This is the best overlooked Christmas movie I've seen. Loved this for years. Funny, beautifully written, deeply moving, this should be seen everywhere!
I'm a sentimental Italian-American and this movie totally delivers great emotion and sentiment for me. I've watched it so many times and love it again and again - even makes me a bit dewy eyed each time. So many tender moments of charm and simplicity, love and loss. This is a gem and a relatively undiscovered treasure so worth watching for the tender-hearted. I'm not a big Fred MacMurray fan though I do like him in this pic, but I love Barbara Stanwyck - she never disappoints. she plays the a-z range of emotions believably and with a certain "je ne sais quoi" with every role she takes on and this is no exception. She morphs from a wise, street-cracking, shallow dame to a lovely, sensitive caring, honest-hearted, loving woman worthy of new respect and love. The fact that she's always attractive, looks great in roles and clothes and takes care of herself is always a bonus, too - she's great on the eyes. Great looking gal and a great role model for her gender. Love Beulah Bondi and Elizabeth Patterson, as well. Perfect lovable acting, also. I do wish Sterling Holloway didn't always play such an airhead in his roles. Although to his credit, in this one, he has a nice voice and his singing "The End of a Perfect Day" finally shows some humanism, meaning and depth of feeling and character, although briefly only for the length of the song. Glad the writers and directors gave him a hint of that. And Barbara empathizes with him throughout the movie, which adds to her changing heart. It's also a great song full of feeling and emotion and reflection, as is clearly seen and felt when watching Barbara's heart and brain react to the words. Although she knows the song, it's as if she's hearing them for the first time... and how she looks at the loving family she's visiting while they sing contentedly along in family peace and love. Her face subtly, but effectively shows her remorse and longing for the kind of life she is witnessing. Tearful for any viewer! Same with the earlier song "My Indiana Home" - beautiful sequence of reminiscing, reflecting, longing and missing... tugs, doesn't it??? Love it! Gotta go now and watch it again since just last night! You should, too! Also, first time I'm seeing this review series - great idea. Love the oldies form the Golden Age of Hollywood. Think I'll subscribe. Thanks for this, Jim
First saw this one on TCM and it’s delightful! Now I feel like turning my dvd on. You should do Lady on a Train next. That Deanna Durbin Christmas movie is a crazy mix of thriller/comedy/drama/musical but still works.
Personal discoveries of mine include - "The Cheaters" (my new favorite Christmas movie), "Beyond Tomorrow," "Remember the Night," "Holiday Affair" with Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum, "It Happened on 5th Avenue," and for a modern cheesy one, "Borrowed Hearts."
Yeah, anything with Stanwyck or MacMurray is usually good - put the two of them in one movie, though, and you're onto something special. Not as special as MacMurray and Carole Lombard, of course, but close.
When I think Stanwyck, I think of Night Nurse, Baby Face, and of course Christmas in Connecticut which was later remade into a horrible made for tv movie.
If you can make it through the over-long unfunny 'Prosecutor' scene early in the movie - and forgive the of-its-time stereotyping of African-Americans in MacMurray's manservant (played by Fred 'Snowflake' Toones - humiliatingly credited only as 'Snowflake' in the credits) - it's a great film.
I like the idea of you reviewing classics from the past, Xmas-themed or not. Hope you continue to do so.

Ben's mic is about 8 levels quieter than Alonso's, its killing me!!!
This is such a great series. I haven’t heard of a lot of the movies you’re reviewing.

I saw this on tv long ago and far away and could not find it on Disc.
Loving this Christmas countdown with Ben and Alonso!
Never even heard of this one. I'll have to look for it this season.

Sweet film. Somehow missed this one over the years.
Very good movie. Charming
I still the VHS tape from the 90s and love it. However, I wish the ending was different, even if it was realistic.

this is a good movie
I wonder what we're doing that they're gonna cringe about 50, 100 years from now.

Love. Love. Love. This movie!
