I HATE This Dress Shirt Problem, Luckily It's EASY To Fix

  • Hey, I'm SD, and today we're diving into a common but pesky problem known as the batwing-yep, that annoying excess fabric flapping under your armpit when you wear a dress shirt. This fabric just hangs loose, totally missing where your actual arm is, making you feel like you're wearing a parachute in disguise. Now, you might think fixing this is as simple as adjusting the side seams and sleeves, but hold up-it's not always a straightforward fix.
    Here’s where a little geometry and anatomy knowledge comes into play. Don’t worry, we're keeping it light-think seventh-grade math class. Tailoring isn't just about slicing and dicing fabric; it's about understanding how your body moves. Take the shoulder joint, a smooth operator that lets you do everything from snagging secret snacks above the fridge to tying your shoelaces without turning into Hulk Hogan.
    To get those shirts fitting snug without turning into a chafe city, align your side and arm seams to about a 50° angle to match your natural armpit contour. And hey, a degree here or there? Not a dealbreaker. We're not after perfection; we're customizing for comfort.

    Thank you for this one. It's already hard for anyone to buy good fit off the rack, but as a big guy, this and your other tips are super helpful in making me look as good as possible.

      Glad it was helpful! And being a bigger guy sucks because you either wear clothes that are too small or waaay oversized. Tailoring completely changes that! What are some of your favorites in your wardrobe now?

    This video touches on a problem I actually had that discouraged me from doing anymore tailoring. I did a dress shirt that looked really good but I couldn't figure out why it made my shoulders hurt so bad. It was unbearable to wear for more than 15 minutes. SD will you do a video displaying this method on a shirt that is too baggy for you and give us plenty of before and after footage (preferably side by side) of the shirt itself and then the shirt as it fits you?

      Sure will, I'm going to make a new dress shirt tailoring tutorial implementing this method into it soon!

    Love your videos, you got me fixing all my shirts instead of buying new ones and they fit better than ever. But I know a bit of geometry (PhD in mechanical engineering) and it would be helpful when you speak about an angle, to mark the one you are speaking about. At 2:13 about you even made a nice overlay animation, but the angles are not marked. I assume you mean the ones left and right, between red and white, but on that sketch they look more like 30 degrees. At 2:22 you have a different (unmarked) representation of the angle again, so now we have a lot of different possible angles, so as I tell our students: always mark everything cleanly ;) Thanks for all your efforts!

      Yes that was a poor oversight on my part, go by 2:13 not by 2:22. 2:22 was moreso to show the dress shirt sitting comfortably on my armpit.

      I'm so glad! I love comments like these! And I was talking to someone about the price of tailoring the other day. You're right, when you do it yourself you literally save THOUSANDS!

    Which angle is 50°? The illustrated angle looks roughly 135° to me but I think maybe you measure angles differently in sewing and maths? I am very clueless at sewing. Is it like a 50° change of heading to make a 130° corner?

      I noticed the same thing. I’m going to follow the diagram and not the words.

    • @StylishDTailors
      @StylishDTailors  9 днів тому +1

      Yes go by the diagram with the blue shirt (the dark blue one) instead of the light blue one. That one was moreso to show the fit as opposed to the angle you want to use. Poor oversight on my part.

    I genuinely don't understand what your doing with your pins, Are you bending them or what cause EVERY time I put them in and test fit they, Fall out, poke you, Don't hold the fabric in, Like please explain!

    • @StylishDTailors
      @StylishDTailors  7 днів тому

      You know I hear that from time to time, I should make a tutorial on just the pins. But to answer your question I push it up and then immediately down, so that it goes through both sides of my fabric. I hope that makes sense, i'll show you soon!
