A fact I'll be presenting is unknown to most, but I've talked about it in the Hwei Discord a few times: Rylai's is super effective, for lack of better terms, because most of his Q spells have amazing engage range but lack mostly any kind of follow-up on their damage. By this, I mean that if QQ and QW slowed, Rylai's would be redundant with his kit and wouldn't be as effective as it is right now. Multiple factors are to be considered, and I'll do my best to synthesize them: 1. The stats it gives are a nice buffer. No mage shrugs at the idea of 400 extra health to do a play that's a little riskier in 1v1s or even 2v1s XD 2. QQ and QW become amazing at engaging onto enemies trying to dance around your E spells-range. Tanking even 1 QQ can result into an easy pick-off on solo, immobile targets. QW becomes a tool that makes chasing, too easy. I've usually overstepped when chasing with a Rylai's QW, but a good player can definitaly stack Rylai's and Horizon Focus and become a tactical warfare base from an amazing range while keeping onto the target. 3. Rylai's slow stacks with QE's slow. It's a very rare occurance I believe, because the general opinion was to distrust me until I provided video evidence. Rylai's and QE's slows happen to be addtitive. Tried to keep it concise. Those are effectively the reasons why Rylai's is currently a slept-upon item when it comes to Hwei! EDIT: As an aside, thank you for this amazing commentary. I've managed to learn a lot thanks to your videos' amazing informative quality... I'll be starting a climb on Hwei (since he's the only champion I have fun playing.) Let's see how it goes!
dont sleep on ww. Played vs galio and level 6 you let him E on you on purpose but just before it hit i ww and chased him down after. In terms of build, Rylais will apply the 10% bonus damage from horizon focus to all your abilites and its actually a cheap build that does insane dmg. Liandry, rylais and horizon focus
16:58 I used to think that WW was quite useless to, but actually after getting more used to Hwei I realized that shield is huge and helped both me and my allies to survive multiple situations and ganks.
For the spectator thing, you can press Ctrl+Shift+Z and then scroll up/down with the mouse wheel to zoom in and out, so if Hwei is hitting enemies from far away you can still see what he's doing ^^
His boots choice make sense when think about the fact that his passive has no cooldown so as long has he combo his spells with each other the passive will proc again and again & in teamfight it will actually activate as many time as the number of people hit by his spell I really think this the most underated part of his kit
@@eebbaa5560you are likely just playing poorly or are expecting too much. CDR is probably his most valuable stat imo, and it seems that’s the general consensus. It’s like OP said, the passive proc’s are a large bulk of Hwei’s damage and the ability to delete waves more often and take a heavy utility role for both yourself and others makes for a very strong midlaner. You have so many strong slows and CC so to have those up more often, and your q basically on a 2.8 sec CD roughly like 3 items in it feels much nicer. I’ve been going Liandrys, Cosmic drive, and whatever else after and it’s proven to be pretty nice. Movement speed for kiting, 100+ CDR to spam more, and enough damage to kill full waves in one rotation.
5:30 i remember qiyana being broken at its release (just like any other champion) and i remember players crying about being oneshot by her so she got overnerfed and never buffed again cause everybody just forgot her, me included. Its been like 4 years and she is still one of the few champion i periodically keep forgetting about their existence, others being skarner, ivern and asol; last two got buffed or reworked and they rised again in popularity, but qiyana and skarner are just non existent and when you find them they always lose.
I've been trying Precision secondary with PoM so that I don't have to spam WE constantly, because I feel like you always go OOM even with WE especially with lower CD builds. I haven't seen many people run PoM so I'm wondering what your thoughts are on it. I can't decide whether to take Comet or First Strike though. The Sorcery tree is nice, but at the same time losing Minion Dematerializer is extremely noticeable. I also agree that the Rylai's slow is comfy but also feels wasted. I think I'd run Seraph's (and avoid going PoM) in order to solve late game mana problems at that point.
@@brendanbudniak2261 You can run PoM with Comet and get Manaflow, although I had no problems without it when I ran First Strike with Precision secondary.
Hmm I think you'd be giving up a lot, if you give up demat + cosmic you have a weaker early game and a harder time with longer flash CD. If you give up domination 2nd then you lose eyeball + ultimate hunter which is really good scaling. Imo neither of those are really worth giving up for PoM
So the main goal of Hwei laning is neutralizing it? By pushing waves with QE and looking to EE them into it if they walk close, or just push the wave in then fish for EE QQ?
I like arcane with GS and resolve 2nd taking BP and revit. the revi makes his WW very strong, Ive won fights I def wouldnt have or tanked a turret shot or ignite easily. Mixed with BP makes him very resilient during trades and fights in general. Also using his WE for zoning or hearding your op is great for laning ulti, and your Q being such low CD its back up before ulti even pops. Once youre a few items deep he becomes so oppressive with the amount of abilities you can spam and it really makes your ops focus on doging stuff more than attacking allowing your jun/team to converge onto them while theyre kinda mentally indisposed. Hwei has def became one of my fav champs already. Very great champ
you said shadowflame was an awfull choice from syndra bc the triple ap, but isnt the more ap your team has (and his team mr stack at the same time) the more valuable your magic pen is?
Magic pen is less valuable the more magic resist your opponents have. If you have 20 magic pen and your opponent has 40 MR, 40-20 = 20 you cut his MR in half which is huge. If your opponent has 100 magic resist and you reduce it by 20 that's pretty ineffective in comparison, so against high MR targets you want % magic pen (void staff) and against low MR targets you want flat magic pen.

I still feel as if Ludens shadow flame with sorcs is best build the damage is incomparable. Liandries is only good on champs that maintain constant DoT. Champ feels more like a burst mage than a DoT mage like malzahar, brand, heimer etc.
Kinda disagree, there's too many HP/MR in the game atm for ludens shadowflame sorcs to be the go to build. Situationally it's good but not all the time. Also the QE works really well with liandry I find
@@collamus6901the champ has abilities that allow him to be a control mage and that causes people to put him in that category but due to the fact you will be using his other abilities in various situations and they share a cooldown you lose a lot of damage. Champ functions way better with raw ap and penetration
Durability patch happened. When TTK goes up, burst < DPS. Historically, sorcs have been way overtuned. They don't want carries sideboarding into defensive boots like in S3. I think I saw somewhere that riot's gonna nerf lucy boots to 15% CDR for preseason.
bc cooldown reduction on summoners and you spells is much better than flat pen also the cost is much cheaper for t2 boots if they build mr items flat pen is kinda useless and those works better on assasins like akali,kata etc.
Can someone explain why, literally no one goes nashor tooth first item. When it gives the highest dps. Sure Ludens/Lissandris is alil better poke. But what a coward way of playing. Like I enjoy fighting, and face trading. Haha especially twisted fate. Is literally everyone on this game stupid? I saw lissandris burn for 18 a tick 3 items, Vs bruisers. And comet do 20, instead of electrocute? Nashors also scales much much higher.
Most mages have low auto attack range and so stepping up to auto attack (especially without having some tank stats to back it up) can just result in instant death. There are some mages where nashors probably could be bought sometimes (LB, TF, Ahri, Ori etc) but they have to compete with other very good items too.

That's because you don't understand why he's broken. It has nothing to do with sheer stats. It's the fact that he can completely change his playstyle and adapt to situations at any point in the game, from being a burst carry, to a utility support to a zoner, to a long range artillary cannon etc without changing his build. Hwei is by far the most versatile champion in the game and now he's got crazy stats to go with it.@@nishinoja3775

He feels like his big strength are teamfights and I think the cdr boots/Landrys build suits his strength better than the burst build.

How about building a stopwatch as a third item?
Normally if you're going stopwatch it should be 2nd item, because after that it's too much of a DPS loss unless you already have void/rab

for hwei specifically, i think ability haste is more valuable than one shot burst damage.

Nah i wont justify rylai's just because it migt have ideal use 1 or 2 times. plenty of times everything he did could be done without rylais.

Just another showcase of why Riot needs to stop balancing based on winrate. Champion was strong, now he's braindead overbuffed.
