Unbelievably I went to the same high school as Ron DeSantis but in much different times. That was Dunedin high School and I graduated back in 81 and in those times they taught real history. Did they teach enough about African American history? No but we could read any damn book we wanted to and not have an authoritarian fascist deplorable tell us what we can read or learn... I never felt an ounce of shame when learning about history in school...the history has nothing to do with me, I was just learning about the past and what happened.

I think it was just plain history taught back when I went to school 1967-1980. Just what I learned then about Slavery and the Holocaust opened my eyes to the hate and unfairness of the human race. I always felt we have to do away with those kinds of beliefs.

As an old white lady, I don't understand how learning the truth is somehow bad. We only learn by our mistakes and what we did right. Period. The best part about history is that we learn from mistakes made in the past. But it always keeps repeating itself.
My brother's 2nd grade curriculum covers slavery. While I'm 100% OK with that, I'm not convinced that's the best age to teach that topic because, to me, that's a hard topic to fully grasp at the age of 7-8 years old, but it sticks to the standard American history myth, so he's learning the false narrative that slavery ended in the United States after the Civil War.
I have kids about that age… both incredibly smart and I have no problems with teaching them that, so that they can fully grasp the effects of slavery and how it impacts our political climate and institutions like the justice system when they’re a bit older.
