  • Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) is a major figure in the history of German Expressionism, yet despite her importance to art history, her work has never before been the subject of a museum retrospective in the United States. While her paintings and drawings have appeared in group shows at museums and galleries, and there is even a Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in her hometown of Bremen, “Paula Modersohn-Becker: Ich bin Ich / I Am Me” marks the first full-scale presentation devoted to the artist in this country. In the course of her brief career - which was cut short at the young age of 31 because of a postpartum embolism - Modersohn-Becker produced more than 700 paintings and over 1,000 drawings.
In this video, exhibition curator Jill Lloyd brings you through highlights of this landmark exhibition presented at Neue Galerie New York.

I just visited the Neue Galerie first time today. I actually got to study some of Paula Mondersohn-Becker’s pieces in some of my college German classes. This special exhibit was great, I will be back!

Fabulous exhibit. Incredible woman/artist who died too soon. Childbirth is still dangerous for women, we must do better.

Loved this exhibition and hope to revisit it before it leaves. Another amazing woman artist who didn't get her dues.. This certainly tries to show who she was. Beautiful.

Thank you for this video, it is long overdue. I first came across Paula Modersohn-Becker in the book "Broad Strokes" 15 Women Who Made Art and Made History (In That Order) by Bridget Quinn @bquinnterest. I had never heard of Paula but this book gave me a peek into her and her very important contribution to women and their art. Her work and the authors commentary certainly left me engaged with her work. I highly suggest getting the book. Thank you again.
