A family friend recently purchased one of these loaders from a surplus auction for 15k might be a worthy investment for your farm.
blow a transmission, engine or a track (undercarriage)...and you're up a special kind of creek lol......I'm ok paying someone to get this done so I can prep for seeding and planning it all out. Only one of me to get all this done....it's a bit overwhelming
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer yes sir I agree. That's what I told him. He has a few big machines. He's doing his own stuff. Love your channel brother.
Could have looked for a good 5000$ dozer and made the money back with all the content you could have filmed clearing the land
Stoney Ridge Farmer You're absolutely right. Not worth the headache and upkeep. We did a bit of land clearing on our land, I rented a 2015Cat 963 with 1500 hours on it to do some of the work because I had the time. Within a week, the hydrostatic drive went out. Guess what, I didn't own it, just had to call the rental company and get them to pick it up and bring out a replacement. Cost me $4000 for the month and was worth every penny. And now I don't have a machine sitting around holding the dirt down and being a lawn ornament.
...or rent one and do it yourself?
There is no easy, fast, or cheap way to clear land! Man that's a ton of work. Looks great!
The productive easy and cheap was to clear land is fence a bunch of cows in there and let them eat it out.
Free clearing, free meat, better topsoil
That, or fire
Separating the dirt from the trash is where a bulldozer with a root rake comes in.
Very glad to see someone who is not looking to exploit his land and is conscious about erosion. wooooo
Josh
If you use an excavator to load those stumps you will keep most of the soil right there and you can level it off after.
If you cleared the whole thing with an excavator you would have left most of the dirt where it was. probably would have been quicker too no? I would love that loader for moving pit run on my property!
You tell that operator this operator likes his work.
He knows his machine and doesn't push it to hard.
Good man...
You realize how lucky you are having dirt that nice I hope. Here in New England this would have taken 4x the time or 4x the money with the amount of rock/ledge. Looks great. Keep up the good work
A buddy of mine in Upstate NY runs a land clearing business. He has this giant grinder that runs off remote control , as he clears the land and makes the debris piles the grinder goes thorough the piles like a T-Rex in the chicken barn.. Then he turns the wood chips into the soil with a set of disks so the organic material is returned to the land.. Mother Nature gave us the land Its up to us how we care for it..
We dont have anything like that here in Rural NC...at least that I can find
Here in Southern Missouri, we take a backhoe dig the stump out, flip it & put it back in the hole, disc over & start seeding. When spring thaw comes around we roll the rocks under & fertilize. Quite a bit cheaper on the ole pocketbook. 🤔
Thanks Josh!
It's a privilege to actually watch an operator that knows how to run machinery and make look easy nice video for sure great drone footage
you need a loader with a root rake, used for clearing lots of brush stumps and rocks.
Root bucket with a grapple
"Every square inch of your land, you need to be using."
Great advice buddy, thank you. You are absolutely right.
I must be easily entertained cause watching the track loader work taking out stumps was fun
Its interesting watching the progress of the work frank is doing..
Have a good evening 🌻🌻🌻
I never thought of making the land pay for itself to be cleared by selling the lumber. Makes perfect sense now that I think about it! Learn something new every day! Wooo!
I love watching big equipment clear landscape as long as not for a housing development
Summer is here and everyone is super busy getting things going. More pasture more fences 😁 The farm is looking great SRF! 🚜-Woooooo!!!
Frank is making quick work of it ..it looks fantastic now that is some good looking land
Projects always take longer and cost more than planned ... Love that bucket design ... Good for trees and rocks ... Last farm I worked on had a D6 Tundra Cat from the Alaska pipeline ...
Frank must be an awesome operator, Great video.
Hi..... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
I love the sound of a Cat track loader like the 953C when it's getting throttle!!
Think of the days when you needed to do this and you had: You, a relative, a friend, a neighbor, and an axe, shovel, fire. You would tend to do enough for a veggie garden, next year a hen house, next a cow paddock and next year a pig paddock, etc. Of course you started with a true forest and used the timber to build your house. Then proceeded to build your farm.
Once you get the stump and debris in place. Cover it with a layer of manure. The enzymes will speed up the decomposition of the material.
Yes it is always entertaining to watch others work!
If Frank is watching over your land like it is his own, he is priceless. Maybe tip him a case of his favorite brew.
When this project is finished you can look back and see the the efforts you put into this and be proud of yourself😁🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Josh we cleared several fence rows and wooded areas over the years with my grandfather. We rented equipment and ran it ourselves sometimes others we paid to have it done was just part of the deal! Good luck my friend! Keep the videos coming!
The drone footage was good to me, thanks for asking :)
We are actually in the process of clearing 30 acres on our own farm for crops. It is definitely slow going! Hope you have a quick time of it, keep it up!
Omg 😮 I like it the way it is with the trails going around it and through it !!! It would make for some fun dirt bike riding !!!
yep....wouldnt' it be awesome to have a "Cup Truck" make a awesome course!
Awesome drone footage Josh. I enjoy watching Frank work and it isn't boring to me. Looking good already.
That 22 acres will make a nice 9 hole golf course after it’s cleared and seeded! LOL ⛳️
Great video Josh
Fun to watch a skilled operator move dirt!
Building a beautiful oasis with blood, sweat, and diesel. Something to be proud of, for sure!
Have you thought about planting it in clover for both erosion control and soil enrichment? No mowing to keep it short and the cows will still love it when they are on rotation in the field.
Yep...but we gotta wait till fall to plant clover or it will sprout and die in the heat
Nice drone footage Josh great video I appreciate them thanks buddy
Glad you enjoyed it
This is my goal this year- a couple hundred acres, enough to have cattle and hay and eventually a legacy to leave my son and Grand Princess.
Good going!! Love these videos!!👊😊🤠
Your gully will be one big hugelkultur mound. Plants somehing on it.
I agree!
Enjoyed your video very much, it will be great to see what it looks like in the fall when you seed it again for winter. Keep up the videos and your positivity 👍
Thanks Daniel
NOW THIS IS A BIG MACHINE FOR A BIG MAN.
LOOKING GOOD JOSH
I COULD HAVE SOME FUN WITH THAT MACHINE
Great video stoney man looking better every day
Gully equals cost effective to your wallet. I had all of our loblolly pines cut for free and then graded and pushed our stumps in our gully on the backside of our property. Walnut Cove Northern Forsyth County off Hwy 311. 25 minutes from you.
cool....and yes it does equal cost effective....look through the comments for a bit...so many folks telling me how I'm doing everything wrong....some even aggressive about it....I think folks see some giant machine on the internet and think that's how everyone does things...funny world we live in
Hi. I have a farm in Maine and am considering opening up some more land for fields. I have all but decided that when I do this I am going to use an excavator (with a thumb) rather than a dozer. My reasoning is I do not want to be turning over the soil the way a dozer does. Both methods are intrusive, but I want to maintain the soil layers as much as I can. Good luck, nice videos.
Ur still gonna have to go back over the land and smooth it out...you've gotta fill in the holes where the stumps were in order to have flat ground.....my suggestion is using both my friend. We could have used and excavator for this job..and finished it with the loader or a dozer...but you gotta fill it back in and push the dibris otherwise you'll just have a pile of stumps and rocks and a bunch of holes my brotha
You’ve got yourself a good dozer operator Josh. He’s making it look easy!
Perfect timing, lunch entertainment
While you have Frank there have him push you out a four position 100 yard rifle range.
Great idea! He could make a video!
As fast as ol' Frank moves that machine that might be another 2 days - lol
Great Drone footage
Glad you enjoyed it
This channel is so educational and Josh a good teacher, wondering if his local community colleges has asked him to come and teach some classes or be a guest speaker
local high school has reached out to me...but Covid has the whole world slowed down right now
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer hey that's great, the covid won't last forever and farming is so important everyone needs to eat and know where and how .....
Nice job. I am currently working thru this process on 30 acres of damaged timber due to hurricane michael 10/2018. Clear cut / salvaged trees and we piled up and burned piles. Going to spray and prep this fall to replant slash pine this winter.
It's sure beautiful soil for sure wow.
Looking good! Frank is sure doing a good job! Hope the folks that haul the windrows for you can shake some of that dirt off. You are working so hard to build soil, it would be a shame to put it in a gully. We do what we can though. Thanks for the work around these videos! Great job!
Hey, I love the Show!!! You said that you needed some Help On the Farm. Well Go Get That Kid that Doesn't Live Far from you. The Same Kid You Used To Help You Put Up Your Premier 1 Goat Fence. He Could Probably Need Something To Do and He Would Love To Have A Little Jingle In His Pocket From Probably His 1st Real Job. Helping You. Think About It!!!
excavator with the right bucket & a thumb might be faster than pushing with a dozer. you can also shake the dirt out of the stumps and handle rocks better.
Hey Josh thank you for the video I enjoyed it and I also enjoy the music to and thank you for responding to me about the dogs I know you're a busy man and I appreciate it your response back to me and I know how many hours you put in and I'm going to have to do the same thing eventually when I do eventually get my property I just don't want that much clear land more of its going to be heavily wooded land but a little bit of it's going to be Farmland like yours for my animals but from watching your videos and telling all of us on UA-cam how many hours you put in a day well I know what I got set up for myself ahead of time 10 hours a day just like you Josh but that's okay I'll put 10 hours in a day 2 because no one else is going to get her done so if you want things done and done right you got to do it yourself thanks again Josh stay safe and God bless man
You should plant Sorghum/Sudan grass for the summer. It grows rapidly, is great for the soil, makes a lot of organic matter, and winter kills with frost so you can get your other cool season grasses going.
Great work lad I love breaking in ground that drot driver has his work cutout would 20 or 30 ton 360 be faster than the wee doser best luck 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
It's old school word
Another nice video. At the 7:30 point where you sped up the video reminded me of someone shaving. LOL
We get charged 50 dollars an hour down here in Mexico gonna dump 14 hours into a new field project that’s gonna clear 4-6 acres of dirt
Getting it done looks like progress🚜
I believe a medium size dozer with a root rake would be more efficient. It leaves the dirt behind and allow windows of timber to dry and burn
That is one mean machine, thanks for showing us the vid.
Hi Stoney ridge, I'm here in the UK watching your videos. I find them very interesting, but don't know if you receive any comments from this far away. It would be nice to know if you do, but don't wish to take up too much of your time answering my questions. It would be nice if you could give us a mention on one of your you tube vids. Best of luck with your land clearing.
Your place is coming along awesome!
Woooooo! The Farm is looking great Josh 🇺🇸
Just had this done on 6 acres. Got plenty more to do, it does get expensive but worth every penny.
Maybe your local Cat dealer will see your video and have a little mercy and do you a real favor by dropping off a mid sized D-6 with a brush rake for a day or two like some of the equipment dealers do for some of the YT farmers?? Offer to do a review on their D-6!! You have lots of subs. They'll probably bring you two!! :-) Which will free up your smallish Cat loader to do what it was really designed for - loading various materials like your windrows of stump and brush debris instead of land clearing (even though we know what you're doing and mostly why). Love your videos!!
You doing good on the Field
Oh man that is awesome. You have an awesome piece of paradise there! I love watching machines work anytime! You could just show the go pro footage from on the loader and I would love it. I watch Farmall Fanatic drive the tractor 🚜 all the time. Thanks for the video bro!
Maybe you would enjoy some of my videos. Just starting out on UA-cam. Just working in an excavator mainly. Here is a link to one. ua-cam.com/video/U4-OocTwJ2U/v-deo.html
1000th LIKE. Man he is moving right along. I can already imagine the grass blowing in the wind
LOVE your videos brother! Man you are really making me want to purchase a drone! Those shots are incredible. You have a beautiful place!
DJI Spark is a great entry level drone if you're looking or Mavic Mini, here's a link for ya amzn.to/3fbKhZL (amazon affiliate link from Stoney Ridge Farmer)
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer appreciate it!
This is super cool I have to say
Another great video thank you
That is looking great Josh!
Hey Josh, awesome job. Appreciate this is a Big Project. Lots of different methods available and yours gets the job done. For separation, Ive seen guys build rocks screens from old Railway iron, similar to the rock tough grizzly screen (They look Great).
Looks like it is taking good shape. Hope you do not loose to top soil to washing down the hill.
Awesome progress! I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, we just bought 18 acres and will be implementing several things learned from your channel. Keep up the good work Josh.
That is awesome!
I been Following for a While, man thats a beautiful farm you got there mate regards from Australia Wooooooo
You are clearing quite a bit of land and I hope you are keeping as much of the top soil as possible to spread out over the cleared land so you won't have to haul more soil in to fill in the spots left bare. Those stumps will burn easily and you will have enough soil to fill in some low spots.
good work stoney
Josh, have you ever watched Let's Dig 18's videos, he has some awesome videos on clearing land with top-notch equipment?
yeppers I've watched him and actually talked to him a few times..he's about 2 hours south east of us
Great Job
Clearing land here myself, with a Bobcat T650👍🏼
An electric fence round the area and put in a load of pigs, they dig up the land clear scrub get fat and costs less for the dozer, pigs pay for the hire of dozer. I used pigs many times to clear woodland.
pigs won't fill in gullys and they won't grub up 3000lb stumps....I can't establish pasture if I can't mow it...so how could I clear 22 acres in less than 30 years with pigs? So I can mow it for hay? Please tell me so I can understand...everyone seems to have the answers...in theory..but in practice I could run pigs for 100 years here and never be able to run hay making equipment or a brush hog over the land....let's think big picture here buddy...it's not like I'm living in a $500,000 house here...we're saving money every month to do this sort of thing....to get it done and start new pastures for usable land...not brushy stumpy rocky disasters all over the place
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Pigs are not the whole answer, like the old saying "If I was going there I would not start from here" I have in the past when wanting to clean an area put pigs on to the land, they grub up and get rid of a lot of brush and make the land more visible .
You then get in your machinery with the land cleaned somewhat, the dozer operator can see more clearly the ground no holes or wet spots to get stuck in, and it takes less fuel and man hours to clean the area.
Yes you have to think ahead all the time, I am 5 10 and 15 years ahead on my plans for bits of land, I have a bit I want cleaned and I know the year before that bit gets done pigs will clear and grub the ground, it costs less in your inputs and the costs / returns off the meat covers / cheapens the total out put.
Their best use is hill areas that are not good for much but replanting for trees, they take out thick weed roots that compete for plant food.
I think you r doing a great job bud 👍🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸👌🏼
Looks great Josh, love the airiiel shots.
Very interesting, really like the overhead view, great idea about carrying the stumps it a low spot on your land. But you can still try to burn it later on if you choose to 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Awesome drone footage Josh!!!!
Can I have your life, even for just a week?
I started watching homesteading channels about a year or two ago on/off and at first I was like, "what the hell are these guys wasting their life with this garbage for?". The more and more I watched and thought about it, I realized what I was really thinking, as I sat in front of a computer working all day was, "what the hell am I wasting my life for?"
I still haven't found an answer.
My wife and I have this same discussion...she works in the Operating Room...a bunch of pretentious snobby know it all surgeons and anesthesiologist talking about how awesome they're last vacation was....to me...why would I waste $10k going on vacation when I could take $10k and some elbow grease and make my land something to be proud of for generations to come...seems stupid to walk around looking at everyone elses stuff when I can spend time and money on my own place...increasing my knowledge and net worth right!
It took my wife the better part of 20 years to reach the point of realistically becoming self sufficient and now we have achieved just that. It is truly a lifestyle - it isn't for everyone - but with age, many realize there is more to life. That is where we are in our early 50's - I woudn't change a thing and we inspired along the way by channels such as Stony Ridge Farmer. We now have our own channel highlighting our journey....
Damn son, some commenters are pushy lol. I appreciate the time spent sharing your vision with us SRF. ✌️
That is a big project!
yes it is ...I'm a bit overwhelmed
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer looks like you are making progress quickly!
What about a overhead satellite view tour of the farm? You know to help understand the layout. Thanks for letting us follow along with your progress. Sorry, for suggesting more work for you.
A big dozer and root rake or excavator would work well. Plus on projects that big just buy the machine. Pay the monthly notes while you use it. Then resell when done. Cheaper than renting and or hiring someone.
As fond as SR Farmer is of buying equipment, I am surprized you didn't buy a mulcher and grind away on the area. I'm sure this will turn into beautiful pasture.
Josh, I know you have hired a forestry mulcher in the past, that seems a better option, it keeps the vegetable matter in the soil. A dozer pushes it away. I really like the meri-crusher system, it is a sub-soil mulcher that basically roto-tills the trees, stumps and rocks.
Try and find a company that does what ur talking about....then get back to me lol...if we could mulch this we'd be doing it my brotha
I have an idea for you, how bout saving some choice stumps and boulders and clean them up and put in your pond for fish structure....
yep...we'll be rolling rocks off in the ponds for years!
My honest opinion would be an excavator with a thumb would work better, then a D5 dozer to level up.
yep....but we don't have access to that on this go round lol
Hey big guy, why not forest mulch and subsoil the chips a little. And then come back with a rip it with tight rippers, rake then disk...(no clean up ,no hauling and nutrients back in soil)
Wish I was near by..I'd hook you you up.you food,big farmer u. Lol ✌
