dealers to collect my bike i brought the shotgun there and then, I've done quite a few miles now and the brakes are more than adequate for this type of bike. It's only a bit heavy putting it in the garage but when riding the weight goes away. I love it, would recommend to anyone.
I'm 73 years old and 5 foot 3, not a problem to ride and one of the best bikes to filter in traffic with.
I have owned 66 bikes so far from 180 bhp to 20 bhp so have alot of experience.
Keep the videos going.
Dave from Essex.
Cheers Dave, will do!
Hi Andy just rode one recently for my UA-cam channel and I found it quite nice and a well finished as you said. I think they're going in the right direction. Good to see you riding in my normal weather type for reviews. Cheers Caledonian Biker.
P.S. Will you be at the NEC Bike Show?
Haven’t watched many of your vids for a while cos I’m not in the market to change but thought I’d watch this. Nice bike. May I say Andy you are a refreshing change from many UA-camrs that seem to only want to thrash the arse out of every bike they try and rate them only really in performance terms. Your real world ride in the wet at everyday speed is a lot more relevant. 👍
Yeah, there's a few channels I no longer watch due to poor riding, and thinking power/bhp is what counts.
Well thank you very much - I ride bikes for the thrill yes but I try and keep speed in check, it's all about taking in the countryside for me (I get that some just love "skids and wheelies")....
just bought a new petrol leaf blower, it's awesome, blew me away 😁
Ouch
Rode this bike and instantly liked it. Promotes pleasant, relaxing ride offering rather splendid sound. Agree with you brakes are woody, offer no feel. Paint scheemes did not catch my eye. But at this price I see it as a perfect base for customisation project... Cheers from Poland
Yes I agree - perfect for customising….
Hopefully when they do come out with the Classic 650 they chrome a Shotgun up and use the Interceptor clocks. 😎
I should also add I'm 6ft 1 with a 35inch leg and I fit great on the shotgun for any tall people wondering
I'm tall and long legged too and I felt the same!
My respect for riding on those roads in the wet. They looked slick. Well done , you’re a braver man than me. Then again I live in AUS where it never rains in most areas 😁
I'm very used to riding in the rain!
You only loose about 30% grip in the rain.
I test road the Shotgun 650 after I rode the Himalayan 450. I loved the Shotgun, it felt, as you say, a very relaxed ride. Plenty of power, but doesn’t push you to want to use all the power. I can’t imagine the long awaited Classic 650 will be much different to ride, perhaps a few cosmetic changes, instrument cluster differences and likely a different exhaust and respective tone. But all in all, I think this is a modern day Classic. A lot of bike for not a lot of money.
Think you meant 648cc not 548 🙂
I love the Shotgun, I rode a Himalayan, interceptor and a shotgun and the shotgun was by far my fave!
The demo bike i rode had aftermarket pipes and it sounded awesome!
Would love one as a second bike! Hopefully one day!
I never knew 47bhp could be so much fun!
I think every biker should give the royal enfield range a try and ignore the spec sheets.
One thing that never gets mentioned is the service costs. Absolute bargain service costs wise compared to other brands.
My local dealer charges £240 for the big service and about £110 for the intermediate service
Thanks for that - and yes, slip o the tongue re the capacity - Soz!
I was the same Himalayan 450 first...loved it! Then the shotgun took it to a whole other level with an aching grin by the time I'd got back....beautiful
I thought the same. I even checked on the transcript which agreed with me. 🙂
Nice review. I like the look of those Enfield. Still need to test one though.
Personally i also like this type of bike, I had a Vulcan 650 year's ago but I never got on with this feet forward lark. Visiting my local Enfield/Kawasaki dealer in Preston i was shown an Eliminator in a rather fetching matt black finish. Its only a 500, infact a 451, but it's way lighter than the Enfield with a low seat, mid pegs and a sporting engine. The clutch is feather light, the suspension is good as are the brakes and tyres, i have to say for under 6 grand i was mightily impressed.
Yes gret value isn't it....
I think I would take the V7 Stone for £7k+ personally
I do like the passenger seat removal to reveal a luggage rack. Great idea.
Thank you for this 1st ride review Mr Flyer, on a bike much like yourself, I wasn't that impressed by initially. But having seen one or two around it is starting to appeal to me. Definitely agree with the twin dials for the cockpit, that would really finish that front view off.
Or the dial from the new Himalayan would also be a winner….
Apart from the rear mudguard design I think it looks great
Like you, I'm not a 'cruiser' fan, but, also like you, I rather like the shotgun.
I'd call it a 'bobber' style bike.
Great bike, really enjoyed doing my test ride/review on it.
Great show again, thank you very much 🙏🏼.
The Shotgun is the very first of Royal Enfield's models that really attracts me. I testrode it some weeks ago, loved it instantly and think it's perfect for a chilling cruise after work or lazy roaming on scenic roads on the weekend.
I'd like to have one, but need to get rid of one of the other bikes for limited garage space. So I'm in the painful process of decision making 🙄
Welcome to my world Peter - it's hard to let bikes go isn't it....
As someone who does all his own maintenance I prefer the cables where I can get at them easily.
Oh never been a Royal Enfield type of chap but like the look of that! Great review Andy 👏
Really? I'm surprised. I wouldn't have thought this would be up your alley at all Chopsie!! Thanks for watching given that....
Agreed it’s a good looking bike
They should still be making firearms but theyr're doing a bang up job with motorcycles these days. RE can basically put a motorcycle in most enthusiast hands for a decent price.
The Shotgun is growing on me, though I think RE should have come out with a legitimate Classic/Bullet 650 first.
I test rode this bike. Compared to some other cruisers like the Rebel it feels quite different, less-cruiser like. :) The look is very attractive. I agree about the clutch being a bit heavy. The brakes were mediocre and the ABS kicked in very soon, but other than that a very nice bike for the money. Not among the lightest in the category. :) We should be aware that this is not an expensive bike. Nice video, just like always.
Yes cracking value for what you get with this!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes, that is true Andy.
I'm not in the market for one of these, my next hoss is going to be an older Guzzi, but I did see one of these in the flesh the other day in the showroom. It's surprising good looking and definitely holds it's own in fit and finish compared to the trumpet's that were sitting nearby. I agree, they need to do something about re-dressing those cables behind the frame. I think manufacturers should offer a cockpit customisation on order option. Give the folks that like a TFT that option, give us old luddites the old skool clocks, and if you must, add the tripper above them in the middle, though I would like the delete option. The fact that the tripper is offset to the clock, looks way too asymmetric for my OCD 😁 At 240kgs wet, it needs twin discs and/ or linked braking. The factory tyres are probably good enough for most situations, you really don't have the power to lay down and break them free here, short of actually hitting something slippery on the road, and then it's a crapshoot no matter what rubber you have. I think this has to be my favourite RE yet and I think they will sell really well 👍
Great review and detail. Go away leaf blower man 🤣. Up against Guzzi V7 - The Italian bike oozes class and maybe the Enfield could be in that classy bracket with just a bit more power. Love the sat nav design. It definitely catches your eye . Thanks for review.
Nice review. I'd call it a roadster - doesn't realky look anything like a cruiser. Because of the limited bhp I think the Meteor is the better option, you might as well just sit back, cruise, and enjoy the views. If you want a good roadster buy a 20-year-old Suzuki SV1000 (naked) for about £2,500. Fantastic bike, great engine, great handling.
“In a word, very nice.” Good review mate. Not a big fan of the colouring but looks like a good bike.
I'm definitely going to get a test ride on one of these. Think they look great! After all the enfields you've reviewed and STILL don't remember that the headlights only come on when the engine's running!!
Well my excuse is I ride a lot of manufacturers bikes and I can't remember who's does what (plus I'm an old codger!)
I quite like the look of the Shotgun, love that piano black engine cases and really enjoyed riding it when I had the chance…but still prefer the Continental GT.
I think that was a fair review....im really glad you didn't end it with ''I don't really know what this is and aimed at'', regardless of that they're flying off the shelves...
The day i test rode the shotgun in the northern Welsh Hills i absolutely loved it....but id ridden the 450 Himi...and even though I like traditional looking clocks i missed the Himi clock....
The shotgun is on my top bike want early next year....thank you for such a no nonsense review 👍
My pleasure as ever....
Nice bike; and I do like that gunmetal colour. I don't like the unbalanced gauges and the half numbers / letters in the paint job. Just don't get the point of that at all. Great review as usual; thanks.
Fair enough and thank you!
the heaviest clutch i have ever used was on a mid 1970's Norton Commando 850
A good looking bike, and a nice size the 650.
I still pine for the days of crime fenders.
....I know what you mean!
@@TheMissendenFlyerhaha, like that popular TV show Chromewatch. Sorry couldn't resist.
Something about it reminds me of an old Sunbeam S7. Nice review.
Balloon tyres & voluminous pastel green tinwork? Yeah, I can see that - very cool : )
Oh great, now I've gotta decide between the Classic 650 & Shotgun. Thanks a lot, RE. Just need a screen on either & a cover-up of the name, as a 'Murcan I don't want anything named after a weapon....
So choice made then!
I'm totally with you when it comes to ergonomics. The feet forward pegs are uncomfortable to me and I just can't get used to them. The up and rear-ward pegs of sports bikes are what I have always used but at my age and physical condition today, they've become difficult to endure. This is why I love that the industry and riders have chosen 'standard' or naked bikes as 'the' category of the day. The mid mount pegs and up(ish) right riding position is where I fit best now. This bike seems to fit the bill near perfectly.
Agreed.
Interesting review. It's a nice looking bike & good value too. I don't mind the classic cruiser looks at all but not a fan of the foot forward riding position so glad this doesn't have it personally. Best of both worlds to me. Brakes are an easy enough fix too with a braided line & new pads I imagine.
Yes I guess that would help - and I agree, feet forward is a no no for me too....
Great review. Bike looks good but I’m not too keen on the colour schemes available. Enjoyed the small print😂
Well paused….
This is nice. Sort of what I wish the Sportster had become.
Yes it does have a bit of that vibe about it (without the work of art engine of course)
Someone described acceloration noise as being like a dying bison! They are quite heavy, and just need a good amount of rider input. Rear brake is definitely very strong... intentionally so. Foot pegs can sometimes get in the way when you put your foot down, and other than that seems to be a good bike. Nice review too.
Thanks Jimmy...
Enjoyable review. Royal Enfield offer some good looking bikes at great vale for money.
Yes they do - thanks for the visit!
Almost bobberesque isn't it, I agree it's one of their better looking bikes, especially with the single seat 👍
I agree with your review including the brakes and weight factors. My GT seems to lack the feel I would like compared to my BMW R1250RS, but the pricing is 1/4 of it. The weight, even with my Classic, means a lot on a windy day and makes the ride enjoyable. Always wondered what Micky Mouse mirrors were called before "Micky Mouse". LOL.
Good question!
Only ridden the Interceptor and the Guerilla, both which were a lot of fun, look good and are great value for money.
But for me, the Shotgun 650 doesn't look quite right proportionally.
The fat rear mudguard gives the bike the look of a scooching dog, and is unbalanced from the front end.
Aesthetically, it's as if the front, middle and rear thirds of the bike are all taken from different bikes, which is a shame as I'm sure it's lovely to ride.
Great review Andy and always a pleasure to see a new TMF video has landed. 🙌
Thank you!
I am not a cruiser fan either. Feet forward is just not comfortable for me. I suppose that is why I gravitate towards Adventure style bikes. The rider position is just the most comfortable for me. I always appreciate your videos, Andy. Thanks for the review.
My pleasure - I appreciate you watching!
The headlight cowling / nacelle is actually metal.
Makes a nice change doesn't it!
So are both the mudguards and side panels....... that's very rare!
Andy 5832, Good ride even in the wet. Same for the review. That's a heavy machine. Over 500 lbs. Lot of steel there. Seems a very comfortable competent machine. Has good style and an affordable price if the dealer doesn't try to stick you up. No vibs is a real good attribute to me and my aged arthritic hands. Some over the seat bags, money in your pocket, all good. Andy do you think at some point in your travels you could visit some of the manufacturers in India? Do a rent and ride deal off season. All good from east Kentucky USA. 51132 Nomad Mountain Man Twist the Grip
I used to build bikeframes and to say this bike is great for customdevelpment i disagree not want to upset people i just think they could done a better job/ keep on smiling
Interesting review. Didn’t think I’d like anything about this bike but it sounds like you enjoyed it. Not a fan of the look but I think I’d enjoy the seating position and the power. I don’t really know what a “bobber” is but when I see this bike that’s the class I’d see it in. I just googled bobber yesterday and have to admit I’m more confused than ever about what it is!
I was able to demo one of these earlier this season. I was impressed at the value, at least. I'm confused as to why they would use an 18" front and 17" rear wheel, instead of using 17" front and rear. The steering was way heavier than it ought to have been and it was much less flickable than I'd have expected.
Its a comfy ride but might be a bit heavy for some...As with all bikes ..there is many a close to perfect human match
I've test rode this, it's awesome 😎👍🏽, magic carpet ride.. I'd love one and will do in the future.. what's stopped me, as a 5'2" female it's heavy.. I've currently got a white lime gravel drive (needs tarmacing).. also, not sure how I will turn it round in my garage, although there are some dolly's around.. also royal Enfield %finance is double Yamaha and KTM... The colour you're testing is the dearest, second hand £5,500 ISH with low mileage.. you forgot to say about the seat options, 3 style options and ability to modify it.. it's great.. if you're near Sheffield give Steve at Manhattan motorcycles a ring, tell him I sent you (for his coffee ☕)... All in all great bike.. I will own one sometime (I've just bought the KTM 790) 😮 thanks tmf great as always
Thanks for dropping by again Martine - always nice to hear from you!
240 kg!!? For a bare bones 650 - does it have lead ballast!? 🤔 Good review in poor conditions 👍
Thank you - in its defence, it doesn't feel that heavy.
Cos it's all metal! Plenty of light weight plastic bikes in the market, this just delivers on different ways.
My 2002 Kawasaki W650 weighs 195kg and it's all metal (even the handlebar switches) and it has a kickstarter! 😂
Looks like RE have invented the cruiser that isn’t a cruiser genre . These are the bikes the dealer alludes you too , when you ask them do you have any cruisers that are not really cruisers in stock . 😎👍
Those rear shock top mounts done with a hacksaw in someone's shed 😬
I like to think of this bike as a modern Bullet, if it was allowed to evolve with time rather than stick to its original classical form!
I am seriously thinking of getting one these, Neevesey raved about these when they 1st came out,,agree about the clocks though, should have fitted the Himalayan 450 clock IN THE CENTRE 😅
Yes that clock on the new Himalayan is the way to go....
Enfield are certainly coming out with some decent everyday ride bikes. I like the look of the bike but would miss my Givi topbox, handlebar fairing and GPS on my CB500F
Morning Andy, great review as usual.
I love the look of the Shotgun but the big downside for me is the weight. My Kawasaki Eliminator 500se (similar styling) has similar power and is only 174kg some 66kg lighter) which makes it a lot sportier and more nimble. Its also far easier to move around for me as I have to move the bike sideways on a dolly then pull it backwards out of my bike shed down a 1 foot wide ramp onto a gravel drive and then turn it round. At 62 with a duff knee and tennis elbow, 240kg it’s both hard work and too easy to drop.
It does sound like a lot but honestly my Interceptor feels heavier....I usually struggle with heavy bikes (as I'm a wealking with a dickie shoulder) but this one was OK....much better than the high weight figure would have you believe. Thanks for watching again....
Very nice looking Bobber-esq bike.
Have you tried the continental GT Andy ? oh yes it was 5 years ago - im a big fan
Nice Bike. I really prefer the retro look with some style.
It was a friends bike, compared to my early 1980's Honda at the time it was 4 or 5 times heavier to pull
What was??
@@TheMissendenFlyer it was a CB650
18:39 - See I prefer the looks of the Vulcan S personally, though it is ~£7.5k to get a colour worth having. The Rebel I blow very hot and cold over on looks, but it is worth saying the base model is £6399, a good saving over this, and for £6799 you can get the Special Edition which is a very handsome thing, with bronze wheels against black paint, a nice little cowl, and a brown diamond-stitch seat. If people are after a classic-looking cruiser there's not a huge amount of choice in this pricepoint, but in general I do think the Rebel is the biggest competition. If I was buying in this segment I believe I'd take the Rebel SE.
Fair enough!
Bike looks good. It needs a small windshield , front looks a little bare. Great paint scheme though.
I'm still waiting for RE to produce a 650 Himalayan or scrambler. Maybe they're waiting until they have a new liquid cooled twin cylinder engine? If they "doubled up" the 450 Himalayan engine & had a sensibly priced 900cc twin cylinder bike it could really shake up the adventure & touring market sector. But I don't hold out much hope as manufacturers never take my advice!
Good review Andy,, When I rode the Shotgun my main complaints about this bike are the weight and the colour options. The weight puts it in the same bracket as a large 900cc capacity andventure bike and the 120cc bonnevilles which have twice the power. I wonder if this is why the single disc setup is as you say not powerful enough due to the weight? Out of all the 650 twins this was the one I enjoyed the most.
Yes i agree the ride is brilliant - the best RE I've ridden.
I too initially didn't much like the look of this bike. Removing the rear seat makes it look so much better. After playing on the configurator I rather like the look of it in 'sheet metal grey' plus black LED indicators, bar end mirrors, 'Signature' seat, 'tinted urban flyscreen' and sump guard. Total price is £7373.
That cable poking out on the right side bothers me, nice bike besides.
If I’m honest,.. I think the 650 engine has had its day, it’s in so many of the the RE models. The new and up and coming 400s are making it a little obsolete in this day and age with everyone stepping down in cc. Euro 5 and what ever is to come is strangling the industry.
400 will always be weaker
I see what you mean about the looks and riding position against the super meteor. I think the shotgun looks more british classic and the meteor more american classic. I wonder what the 650 classic will be? Classic classic? lol!
Peace and love brother 👍 ✌️ ❤️
I've been seriously considering the Shotgun, in spite of it's name, then I saw the latest spy/teaser shots of the Classic 650. I think that might be an even better bike than the Shotgun.
Where have you seen those?
@@TheMissendenFlyer There's a few shots floating around on the internet especially one of some UK registered ones that seem to be production models undergoing testing in the UK. Just google R E Classic 650 and they'll come up.
Just to prove I was hanging on your every word did you say it was a 548 cc engine in the specs?
Slip of the tongue if I did! I suspect 648....
I found it more of a bobber than cruiser myself. It’s a bike I would like to own but haven’t gotten too yet. I do wish they’d improve their welding quality it’s really a sore spot for them. I see it’s English Summer again how do you keep your vehicles from rotting
It’s an ongoing battle….
I'm just not into the industrial look of these "budget" bikes, the vulcan S, the rebel, the bolt ,indian, and especially Harleys sportsters...however, I appreciate your videos and your objectivity!
Thank you (and I know what you mean!)
Love the paintwork but hate that long awkward looking exhaust
Am waiting for the Classic 650 next year. Thinking about buying it and put a sidecar on it!
My local dealer (in NZ) reckoned that we'd be seeing the scrambler version before the Classic.
I like the sound of both of those!
@@sd3457 classic 650 has been seen in testing and rumors that it will release in 2025. Regardless I’ll wait a year extra if needed but that’s the bike I want
TMF 'Word of the Day' - "Thrumble"
Yes I was quite pleased with that!
Great review and so helpful to real world riders as always! Can i ask what your thoughts are vs the 450 Himilayan. Appreicate its apples and oranges, but i'm 6ft 3 and though i love the look of the shotgun, I'm drawn to the Himilayan for the height and leg position, just not sure whether that single is going to be as nice to live with as the 650 twin. What's your thoughts, would you find the Himi engine tiresome after a while compared to this Shotgun?
Himi has that great clock but feels heavy to get off the stand - I prefer the Shotgun....
Looks a retro 50 bike to me nice bike but not for me though keep up the great vids Andy 👍
Thanks, will do!
I like the looks and the paint scheme. The weight is a bit off putting for me. At 240 kg it is the same as my old Honda cbf 1000. But overall it appears to be a good bike.
Yes it is a bit on the heavy side I agree....
was this monday or tuesday?, it was bloody sodden both days riding to work and back, thank god i've decent wet gear.
It was back in August IIRC!!
That offset speedo upsets my OCD. 😵
Profile looks good, but I don't like the off set speedo, it looks silly and should be central.
I agree - should have mentioned that!
I am 6'5" that seat seems to short. Is it possible to fit a longer seat from another 650 model?
I don’t know - I doubt it….
More bobber looking, like it except rear mudguard looks too heavy...no bias as I'm not related 😊
Tell me you own sone sort of Enfield?
@@TheMissendenFlyer nope..never had one, not had a bike since my youngest was born, R6 . I had a Fizzie, cbr125, dt175 (twin shock) a 250 super dream then switched to cars until the R6 then other things took over and just stuck to cars since..too old and knackered to go back to bikes..😞😊
Of all the twin cyl REs currently out there this is my least favourite. I still think the 650 Interceptor is the best all rounder for the cash in the line up.
It certainly is the best looking to me....but this defo has the edge on ride quality.
Not a fan of the shotgun or the blacked out schemes, give me chrome and bright paint, love the interceptor and super meteor 👍
Fair enough - something for everyone in the RE range!
I’d say more of a sports bobber than a sports cruiser…it would definitely look better if it was totally black.
Great Britain riders must get sick of the rain.
You're dead right there....it's raining here as I type....
I find all the paint schemes for this bike really tacky, which is a pity, as the Meteor 650's paint looked really classy
I quite like the schemes RE offers - at least they give lots of choice!
The all grey version is nice, but it deserved a proper badge, not a transfer.
Tell me about it, even the name. I'll just wait for the classic 650.
Agreed! Ugliest bike RE has ever made.
👍
I would call it a Bobber
Hey TMF! Could that almost be called a bobber? Dynamically I love this bike but visually I prefer the Super Meteor. Hmmm……decisions.
Roadster!
@@jimmyjam8795 Almost a roadster...? 😉
I find the shotgun is more of a Bobber rather than a cruiser!
Good video as always mate.
But I find this bike like most enfield models quite ugly, subjective I know but it's not a looker by any stretch.
I think that most buyers of enfields buy on price 1st and live with the looks...
The new BMW R12 looks like this and that is pig ugly aswell....
Keep up the good work mate....always good content...
Thank you...
I have to say Andy, it is a good looking bike and appreciate you braving the weather. However Black pipes and UK weather?... There'll be mud baked on them already, such that theyll never look new again. At least with chrome you can polish off the grime.
That is true....if they were that shiny enamel type finish they would defo work better in out climate.
For me it looks cheap and I'd prefer a nice speedo and rev counter like my 1974 Honda 250 had.
Any review about HD Hydra Glide Revival 114? Thank you for your reviews.
Nothing planned I'm afraid - sorry!
Id call it a bobber if the pillion seat isnt on the bike.
Lovely bike in most respects but my OCD can't cope with the asymmetrical and unattractive instrument cluster. After all it's normally what you spend the most time looking at as an owner so I simply don't understand why it's not something the good folks at RE care about. They know how to design good looking bikes and they did it right with the Interceptor so why have they dropped the ball on that ever since?
Good question!
I never watch the corporate launches. Your real world tests are far better. What on earth are RE making these out of? It's the same weight as an Africa Twin Adventure Sport!
Thank you - I appreciate that!
