Unpacking Human Rights and Safety Challenges and Concerns in Ethiopia in the Context of the Upcoming Global IGF

Purpose
- To provide an opportunity for learning about and discussing the human rights and media freedom context in Ethiopia.
- To create an opportunity for people who would like to participate in the 2022 IGF in Addis Ababa to ask questions they might have about safety concerns, in the context of the recent conflict in the northern parts of the country.
- To facilitate interaction between civil society, digital rights activists and members of the technical community in Africa and globally with those working in Ethiopia.
- To facilitate interaction between CSOs who plan to participate in the IGF with the IGF Secretariat and the Ethiopian IGF Committee.
Session outline
1. Short historical overview of recent history in Ethiopia (e.g. last 50 years) and how this led to the current situation and outline of the current human rights context
2. Summary of inputs received in response to short survey that we will circulate prior to the event
3. Input from the Ethiopian IGF organising committee
4. Input from the IGF Secretariat and an update preparation including a briefing on safety and security
5. Some reflections on previous IGFs that took place in countries with human rights challenges
6. Discussion
