    The biggest problem with Samurai was that it was a cut and paste job from it's Japanese version Shinkenger. Saban was trying to get a series out fast because the show had practically been off the air for a year, so they basically took the plot from Shinkenger and only changed the bear minimal they could. Some of the changes worked like the intertwining of Deker and Dayu worked pretty well, others like making Antonio a fisherman instead of a sushi chef wasn't that major, but their biggest mistake was the alterations to the Jaden and Laura relationship. In Samurai, they are brother and sister. In Shinkenger there was no relationship, the red ranger was a shadow lord set up to be a target for their enemies while the true air, who hadn't been born yet so no one knew she was a girl, was hidden away to try and learn the sealing symbol. When she is revealed it leads to conflict in the group as the rangers are torn between their duties as samurai and wanting to help the man they had called their lord but at the same time feeling betrayed because they put their life on the line protecting someone who they thought was special but was really of the same social class they were. It also strengthens the whole red ranger always wanting to go alone attitude he had because he didn't want them putting their lives on the line to protect someone who was no better than them. Sorry for rambling there, I appreciate that you like Samurai and my only reason for sharing is I want you to understand why they did it this way and what went wrong. I would encourage you to find a fan sub of Shinkenger like I did and compare and contrast the shows for yourself and maybe you can understand why I feel people need to know about this.

      +sonofadentist You can't blame Saban on Samurai's carbon copy status. Blame Tzachor. According to Bates' denofgeek interview, Tzachor thought Shinkenger's story was good enough and didn't need to change.

      Thank you! Someone who sees my point. If they wouldn't have completly copied and pasted Shinkenger, and did the shit right instead of Saban being extreamly cheap, I feel like we would of had a good comeback to the Power Rangers series.. That and the fact that they yell their names like idiots at the beginning of the theme song just..... What were they thinking?! lol I feel bad for the actors.. I don't see this as their fault, I see it as more the writing. Having sat through Shinkenger (Rewatching cause I forgot about most of it) I don't believe when Takarus sister came in, they behaved like that to his sister. If I am correct, they were loyal and she was a bit of a hard ass. (Again, It's been a while since i've seen it)

    • @danielramsey6141
      @danielramsey6141 6 років тому +7

      There was also another element that was apart of that conflicting storyline, in Shinkenger, the Real Heir to the Shiba family had her own Retainer! And he was the main cause of Social dispute as he purposely kicked the Gold Ranger from the Team by pulling Class and Traditional upbringing, while also berating most of the other Rangers all the while as the very shy and reserved "Heir" (I forgot her name okay) was is conflicted in her own position. It isn't until after she's injured that she decides to cast Traditional Code aside and stand for her new friends and "Shadow Lord", bringing him back into the fold as part of her family and Finally telling her Retainer to back off as she uses up her power to aid the team for the Last time.
      Its so sad that Laura's character never had this Interpersonal conflict, nor could I agree with any of the choices made for this season. Its so carelessly adapted that it directly effects the next Season in such a crappy manner!

      And yet, Shinkenger is one of the greatest Sentai series ever. They point-for-point adapted Shinkenger, but made everything worse with terrible directing, bland writing, and straight-up ignoring what made Shinkenger so great: High stakes, strong, well-developed characters, and plot twists that actually made sense in context. The Lauren thing was dumb in Samurai because A: Jayden was a terrible leader to begin with, and B: Turning Lauren into the older sister keeps Jayden still a Shiba by blood, paralleling him more with Emily than Takeru was with Kotoha. The arc with Takeru and Kaoru was built on the idea that Takeru was *not* a Shiba by blood, merely a stand-in raised to *think* he was the head of the clan, when he really wasn't part of the clan at all. His whole identity revolved around being a leader and a samurai lord, and so when he found out he wasn't, it actually carries weight. Here, it's bullshit.

    • @jamesbevan9939

      Adaptations don't have to be note-for-note copies. Samurai tried to stick as close to Shinkenger as possible while doing little new and it suffered for it. In Space and RPM veered sharply away from the source material of Megaranger and Go-Onger and are remembered as some of the best seasons. It's okay to take risks.

    The problem I have with Power Rangers Samurai is that it basically is a note for note telling of the Sentai but it takes away little parts of Shinkeneger or flat out change them. For instance, Mako's (Mia's counterpart) sisterly bond with Chiaki (Mike's counterpart) and how she was always the first to call it Takeru on his bullshit. Or in the changed category, Ryonouske's (Kevin's counterpart's) worship of Takeru was played for laughs. Or the big one. Takeru and Kaoru (Lauren's counterpart) were not related! Takeru's family served the Shiba clan by being their stand ins and Takeru felt guilty because the other Shinkengers were risking their lives to protect him when he was little more than a sacrificial lamb meant to keep the Gedoushu off Kaoru's trail.

Takeru is no more than other Shinkengers (maybe even less) and he suppose to lead them to battlefield where death awaits. This is very heavy stuff.

    Whenever I hear complains about Samurai all I can think of is "but this made sense in Shinkenger!". I know this is usually a childish complaint, but I'm serious; about 90% of the problems of Power Rangers Samurai come down to the writers copying the superficial elements of Samurai but not the essence. The whole Red Ranger worship made sense because he was a literal Feudal Lord and the Rangers were his vassals; Ryunosuke groveled because Takeru was his lord and that was his place (and everyone else thought it was kind of pathetic); Genta whole issue is that he's a commoner and as such he really doesn't belong among the high class of Samurai. Also, Chiaki and Mako did resent their roles as Shinkengers even if Mako never expressed it; and the show did explore the issue of Kotoha as a replacement and had the subtext that she's a lot younger than everyone else. Finally Takeru's deal was that he was a Kagemusha, a fake; he wasn't just the real Red Ranger he wasn't a Lord at all, he was a random commoner kid they picked up to serve as a meat-shield to hide the real Lord Kaoru Shiba. Again, that's a big deal when you're dealing with actual literal Feudal Lords, not to mention that Takeru's whole life was a lie. And yes, the sexist subtext is still there, but it's less obnoxious when you say that the Male Red Ranger is a literal impostor and the Female one keeps returning for crossovers.
    With Samurai copying things like Kevin worshiping Jayden, but not Jayden being Kevin's lord, or copying the characters behaviors, but not their motivation, or copying Jayden being a replacement but not a fake; you get a very flat kinda weird show without any of the interest the original had

    Honestly, the way they treated Lauren was what did the show in for me. Even if she was there for only a short time, her story has a lot of tragedy behind it. If anyone had to feel regret about their samurai heritage, it was her. Everyone else had relatively normal lives before getting the call, but Lauren was kept in isolation, even from her own brother. And one of the first things her brother does is leave in the middle of her welcome party. Everyone is dismissive of her because she literally just appeared like an episode ago, but they make no effort to interact with her after Jayden leaves. Kimberly Cross (Lauren's actor) was acting her ass off, especially in her scene with Jayden before he left, and she's just swept aside for the almighty Jayden.

    Samurai could have been really interesting if the whole "Jaden isn't the real Red Ranger" plot was the focus of Samurai and Lauren takes over as Red Ranger for Super Samurai. It'd explain Jaden's hesitancy to actually connect with his team, giving him something in the way of development and be really tragic when the thing he wanted to avoid, growing too close with the team despite knowing Lauren would one day come to take it from them, actually happens. It'd also keep the fans on their toes because something was up with Jaden the entire time and we'd have a mystery to solve.
    Then, in the finale of Samurai, Jaden gets severely injured during his fight against Deker and we're left on that cliffhanger. Then Super Samurai comes around and we meet Lauren, who has had to come back from her training early because Jaden is too injured to continue fighting as the Red Ranger. That way, Lauren failing with her plot is because she rushed back to help Jaden and not because "lol gurls suck haha". You could even have a nice bit of mirroring with Lauren being injured near the finale and Jaden stepping back in, either having just recovered from his injuries or come back after leaving at the start of Super Samurai. It would also add to the theme of choice because Lauren would have chosen to reveal herself before she was ready and Jaden would have chosen to take on the mantle of Red Ranger proper after Lauren's injury.
    Add in a few more choice-related things to help develop the characters and the series becomes a lot better. Emily chose to take her sister's place as Yellow Ranger and Antonio chose to become the Gold Ranger, so maybe have Kevin be forced to choose between his swimming and being the Blue Ranger or something similar. You could have Mia get given an opportunity of a lifetime and have to choose whether to take it and pass the Pink Ranger powers onto her brother or leave it and remain Pink Ranger. If you go with the whole Jaden leaves at the start of Super Samurai thing I suggested, you could emphasize that its Jaden's choice to leave and in return make it emphasized that he chose to return at the end.

    On that note: in Japanese, Kaoru (Lauren's counterpart) was..kind of an Ice Queen and did not get along well. So in Shinkenger, the context makes sense why the team didn't like her. In Lauren's case, it was unfounded completely and was another example of copy-paste. She was nothing but kind and warm and welcoming to her new teammates but because "plot" she was treated like an outsider.

    This season was actually my first power rangers, and actually what got me into the franchise as a kid. I’ll admit, it’s not my favorite (RPM takes that spot) but it’s still among my top 5 due to the nostalgia alone. I do see a lot of the same flaws that are brought out in this video, but I still enjoy it, and I hope that others give it a shot. My favorite episode is Day Off, the one where they encounter the Nighlok with the shotgun who is immune to swords, because it prevents a real problem that without the Beetle Disk, they literally had no way to fully destroy him, as the quintuple slash barely hurt him. It created a real situation of feeling powerless that you don’t see often in the earlier sections of power rangers, because with their weapons, they literally couldn’t hurt him

    "One makes the show they want, the other makes the show they can."
    That's how Amit Bhaumik (writer of Forever Red) described the duality between Super Sentai and Power Rangers. In regards to "Samurai", its biggest sin wasn't that it was a just lazy copy-paste of its Japanese counterpart, nor that the writing or acting was atrocious. Not even the fact that it thoroughly mediocre the whole way through, because we've had past seasons like that, too. No, it's biggest sin was that it was the follow up to RPM, aka the single most innovative and original season since MMPR. If you're hip to the bumpy behind the scenes alt history of PR, then you know that PR is truly just a cheaply made hack job of Sentai; but RPM gave us the blueprint for how PR could be it's own thing, while still paying homage to it's Japanese cousin. RPM used Sentai footage sparringly, carved out a unique premise, fleshed out its characters, and, thank God for this one, it had actual *actors*! Samurai was a screeching regression back the embarrassingly infantile troupes that PR has become infamous for, and every season since has only doubled down. I have my opinions that this is part of the reason why the 2017 movie flopped and couldn't ingreciate itself with the zeitgeist. Sad, really.

    • @neroraul3550
      @neroraul3550 5 років тому +8

      The problem is that Suoer Sentai generally has the budget to go nuts, since it does well in Japan, and is the original show. Power rangers doesn’t have the budget, and is generally pitched to the networks as a cheap show to make because of the stock footage. Since the networks care about the bottom line, they don’t like when the show doesn’t use the footage.

We sacrifice everything as a person is only as good as his job. I was actually quite disappointed how they were not able to translate this to the American audience.

  • @Miltendo
    @Miltendo 7 років тому +31

    What you're proposing is entirely depending on if Saban would agree to film new scenes EXCLUSIVELY for Power Rangers Samurai. I mean, honestly, I get your drift with your arguments. However, you could have gone in-depth more IF you acknowledge the original source material, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Your points would have better ground with you could have potentially analyzed from the original Japanese series that could have potential elements implemented into Power Rangers Samurai. That's just my take.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 років тому +18

      Yeah, but as a standard, I don't like basing arguments around the Sentai because I feel like even adaptations should be able to stand on their own two feet without constant reference to it's source material. I get where you're coming from, but I'm focusing more on the concepts and less on exactly how practical things like filming unique scenes would be because that's not my area of knowledge honestly. But even still, from what I understand, Shinkenger would be hard to adapt no matter what because it's so rooted in Japanese culture. And unless Saban wanted to hire an all Japanese cast as Rangers, things would always seem a little wonky.

      I get your point and usually I agree Power Rangers should stand on it's own. But at the same time, calling them out for having a male Red Ranger then a female one briefly instead of the the reverse is not fair criticism considering they couldn't do it that way even if they wanted to. Yeah, they didn't have to go note for note retelling of the story arc as Sentai, when the cultural differences are why it came off like that, and could have told a different story. But they can't have possibly had the red ranger be a girl the entire time because they had to work around the footage. So you are saying basically, it could have been better if they had gone a direction that was completely out of their control to do. I have zero doubt Power Rangers would have had a female red ranger a long time ago but they can't do that unless the Sentai does it first. So it isn't really fair to put it on them.

  • @Kuchiri
    @Kuchiri 7 років тому +11

    There's a lot of issues. At one point of time I planned on doing a Shinkenger/Samurai combi-retrospective. The major issues is of course, the series is heavy ingrained with Japanese Themes and motives. Clearly with how you explained this series, you haven't looked up the source material. Which honestly this is real issue with this season. They not only decided to try to be exactly like Shinkenger, but a Y-7 Shinkenger instead of the dark series it really was.
    Shinkenger message is about Family. Everything throughout the series focuses on family. Red has his secrets and pains that he tries to hide from the group and becomes the 'big brother' of the group. Everyone admires him until his secret is revealed. Pink used to be a daycare teacher, and she uses that knowledge to be the 'mother' of the rangers her paralyzed mother even showed up for an episode. Blue has daddy issues a lot of his focused episode revolves round his father and his friend. Green and Yellow start the relationship and build it. Yellow's sister being sick is the same. Gold also has a similar story but he ends up being an adoptive brother of the group.
    The twist in Shinkenger is that Takeru Shiba isn't a Shiba... at all. He doesn't even have a natural gift of the Fire Symbol Power. Half the reason why he doesn't try to have social skills with the rest of the group is because he knows he shouldn't be there and he will have to leave the team for the true head of the Shiba clan. (Red's family is Royalty, the other four family's were their hereditary knights that serve under Red.) So he learned how to control some Fire Power. His whole arc for 43 episodes literally is him trying to keep everyone away so he doesn't get attached and he eventually becomes family with them. The rest of the team is anti-Lady Shinkenred because she isn't their leader they fought under. She just came out of nowhere and no one has their trust in her. Some of them are more accepting of it... since it's their hereditary rights as retainers. After a few episodes she realizes that she should've been with the team the entire time and there is only one person that can fix the team. So she adopts Takeru right before the final battle. On top of that. ShinkenBlue gets the finishing blow on Doukoku (Xandred).
    Here's what would've fixed Samurai.
    - 1/2 of the team be Japanese Americans. You have this story set in Japan. At least have the cast be native-ish. Bring up stories how other families got involved. Granted, this goes against Saban wanting his series to be completely diverse but you can't ignore the setting to do so.
    - If you were going to make the Red Ranger white, then don't make him a Shiba. Make it the mystery. How can he be the 'emperor' of the rest of the retainers if he isn't Japanese. Bring up the discussion of race and make it healthy. The show already wants to be diverse.
    - Do the twist like Shinkenger, have a Japanese-American actress be the female red. Have her adopt the red ranger. This does multiple things.
    1) It shows kids watching the show it's okay to have parent's not be the same as you. You can be African-american and have white parents. You can be white and have Asian parents.
    2) It gives kids that know they've been adopted a hero. They will be like. 'OH!! I'm like the Red Ranger!! He was adopted too!!'
    - Try not to be a watered down Shinkenger. That's the biggest problem there. They threw the scripts into Google Translate and deleted every word with 'Death' 'Torment' 'Hell'
    - Dayu was a mistress of a wealthy man who promised her everything. He was cheating on his girlfriend with her. However, he was lying to Dayu the entire time. So she burned down the church that the wedding was being held in. With the man, his fiance, their families, and Dayu. She played the Shamisen which Doukoku heard from deep within his prison. He loved her music so he spared her soul and turned her into a Gedoshuu. He also took the man she loved and trapped his soul into her Shamisen.
    -Juzo Fuwa (Deker, his name also means 1000 disembowelment) wanted power. So he killed his entire village and their souls got trapped into his sword.
    If you wanted to copy and paste you can't get rid of all the stories if their subject matter doesn't agree with parents. Either go 100% original or do it all.

    Here is the near complete story on why it simply sucked so much. First off, Tzachor helmed the project and pretty much translated the script word-for-word from Super Sentai. Japan has very different values from the West, so expect a lot of chaos when translating for a non-Japanese audience. It's not even a good translation. A lot of things were butchered. Second, production schedule was rushed with filming and scripting being done in a little less than a year after Saban had finished buying PR back from Disney.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 7 років тому +8

      What I don't get is why one would just plain translate Sentai.
      Earth to Tzachor, *ITS AN AMERICAN SHOW.* Yes, the fighting takes footage from a Japanese show, but the point is adapting. Power Rangers isn't an anime dub, it's completely different stories in places with completely different values.
      If we're gonna reference or nod to Sentai, it's gotta be subtle...which Samurai beats you over the head with the obvious Sentai not working here.

Seeing these teenagers desperately trying to EMOTE while reading off the ridiculous dialogue was painful to see. The Asian girl was particularly bad, and I honestly thought she was going to hurt herself trying to act. Antonio's actor was very good though; he may not have been interesting as a character, but he sold the personality and seemed to understand not to take things so seriously.

    I think they can use the plot from Shinkenger, but they should have added more depth to the story. For example, Samurai and Shiba name are traditionally Japanese, so adding the background why the american family became Samurai household. They should at least try to make things more reasonable. Because the context in the story is not fit events and traditions of American people. It is not convincing at all in the plot point and I think characters in the season did not truely believe that they have Japanese traits which made all of characters seemed very flat and less interesting.

    If I may borrow/build on your ideas for improving the Ranger storylines:
    - What you said about Kevin learning not to be a beta, figuring out what he wants and chasing it
    - What you said about Emily, but in this case Jayden would be the one assuring her there's nothing wrong with being second choice, and simply focusing on being the best Ranger she can be
    - Mike struggling with his belief he'll never be as good as Jayden, which fuels his comic relief tendencies in an attempt to stand out, with Jayden ultimately assuring him that it's not a competition, and they should all focus on being the strongest they can be as a team; as a result, Mike would also begin to take his training more seriously
    - Mia would have the storylines focused on how the Power Rangers can help people without morphing; she would also be the one to tell Lauren that the team's trouble falling in line behind her isn't because of they don't like her, because they bonded as a team with Jayden, and the kind of trust they built is irreplaceable
    - Jayden would piggyback on the above storylines because, as spoilers will tell, they all also apply to him in some way, and by having these interactions he's also learning to interact with them as a teammate instead of as a leader and becoming more humble because of it; and when he has his final duel with Deker, I would have him refuse to use the Red Ranger powers as a culmination of all those plots (stepping out from the shadow of RR, overcoming his hang up on just being the decoy RR, doing his best regardless of how he compares to his sister, and facing Deker as just Jayden), with the payoff being his fire symbol power now becoming stronger than Lauren's because of his more powerful fighting spirit, and using that symbol power to finish Deker
    From there, returning the role of Red Ranger to him would have been more out of a change in philosophy as to how to face Xandred - from following tradition with Lauren (the true Shiba heir) using the sealing technique on Xandred and ultimately putting the problem off to another generation, to bucking tradition with Jayden (the decoy) and the Rangers forging their own path and ending the threat of Xandred once and for all by destroying him.

    My only main problems with Samurai was the characters were boring, the sound effects sound WAY more cheap and cheesy than even 90's stock sound effects, the series just didn't have that cool Japanese Samurai aesthetic that Shinkenger had, and I feel they didn't go 100% with the ending. Xandred didn't even put them through the ringer like most final power rangers bosses do. If the final battle had ALL 6 rangers just overclocking their connection to the power grid by having EVERYONE go Shogun Mode AND EVEN THEN *_BARELY_* scrape the W by the skin of their teeth would've been so good. Also I feel Deker and Dayu were wasted. They could've easily had been redeemed and been rangers in their own right. Heck they could've made a plot where the red Wild Force ranger WAS Deker and he just lost his way to end up like this. It would've added SO MUCH DEPTH. But nah. They had to give us a boring cookie cutter plot. Thanks Saban. I hate it.

    Understanding Jayden and Laura does make alittle more sense when that's what happened in the Japanese couterpart, Shinkengers. The plot does follow it from what I've heard, in that he was only holding the spot for her and then she gets injured, so she gives him back the power so he can finish it. They even follow the other team not liking their red ranger is being replaced. They even kept the last name of Shiba for them. I would love a season where we get a female red, but unless that happens in Super Sentai first I really doubt it'll ever happen (unless they pull a Trini and ignore the suit skirt/no skirt)
    Also, I just realized Mia's last name is Watanabe, the same as another Samurai from a different team. Coincidence, reference, or is it more? I'm curious.

      Honestly, Power Rangers has always had bad actors in a lot of roles. It has never been known for it's stellar acting. Although I do agree, nothing wrong borrowing from the Sentai story. Time Force is one of the most loved seasons and it was largely the same as the Sentai. But they need to know when it will and won't work, Japan and the US are very culturally different. Footage or not taking elements and characters and plots that don't translate well in the west then re-doing them almost shot for shot is just lazy.

    I actually liked watching this season quite a bit, but there's one thing about it that's always bugged me, and I'm hoping someone in this forum has a suitable explanation. What the heck is a secret samurai cell doing in the United States (or New Zealand, you get the idea)?! Samurai were highly associated with the warlords of feudal Japan, and my understanding is they rarely, if ever, left that particular place and time. By this franchise's usual logic, I'd imagine whoever the original Shiba clan leader was somehow became interested in the California gold rush, packed up his kingdom, and, defying all logic and reason, surreptitiously sailed across the Pacific to seek his fortune. Failing to achieve any significant windfall, he instead decided to settle down and establish a family clan cell smack dab in the middle of American suburbia, no doubt anticipating the battle against Xandred. Intermingling with the local populace would be inevitable as time passed; hence, American samurai named Lauren and Jaden Shiba. Also, kudos to the Shiba clan if Lauren being the true family heir was the plan all along, which would make them arguably the most progressive feudal warlords ever.

    • @jjw8885
      @jjw8885 2 роки тому

      Because Power Rangers is made in the US? haha. Best explanation I can think of off the top of my head is that somewhere down the line of succession (remembering that "the powers are passed down from parent to child") one of the Japanese samurai rangers actually did marry an American and moved countries with them to the US. As a result, they became a blended family. This also helps explain why Jayden's surname is 'Shiba' despite him being an American.
      Remember also that Jayden and Lauren's father was previously the Red Ranger. Which would have made him the leader of the team in the 1980s or 90s, maybe? It's not exactly feudal Japan anymore. Not much need for Samurai anymore in the modern times. It now just so happens they have to stop Xandred's rise.

    Recently, I've actually watched the episode in full, and I've already made this comment before, but I'm gonna do it again: During the first Saban and Disney era, every PR adapted ONE Sentai season in ONE year, but for every Neo Saban era, every PR adaptation had to make TWO season to adapt ONE Sentai season! WHY?! That makes no sense! Why split each adaptation into two season! Saban NEVER did that before this, and they NEVE had to! Have they gotten dumb! And I know what you're about to say: Hey, don't blame Saban, they HAD to split each adaptation into two season because they were airing PR and Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon has a very strict policy about episode limitations, especially for their live-action shows. Well, okay, then here's my question: WHY WOULD SABAN AIR PR ON NICK IN THE FIRST PLACE?! Think about it: Saban had NO reason to put PR on Nickelodeon, so why would hey do that?! I mean if I was working for Saban, I would've said one of two things to Nickelodeon:
    1. Okay, we'll air PR on Nickelodeon, but all we ask is for ONE small favor: You see, as we've done in the past, every PR season adapted one Sentai season in one and forty episode. So all we ask is that you let us air as many episodes as we like in one season. Deal?
    2. Sorry, Nick, but we discovered that you have some sort of an episode-limitation policy. You see, as we've done in the past, every PR season adapted one Sentai season in one and forty episode. So unless you let us air as many episodes as we like in one season, we're gonna have to go to another channel to put on.
    But NO! Saban KNEW putting PR on Nick was a bad idea if they had to follow restrictions, and yet those morons STILL gave into Nick demands! WHY?! WHY WOULD THEY THAT?! IT MAKES NO SENSE! And the WORST part is this: After Super Megaforce, Saban began skipping Sentai season and going out of order! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?! And I sure hope someone has a legitimate reason!

    I seriously hate when people say the rangers treated Lauren like crap because that just isn't true. Yeah they said they missed Jayden a lot, but at that point they had been working with him for over a year. They had formed a bond and fought together for over a year. They weren't just going to accept Lauren right away after everything they'd been through with Jayden that just doesn't make sense logically. Even then they weren't even mean to her. They treated her well, they were just worried about Jayden since he ran away.
    As for her failing, she only failed because Xandred absorbed Dayu's humanity. If it wasn't for that he would have been sealed away forever. It wasn't anything Lauren did wrong, she didn't mess up or be too weak, Xandred simply altered the rules of his Nighlok physiology. Plus the only way they beat him was with the disk Lauren made so even then Xandred's final defeat couldn't have been possible without Lauren.
    Samurai is one of my favorite seasons honestly. Yeah it isn't as deep or meaningful as other seasons but I love all the characters and it's enjoyable from start to finish. It's one of the three seasons I watch yearly, the others being Time Force and Dino Thunder. I'll defend this season to no end because it gets far more hate than it deserves. You have a good video. It was enjoyable to watch and you seem to like Samurai unlike most people, but your points about Lauren seem like exaggerations.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  7 років тому +24

      I see your points, but here's where I'm coming from. They didn't really have a bond with Jayden outside of the worshiping him like the Demi-God he apparently is. At no point was I convinced that Jayden cared about his team beyond them just being there. And maybe that is just a result of his Samurai training making him a bit cold, but I wouldn't call that an argument in his favor. Lauren could literally save the world so it makes no sense to be anything but supportive of her despite what they may feel for Jayden. This is a situation many Ranger teams have been in and most have been able to pick them selves up from a event emotionally similar to this and get the job done.
      And I get why Lauren failed on the surface level, but that whole absorbing Dayu thing didn't need to happen, and certainly hasn't happened before, otherwise the Rangers would know that the sealing symbol wouldn't have worked, so it comes off as just an excuse to have good ol' Jayden save the day again.
      But despite all that, like I said, I liked this season. And if you can believe it, I actually liked it more after making this video, not less.

      Agreed. I just finally got to the episode when Lauren arrives and they aren't necessarily mean to her at all. First, they're surprised that Jayden isn't the head of the Shiba family. Then, they observed her, hesitantly, until Mike challenges her to a duel because they just didn't know what kind of person she was. And finally, Mike tries to prank her by getting her to eat Mia's cooking, but it backfires when she actually likes it, which isn't him being mean to her since he's pranked the other rangers in similar ways (notably replacing 'trail mix' with 'cat food').
      In the second episode after she arrived, there was only a concern that Jayden was fighting Deker, not that they were still against Lauren leading them. And even then, Kevin still stayed behind, continuing his 'must be loyal to the red ranger' personality, but also being the first offer her friendship. Only when she basically orders him to go, does Kevin finally let himself join the rest of his friends leaving Lauren and Antonio to have a heart to heart (hopefully) suspending her fear of not being good enough for the team.
      That's as far as I am so far, so I don't know if they do actual antagonistic things towards her later, but until this point they haven't.

    I loved Lauren the most and you can clearly see what she has gone through. When Jayden is in the infarmary after the fire flasher incident where Lauren is reavealed, she clearly expresses that she wants to be with him, to be a family which, if we go by the extreme focus on the sealing symbol, she needs after being brought up in secret and with probably nobody execpt her teachers. What does Jayden do? Ignore her wishes, walks out of the shiba house at a time that was about Lauren to make him leaving even more prominent and probably ignites the hero worship of the others even more all under the dumb argument that the team wouldn't follow her. I bet their wouldn't have been a problem with Lauren becoming the red ranger and I think the other Ranger would have been able to function normally without that. Sorry for my little rant, but just as an afterhought, you mentioned the passing down of powers in the families, was that ever outright stated? I mean that would be a logical reason, for why those 5, or 6 children needed to be the rangers, but I can't recall it ever being said? I read a lot of fanfiction, I know I'm gonna be hated for that and sometimes it gets confusing what is mentioned in canon and what is thought up by the fans.

    I don't think your version of how the twist would have been any better. It still wouldn't have made sense to me. If the roles of Lauren and Jayden are switched, it's bullshit that a person who trained their who life to do one thing would fail. There are many ways that the Samurai ending and Samurai as a whole could have been better. Switching Lauren with Jayden is not it. All of those things that you mentioned about how Lauren could be a "big sister" could have applied to Jayden as a "big brother" scenario. Have Lauren succeeded at the seal or have her fail for another reason that "she just wasn't strong enough". If you switch the characters, the team dynamic improves slightly, but the ending is still bullshit, Kevin will worship Lauren instead of Jadyen, Emily is still underutilized, and Mia still doesn't do anything.

Not even a family member and the reason that he didn't want people to fight was because he didn't want people to get hurt, pretty much he wasn't fully trained as a samurai but still held their values. Although the real red ranger was far younger, and way more annoying to the point where the other rangers sided with the red ranger they knew not because he was better, but because he had more experience and they didn't want to kill him

    I defiantly agree that the theme of choice should have been a more significant part of Samurai. Like how Emily chooses to become the Yellow Ranger in her sister's place, how Antonio decides to follow the path of the Samurai and become a Ranger, despite the others (namely Mentor Ji, Kevin and Jayden a little bit) initially being against it. Even Kevin having to choose between his dream of swimming in the Olympics vs his duty to the Samurai Rangers could have been played more.
    Mia could have had a moment with her brother Terry, about how his family wanted him to be a doctor, but she supports him in his dream, his choice, to be a musician. Or Mike could have a moment where he has to choose to let go of his ego and strife to be a better Ranger, a better person.
    Not to mention Dayu and Dekker, where Dayu's choice to save his life affected their lives forever. Dekker lost his humanity to his curse because of her choice, because whatever their intentions, good or bad, whether it's leaving a swim team to save the world or saving someone's life, there are always consequences.
    The biggest choice in the show would of course be Jayden choosing to return. But not because the other Rangers were crawling on their knees, begging for him to return. But because he decides to. He comes back on his own terms. Not because of duty or responsibility, but because it was his choice to make.

      @@henith7850 To be honest, they clearly should have hired an Asian actor for Jayden since you know, Samurai show.

    You want a Successful Female Red Ranger irregardless of whether or not Super Sentai does it and hands it to Power Rangers?
    I wish the intelligent, fierce, and ambitious Gia had been the Megafail/Super Megafail Red Ranger instead of the cliché-dispenser Troy.
    How's that for an idea? :3

      To fanfiction!
      Also, in that scenario, Super Megaforce would have the same colour/gender combination as the A-Squad. Interesting.

    The Disney Brain: Do you honestly expect us to be afraid of this guy? 3:40
    Me: Ummm... well yeah. There are reasons for his characters strength and weakness. For years, Master Xandred fought the Samurai Rangers, up until Jayden's father temporarily sealed him away before he died in battle. After returning from his banishment, it is revealed in later episodes that the sealing power Jayden's father had done to him had dealt a great blow to Xandred. Making Xandred dry up much faster than a regular Nighlok if he ever step foot on Earth, forcing him to recover his wound much longer. This weakness forces Xandred to stay in the Netherworld and send his minions to create as much misery as possible, so that the Sanzu River would overflow and flood Earth. Allowing him to battle the Samurai Rangers without drying out. Plus... Xandred is terrifying! There's a reason why he's called Master. In the episode "The Master Returns", After he set foot of Earth he easily defeated the Samurai Rangers in seconds... only for him to dry up afterwards.

    Hoo boy, this was a bad way to start off the new Saban era. Jayden was just unlikeable and Lauren was totally wasted. The theme song was good at least. Bulk and Spike were pretty much only there for nostalgia and comic relief. Antonio was a much-needed injection of energy and optimism, plus a guy that hacked into the morphing grid so he can help out his childhood friend by becoming a Ranger is actually a pretty cool concept. Dekker and Daiyu would've worked better as protagonists if they managed to have proper redemption arcs, though staying as tragic monsters is still a satisfying though sad end for them.

    Some great points here, but the thing about Jayden is, seeing him as a kid is life changing because of how awesome he seemed and cool he looked, though he is nothing to RPM Ranger Black

    It should be noted that Jayden's sister didn't fail at making the sealing symbol.
    Master Xandred made himself a little human, thus negating the effects of the seal.
    They weren't trying to make the first female Red Ranger fail. Geez.

    I've heard people say the problems with Samurai is that its too much beat for beat the Japanese version without explaining the cultural context. Me, I honestly loved it. It was the first Power Rangers season I genuinely got back into since the original Mighty Morphin days. Part of me that liked it was because it did feel like an anime dub of a clearly, meant for Japanese audience only type show; so things will get lost in translation, especially if audience don't fully understand cultural context. But things like that never really bother me because it encourages me to want to do research.
    Another reason I love this season is because I found the characters interesting. For one thing, when I think about a generic PR characterization, its even if they come off as standoffish or unfriendly at first, a power ranger will always be a person who anyone can become friends with. These guys; not so much, with exception of Antonio and Mia, especially Antonio. Everyone else felt like either they might say, "Hi" to you if you say "Good morning" to them first; to down right to giving you the sense of "Is he looking at me? Oh god! He's looking at me and giving me the stink eye isn't he!?" Jayden and Kevin.
    I also found the villains not only interesting, but complex in a really underrated way. It was ballsy to say the least that the two half nighlok didn't get saved in the end. As where every other Power Ranger season with this concept of humans become possessed, turned into evil monsters plots always have them be saved in the end. But nope, not Madame Emo, and Sir Loves his Swordsalot! Mia even tries to reach out to Daiyu, and Daiyu is just like, "Go F yourself!"
    That whole narrative of, "Let me help you."/"I don't want your help!"/Not taking help offered and having something worse happen in the end, is sometimes a real and often very harsh and sad part of reality not often presented in kids shows.
    This was also the season that slowly sparked the inspiration for my own PR fanfic, that started out as a Samurai fanfic exploring the question of "Are all nighlok evil?" After all sadness maybe seen as a negative emotion, but its a necessary one.
    Originally the fanfic was how the Samurai Rangers notices a girl hanging out with a nighlok, and think, trouble. But then its learned that she's trying to help the nighlok find a way to restore the Sanzu to be what it once was, a river that helped heal and in time carry away human sadness and grief.
    Then I decided to try my own PR story from the ground up with all new power rangers, villains, and mythos, and came up with the Paladin Force. But the idea of not all monsters are evil by default did carry over, and so did the girl character and what was originally the nighlok character. The nighlok character changed race so to speak, and is now a creature called a Noctian named Lok. Not only does Lok become a Paladin Ranger, but ironically his great grandfather was the last Paladin's team sworn enemy, because he nearly doomed the Earth by successfully plunged it into a ten years long night, some 300 years ago. And this is well documented history to the point it gets romanticized in movies and novels. And his great grandfather is referred to, King Grimgear the Terrible by the people on Earth, while in his own home, King Grimgear is praised as a hero and the greatest ruler of all time and even called King Grimgear the Mighty. And Lok is constantly reminded of polarized representation of not only his great grandfather, but his entire race as a whole.
    And when I say Lok is a monster, I mean he's straight up from a dark nether realm, and not just some monstrous alien from outer space.

    WHATCHU MEAN, Mike was that dude!!! He was one of the few that was actually beleivable in the show, the rest of them seemed so... stale or empty to me. Its like canned acting.
    And imo they've been told they were gonna be samurai/rangers their whole life, wheres the internal conflict they have to adapt to y'know?

    I'm glad you called out Kevin he was a good ranger but a bad character. Kevin had all the qualities of a good ranger but never got to exercise those qualities because he never got any shine. Kevin had one focus episode then he went back to worshipping Jayden. I hate how the writers consistently had Kevin worship Jayden & playing 2nd beta male fiddle to Jayden even though Kevin was just as good. The writers should had made Kevin as good as Jayden or better in a certain aspect.

    No it does make sense. Because it's a cultural thing. We here in the west, especially America, don't understand what a samurai is. A samurai is not just a warrior. They are an entire level of the feudal society of ancient Japan. They are nobility, basically. And the thing about that is. You cannot climb the ladder. You cannot earn the title of samurai. You must be born into it. And if you impersonate one is punishable by death. So it makes sense from a cultural sense that they would push away Antonio
