  • "Autumn moon on a calm lake" (Lu Wencheng) was composed by Lu Wencheng (1898-1981) and is based on a folk melody from Zhejiang province, and adapted to the Cantonese music style. Inspired by the Xihu (West Lake) near Hangzhou, depicts the soft breeze blowing over the calm lake in the evening with branches swinging gently and lotus flowers floating on the lake.
Liu Fang is an internationally renowned virtuoso of pipa and guzheng. Born in the province of Yunnan, she studied at the Shangai Conservatory and is now living in Montreal where she performs traditional Chinese music as well as contemporary compositions (www.liufangmusic.net).
The plucked board zither guzheng has a long history that can be traced back to 220 B.C. It has movable bridges for different tunings and the performer plucks the strings with plectra using the right hand, while the left hand touches the strings to produce different tone colors and ornaments.
Concert held within the project ‘Music from China’ organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute of Venice, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME) of Leiden, and the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove.
