  • Being a wildlife and nature photographer can be a real pleasure sometimes. Spending so much time out in the field you get to see the wonders of nature which can be found from the most rural locations to the middle of a city.
    In this video, I visit one of my local badgers sets which every year provide the most wonderful views of badger cubs as they venture from the protection of the set.

    Hello Simon. We don't have Badgers in Quebec so it was a thrill to see your video. Great videography and super photos. Thank you for sharing this one.

    I spent 40 years looking for badgers, last year, whilst in Scotland celebrating my 50th, I saw one by Loch Ness. I’ve recently moved and discovered a live sett minutes from my front door, in fact, I saw one last night whilst walking the dog. I’ll have to set up a hide to try to get some shots...........

      Hi, thanks for leaving a comment and very pleased you have found a sett close to your home. They are wonderful animals and hopefully you'll get some images soon. 👍

    Hi Simon I'm really enjoying your photos and videos I hope you and your family are staying safe at this covid time I know the lock down is a right pain at times but I'm trying to stay local to my home in Treherbert in south wales I live close to the mountains so going out and watching the buzzards and other birds is so relaxing thank you for all your videos and photo I can't get enough of watching them on my tv

      Hi Paul, thanks for your message and you've made my day that you like watching them. Covid has been a struggle hasn't it and has certainly affected my motivation hence I've not released a new video in a while. I lost a couple of friends to covid who were like me in their early 50's so it does hit home. I am getting back out again and have started recording new content for the channel so watch this space. Thanks again.

    Hi Simon, I came across your old badger photography video from 2019 and only realised it was a couple of years ago at the end. I'm currently working on a badger project and have captured activities mainly from the use of a trail camera. Due to the sett location it's down a bank and quite overgrown with trees which will effect the overall light when trying to capture video and stills. This video has given me a great tip on coaxing them to an area with better light possibilities rather than trying to achieve images at the main sett. Thank you for this and enjoy your current project.

    What a beautiful evening - as you say, great way to unwind and that comes across just from watching you in the field. Plus, BADGERS :-) I'm amazed that you were able to get so close - I guess that comes from knowing your subject's needs and behaviours well and having a sympathetic approach. The cub didn't seem at all bothered by you. Wonderful.

    Love the videos, would be really cool if you could do one focusing more on the business aspects of wildlife photography eventually. Always difficult to find videos of how people make the contacts/start off making money to then re-invest into their equipment. Either way, love your photos, brilliant stuff.

    When showing your settings you had silent high speed selected. I find that silent single shot is best when working badgers. I don't have a 1Dx though and have mainly used a 7D mk ii (very poor high ISO) and a 6D (excellent high ISO and good focusing in low light). I have, a permanent hide set up at one of the few photographically decent local setts. I should say, 'had a permanent hide' as a storm brought down a big tree directly onto it, completely flattening it. I am hoping to get the tree removed and a new hide built this winter ready for photography in the spring. Very enjoyable video, I've only just found your channel and will work my way through them. All the best.

    Nice video Simon - I'm a bit jealous of you with those badgers coming out in practically full daylight! The setts I know they are far too shy and only come out well after dark. Great shots & video.

      If you go every day and just put out a few peanuts you will find that they will be waiting for you. I know of a couple of setts that I generally start putting a few nuts down in April and make it a bit earlier every evening then by the time May comes and the cubs are about they should be coming out early evening. At one stage I could go to the sett put out a few nuts and they would be out before I had my camera set up. I have photographed them in the mid afternoon before now and they eventually get used to you and are not worried by my presence.

      Hi Rich, thanks for subscribing and your comments, it's really appreciated. Although I've been a professional wildlife photographer for a while now, I'm by no means an expert on UA-cam videos. I'm still getting to grips with it myself. The best answer I can say is to make your videos an engaging story. If you look at Morten videos he grabs your attention purely with his personality, enthusiasm and story. Might be worth trying that. I do try and plan mine but i don't think I've found the magic touch yet. Good luck with it.

    How lovely. I have found a badger set but they only seem to come out after dark. I know you said evening but can I ask roughly what time it was when your badger showed please? I think I need to get some peanuts!

    • @SimonWantling
      @SimonWantling  5 років тому

      Hi Brian, thank you. Yes this badger appears between 8.30 and 9pm. If you find a set and sprinkle a few peanuts around then I'm sure you will see them. Set honey is also very good used with the peanuts. They just love them.

Thanks again...

      @TheAndyMaan 4 роки тому +1

      @@SimonWantling Thanks for the reply Simon. You can get quite close then, that's cool, do you find that you are able to get that close because you have been there a lot and they are somewhat used to your presence? I'll have to look into getting a throw over hide like you used in this video.
      Only just found your channel from this video but look forward to watching a lot more of your videos. All the best

    • @SimonWantling
      @SimonWantling  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Andy. Actually Badgers have very poor eyesight. It's more important to stay down wind of them so your scent is disguised. If you get a throw over hide then it'll prove really useful.

    Hi Simon, loving your videos! Can I ask - where did you get the camo covers for you 600? I just purchased a used Canon 500 which came with covers but unfortunately one piece was missing. The pattern is identical to yours so If you could let me know where you got yours I maybe able to get the missing piece from them. The lens is mint so I want to use the covers to keep it that way! Cheers.....Mart

      Thanks a lot. Sure, they are by Lenscoat and I got mine from Wex Photographic in the UK. You'll probably have to buy the full set though as I don't think they sell individual sections.

      Wow mate, that was a rapid response! Thanks. Could I just be a pest and ask you if you can remember what the name of the pattern was? I'm thinking 'Harvest'? If I can I'll try and contact Lenscoat and ask the question but as you said I won't hold my breath!
