Hawker Centres - the beating heart of daily Singaporean life. It’s known as the very essence of Singaporean culture and the tradition of communal dining. I asked my best friend Yoke to guide us through choosing some of the very quintessential Singaporean dishes. Singapore hawker centres offer these small, local food stalls, many of which specialize in just one dish and it essentially unites Singaporeans from different ethnic backgrounds.

    ABOUT ME:
In 2013, I started my solo travel journey, leaving Indonesia in 2016 to become a full-time traveller and UA-cam creator. My background in International Relations has fueled a profound interest in exploring different countries. My content focuses on exploring different cultures through the lens of a solo female traveller, aiming to capture real-life interactions and experiences.
My travels kicked off with a five-month trip across Asia, after which I moved to China in January 2017 to work as an English teacher-my first time living abroad. I left China in 2018 to fully commit to creating videos on UA-cam, where I share my travels and the cultures I encounter.
Living nomadically since 2016, I settled in England in early 2022 after marrying my British husband, David. Now based in the UK, I continue to travel and share my adventures on UA-cam.

Excepting the weather, we loved Singapore. We stayed a week last April and ate a Hawker centers except for breakfast which was included at our hotel. Our last two nights, we splurged and stayed at the Marina Bay Sands. The Hawker Center underneath MBS is air-conditioned and the dishes were about 2-3 Singapore dollars more. After we watched your video we went to our local Chinese hole in the wall and ordered wonton noodle soup. We are lucky as Mei's Kitchen has about six authentic soups you will not find at most Chinese restaurants in the USA.

Nice to feature Bedok and Golden Mile hawker centres as it is more known to locals. The pan fried pork dumplings or guo tie, we usually eat it with black vinegar and ginger slices. Cheong fun is a canton food essentially. There should have a fried chilli oil paste at the side for your cheong fun. You should eat that with it instead of the soy sauce and cut chillies.
For the beef noodles and other soupy food, we dip the chilli sauce as we eat instead of pouring everything into the soup :D The lime is added to the chilli sauce.
Siew dai means less sweet as it can mean reduced condensed milk or sugar, depending on the type of drink ordered.
Did you try other cuisine like Malay/Indian or Nonya?

The carrot in our carrot cake is actually the white carrot in Chinese, essentially white radish. To be accurate, it should have been called white carrot cake, but then it would have been weird as there is white and black version of the dish, and confusing to call them white white carrot cake and black white carrot cake haha.

Your viewers may like to know the original history of the fried fritter that you ate with the coffee. The fried fritter usually comes as two long fritters fried together. Us Chinese have a five thousand year history and long memories especially with injustice, evil people and their anti-nation deeds. During the Han dynasty, the maurauding Huns from the west attacked the Han people trying to conquer the nation. A great Chinese general by the name of Yeh Fei was sent to defend the nation. He and his Chinese army managed to drive off many of the Hun sorties. However, the Han Prime Minister by the name of Wei Chung Xian was a traitor bought by the Hun attackers. He wanted to be the next Han emperor. Wei sent 18 consecutive golden military badges to command Yue Dei to bring the army back. When finally The Dei returned he was executed together with his family. Subsequently the Han people rebelled and took back the country.
However the Prime minister Wei and his family were arrested. The appeace the angry citizens, Wei and his wife were bound together and deep fried in a big wok in front of the palace.
To commemorate these two traitors, foodsellers made twin strips of dough and deep fry it and sell it everywhere so the Chinese people will not forget these evil traitors.
So this fritter named You Tiao {oil strip, in mandarin}, or You Cha Kuay (oil fried Wei, spoken as Kuay in hokkien dialect), or Yow Cha Kwae in Cantonese dialect).
So if you hate treachery or evil people, eat more of it - every morning!
The dumpling also has a history but that's another historical event.
