Technically, the transmission is a CVT, but it's a much different design than most. More reliable and more efficient. It's an eCVT. There are no belts or clutches, which are the weak points of conventional CVTs. It's a planetary gear set between two motor generators and the engine. The electric motors vary the speed coming out of the transmission. You can find details online.

Awesome review! I agree with you 100%, Toyota/Lexus never saw an ICE-less future and purposely dragged their feet on EV’s, hence the phoned-in RZ450e. In today’s climate with EV’s falling quickly in popularity, seems as if their gamble was right on. Thanks for posting!

Hybrids are actually growing in popularity not declining. Fully electric is still up for debate. I think it's more of a play on it's maturity and Toyota is a bit slower in general to row things out. They're the more tried, true, and reliable company and not the most technically advanced one. You can see it in their interior with the electronics, informatainment system, etc. They aren't going for high tech at all their. Just steady and reliable. If you want the more fun playful stuff you go Mazda, Telsa, etc., but you're a different consumer at that point.
Toyota knows what its consumers tend to want. They're going broad range. SUV's are primarily family vehicles. Families error on the practical, efficient, and safe side rather feature rich not to mention most people can't truly afford the high end tech stuff anyhow. So it's just smarter in general for a slow roll out than a full on blast into full EV.

@@tsdr6830 - many thanks. As it happens we took a different route when confronted with the supply issue and instead of replacing our Toyota Venza with the RAV Prime as we had hoped, we got rid of our Mazda 3 and replaced it with a MiniCooper SE electric. This one we use mostly for in-town commutes and errands due to its quite short range. The old Venza we keep in semi-retirement saving her for the long out of town trips when we generally carry a lot of crap or tow trailers. This strategy is working quite well as we’re saving about $5K a year on fuel city driving. I’d never buy an ICE Mini due to their rather terrible reputation on the gas motors but with all electric propulsion and a floorpan full of battery packs it’s a zippy, nimble go kart perfect for the battle of city driving. Might keep an eye on the used RAV Prime market and retire the Venza for good in 2025/26.

Thanks! 1. You need to be in HV Sport mode to get 0-60 in the rated 5.7 seconds. 2. Toyota's eCVT is far superior to most regular CVTs, it's a feat of engineering. I have the XSE Premium and love everything about it.

Thanks Brian. So many questions. It didn't appear that the ICE kicked in during your test. How was that in terms of NHV? Also, once the ICE kicks in, does it work as far as battery charging and electrical assist? Does the ICE put a net positive gain into the battery? (In other words, if you drive on the ICE long enough, does the battery build up enough to re-establish your 42 mile EV only range, or does it just revert to operating like a regular hybrid?) My other questions are in regard to gasoline utilization and engine warm up. I think I've read that some PEHV's are programmed to kick on the ICE so that your gasoline doesn't get old. (Because in theory, if you have a commute of 20 miles or less one way, you may go long periods of time when the ICE doesn't "need" to fire up. My other question is on warm-up. Suppose I have a 50 mile commute. Normally, with my ICE, I go easy on RPM as I make my way out of the subdivision, giving the engine a chance to warm up a little before I hop on a 45 mph arterial. Not a lot of traffic here, so I can gently accelerate up to 45, keeping RPM low. Now, put me in the Prime. I sneak out of my subdivision, get up to 45, and onto the 60 mph highway, all on electric. Then, when my battery is depleted enough, the car kicks on the ICE. Except instead of slowly driving out of the subdivision, I'm doing 65 mph. Seems like an abrupt way to "wake up" the ICE. Does the Prime allow you to select which mode so you can gently put a little heat into the ICE when you know you'll out run the pure EV range? Yeah, pricing on these is a lot more than the hybrid. Kind of tricky to figure out a ROI over the lifetime of ownership because most of us can't predict our trips that far ahead. Kind of eye popping that Toyota upholstery looks sketchy already. We're early stage shopping for a replacement for our Forester XT, so the acceleration of the Prime is enticing. We drove an XSE Hybrid, and compared to competitors (CX-5, 50, upper trim Forester, Outback), the interior was much more "utilitarian" bordering on "rental car". I will be curious too, to see how the electronic driven rear wheels works in slick/deep snow. Keep up the great work! Hope Spring is just around the corner up there in Canada.

Thanks, appreciate it. Yes, I'd love to get more in depth and timing definitely didn't allow me to try it in the snow, despite a planned snowboard trip! Spring in my part of Canada is coming...but I've spent a bit of time in Florida this winter with our racing team. Can't complain!

My Prime does not charge the battery all the way back up when in HV mode, it behaves like a regular HV at that point. There is a charge mode however that you can set the car to, and it charges the battery to 80% only. As for the cold starts, the prime starts the motor in a low rpm mode before it engages full HV mode, it runs slowly until the engine is warm which is indicated on the dash display.

Yes, some EVs accelerate quickly. That's great. Woo. Hoo. There are plenty of drag racing channels on UA-cam and this isn't one of them. On this channel we enjoy driving and everything that goes along with it. There are even some EVs that are quite good at turning and braking, but not that many of them just yet.
Most of them are one trick ponies. Mash the gas. Go quick in a straight line. Any monkey can do that. Here, we'd rather experience the joy that a century of mastering mechanical engineering has brought us.
Thankfully, it seems EV ownership has made it easy to identify those disinterested in the act of driving. For those proficient drivers among us, certain EV drivers strike fear in our hearts, similar to what your passengers experience every time you carelessly mash the throttle in whatever EV it is you drive.
