  • In the 1990s "Riverdance," a boisterous celebration of Irish music and dance, became an unlikely show-biz phenomenon, with sold-out performances around the globe. Now it's back with a 25th anniversary show, headed for New York's Radio City Music Hall. Correspondent Mark Phillips talks with John McColgan and Moya Doherty, producers of the original "Riverdance" and its newest iteration, and with 22-year-old dancer Amy-Mae Dolan, who has never known a world without "Riverdance."

I remember being given special permission by my Mum to stay up and watch Riverdance in the half time show at Eurovision. I had to go and get my pyjamas on and be ready to go straight to bed when it finished. (Yeah right! I loved it and even 25 years later I still adore it!)
When I got to Middle School, Riverdance The New Show was on tour locally so a group from school went to The Derngate Theatre in Northampton to see it. I was absolutely transfixed! I would love to see it again if possible.

I could tell Flatley was a bunch of egotistical hot air even through the TV (can only imagine what he was like to be with in real life) but boy could he dance. A spinoff was called "Burn the Floor" featuring several different types of dance styles EQUALLY amazing as Riverdance. If those kids didn't make you want to go outside and run around the neighborhood, you might have been comatose! Great stuff!

We have several Irish Dance schools in my area. Every year the largest Irish music and cultural festival outside of Ireland itself is held here and I go to all of them. One thing I have been seeing since Riverdance is how much the competition dancing has gone the "Toddlers and Tiaras" route and it is very disappointing. The dancers are so glitzed up with huge curly wigs, tons of make-up, and even LED lights on their costumes. I really wish we would go back to where the dancing is the important part, not the look. On the other hand, I am seeing more and more kids from other ethnicities getting into step dancing which is really cool. One of the African dance schools teams up with one of the Irish dance schools and they perform at both Irish Fest and the African World Festival. It is a great way to see both the similarities (especially the drumming) and the differences in the two styles.

As Michael tells it, he didn't storm out of anything, he was fired; Michael's attorney contacted him and told hiim he was out. And as for the contract matters, again, it isn't quite as it is explained here: there was to be the loss of control Michael had over the coreography; there were demands that all Michael's material be owned and copyrighted by Riverdance; and there was complete restriction put upon Michael from augmenting the show to be more than just a generic production. So let's be a bit opened minded, shall we, that we weren't there and that it's best not to take jabs at either Michael or Riverdance.

They really need to have Riverdance take a good loooong look at what Irish immigrants did to Step when they got here...it evolved into something called Buck Dancing. Take a look. American Clogging is also a descendant of Irish Step Via first the pre-revolutionary war immigrants first from Ulster in the early 1600s and then later when they left Ireland enmasse during the potato famine, later on.

Irish dancing roots are not in pubs and catholic priest had nothing to do hands by side. What rubbish. Irish people stop saying what Americans want to hear.

There is no real reason for the dancers with arms at the side, some say it is to do with during British rule refused to move their upper body, but the church has also being given as also the reason, so you cannot say that this is wrong since it is not really known.

I like Michael Flatley, but he really had an ego. He must have been spoiled as a child.

Ego or not which Flatley had In spades. When I saw River Dance without him. Sorry I was unexpressed. The replacement dancer was good. But he was no Michael. They should have gave him that contract. Yea. I know some will like this comment some won’t. But I call it like I see it. There’s good. Then there AWSOME. I used too dance a long long time ago. I can most certainly tell the difference

Had it not have been for Michael Flatley It would have not been As good or as successful Riverdance made a total mistake by letting him go and this 40 "demands" considering what he made the show should have been given it launched him to do the Best irish dance show BY Far Lord of the dance enough said.
