- Let's talk about steps for screening and investigating symptoms:
Start by learning what is normal for you by doing regular self-exams. The Know Your Lemons app has fun audio guides that can teach you how!
Next, if you are eligible for a mammogram, talk to your doctor about your screening plan, book an appointment, and go.
For those who menstruate, the best time to get a mammogram or do a self-exam is a few days after your period ends. This is when things are less impacted by hormones and usually less tender. The Know Your Lemons app can help remind you when it’s the best time to self-exam each month.
If a mammogram indicates that cancer might be present, the next step is usually to get an ultrasound to look at the specific area of concern. If the ultrasound comes back normal, then screening returns to the usual routine.
But what if you notice a change on your own?
Talk to your doctor about your concern, and ask for testing to investigate. Remember, you know your body best. You don't need to justify your concerns to others, or be a certain age to get a test![pause 0.25s]
When there is concern about a possible symptom, the doctor will usually order a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound together.
After these tests are done, there are usually three options:
No suspicious findings with no further testing needed. In this case, go back to your regular self-exams and screening schedule.
The results suggest that a closer look is needed. A closer look may sometimes involve a breast mri.
The results suggest that a biopsy is needed. Looking at the cells under a microscope through a biopsy will give a definite answer.
Most biopsy results turn out to be fine, so don't panic if you need to check to be sure!
But if it does come back as positive for cancer, know that taking proactive steps to investigate can give you a greater chance for a good outcome!
