1:15 “....run you a tape measure” and picks up a level. I nearly fell over laughing. Great build though!! From one Texan to another excellent work. The Aggie smoker is my personal favorite.
Eric Mathis I caught it after and didn’t want to go back and correct. If you see me looking off camera, my neighbor is distracting me as he walk by, jumping around , making faces. It was quite hilarious. II knew it was only a matter of time,
I just built a UDS with this kit, now $99 bucks. I have to say I am a little disappointed that I didn't order an upgraded kit. The temp holds well at about 260 at 7 on the intake and halfway on the pinwheel exhaust, but I can't get mine over 300 wide open on both ends. I ordered a heat deflector but I don't see any need for it If my temp stays where it is.
Here’s what you need to do. I’m putting the same intake on my three new competition Smokers. I put my brisket on at 450 to 550°.. When you first start your fire, the lid is wide open and the intakes are wide open. Watch the temperature gauge. When it reads 25 degrees below your target temp.. that’s when you shut the lid .. the temp will rise about 50 degrees more and the cold meat will settle her in to your desired temp .. so.. if you’re trying to cook at 400°. Once your thermometer gets to 375°, shut the lid. It should rise to about 425°. Once you put the cold meat on it will bring it down.
Love all the drum builds you have there. I really like the way you show how to keep it simple and offer the low priced kit. I was about to do this couple years ago before I got a WSM. Now I'm getting interested in this project again when I watch this video. Nice work and thanks for the video. Do you have a good source for a 55 gal drum.

These UDS smokers are top notch, what kind of paint do you use? I have tried using the high heat barbecue paint, but every little scratch remove the paint and does not look good.
jasonsaved the will scratch easy . But you can put on high temp clear coat. . They sell it with the paint at auto zone . Best to go flat black. Easy to touch up
What kind of paint do you use on yours and how do you get the paint so even and smooth? I have seen people use spray cans and it looks streaky and not as uniform and smooth...
sardomnumspa Howdy, I used VHT Anodized Orange.. it’s a transparent paint .. so it takes several coats to get a good color.. The trick is not to do long left and right strokes.. if you go through my other videos I’ve posted you will notice a few that have the streaks you were talking about. So I miss when I tried something different. Instead of long strokes I more or less acted like I had a big eraser in my hand and was trying to erase something on the drum. That is the type of strokes that I was doing. Just snapping your wrist back-and-forth real quick going up and down. The anodized paint is a heavy paint, so it is easy to run. Make sure you were constantly moving and not staying in one place. You will do about five coats or more real light. It gets darker with each coat. It will go from orange to reddish maroon after so many coats Join my Facebook group, Ugly Drum Smokers Texas
Yes sir just wondering if I can get a link or info for the person who makes the team plates? I dont have Facebook though. Let me know and thanks for the great videos
marcus I build a basic drum starting at around $400 it’s pretty much a Mr. potato head after that, just how nice do you want to look. If you order a kit from UdsParts.Com you can finish one out yourself for under $250
Raul Rodriguez Quarter-inch for accessories and quarter-inch for accessories and grate bolts.. One and a half inch for the intakes and 2 inch for the exhaust
Raul Rodriguez I don’t know why they send those screws.. I don’t use them when I order.. I use stainless steel 1/4 x 5/8 for accessories ....1/4 X 1-1/2 for grate bolts .. It’s the only thing I don’t like about the kit is the mounting hardware..

sardomnumspa Through my experience, you don’t need high temp paint. You only need the high temp primer. After that you can use regular Walmart or Home Depot rustoleum paint at $3 a can
Ricky Guzman okay, that’s a liner.. but its the easy liner... Buy your parts first. That way you can mock your drum up first. By doing that, the holes will help you to burn the drum out.. So, drill your holes, then burn a pallet or two in the drum to burn it out. After your done, any liner left should come out easy with Comet and steel wool, or just use a palm sander or wire wheel on your drill
donald ferdinand hi Donald.. actually the charcoal basket I use and comes with this kit, will run 26-30 hours at 225-250 while holding a large 15.8 lb bag of briquettes and wood for smoke. . So she truly runs steady the entire cook. Check on my channel for another video call “The Dark Horse” it’s where I installed a door. The door gives you three options in my opinion. 1: The basket burns so long, that you may want to change up your smoke profile on other meats and add a different flavor of wood. That would be a good reason to have a door. But just to have access to the fire basket itself, especially if there is a grease fire from poor maintenance.. 2: it allows you to add a lower grate and have access to cook meats on the lower shelf and have access .. 3. The door allows easy access to clean out the bottom of the drum. Now all that being said, 90% of the people who cook on a drum will tell you that a door is not needed. If your charcoal basket is loaded properly it will run 30 hours and you will never have to touch it. But like I said there are other advantages. So again check out my video and see what you think. Thanks for commenting and feel free to ask questions if you build your own.
