This was one of the first wrestling shows I watched as a child. So many memories. I was so amazed with the ladder match back then (still am, to this day).
Ah Extreme Rules, back when every match had a stipulation, somehow this concept gets lost in a few years. Also Sick Puppies another GOATed theme. How did we go from Matt Hardy feuding with Jeff to being randomly drafted to Raw and in the US title scene to then back on SD as a face again if nothing happened in the span of 3 months? Lmao Mysterio/Jericho was excellent and it's insane how good of a moment Jericho ripping Rey's mask off was when it's not something we've seen a dozen times like with Penta in AEW. Punk gets his win back over Umaga and this is the last time we see Umaga... ever. He's released a few days later and then sadly passes away before the end of the year. Tommy Dreamer winning the ECW title was a nice moment I guess, much better than him winning a title in Impact 14 years later lol. Santina Marella vs Vickie Guerrero in a hog pen match, seriously who the fuck is this for? Like who in the writer's room sees this and goes yeah that's something the fans will love? Lmfao So Batista gets legit injured but is able to manage for the match with Orton. Naturally we're gonna have Orton retain thru heel antics like every other time and then write Batista off so he can recover right? Nope instead let's have him win the title knowing he'll have to vacate it the next night, so that we can then put the title BACK on Orton. Great thinking. While I like the idea of Cena/Big Show emphasizing on "how" Cena was gonna make someone Big Show's size tap out, the finish doesn't really spark much creativity. If anything it makes me wonder how the STF in general hurts as a move. Hardy/Edge was an all time ladder match, I love how this was the culmination of 10 years of these two destroying each other in these types of matches, really brings their careers full circle. The finish is so clever too, since the whole story was Jeff always being inches away from winning the big one, so Edge literally getting pulled thru the ladder and unable to do anything as Jeff stands inches above him as he pulls the title down and wins the match. Awesome storytelling to end this legendary feud and then we immediately roll right into another legendary feud about to unfold with Punk cashing in MITB. Going from Hardy/Edge to Hardy/Punk for world title programs is why SD in 09 was absolutely incredible.
I’m gonna make a wild prediction and say that it was Vince who found the Santino and Vickie story to be hilarious. The WWE title scene was a complete mess in 2009. It was solely being defended between Orton, Cena, and Triple H. Batista and Sheamus got sprinkled in throughout but that’s really about it. Jeff/Edge is such a great ladder match, and it leading directly into the CM Punk feud makes it even better.
