Early today my brother texted me that his friend died last night. My brother, 24yo, is serving in my country's military on the Saudi-Yemen border, along with his deceased friend. His friend was killed with three others, all were as young as my brother. I used to love this song, and how it is very touching but not after Abdul (my brother's name) joined the troops two years ago. Since then, listening to it, I can't resist hearing the story of Abdul not Charlie in the song. I hope the war(s) ends, I want my brother back, I want this song back!
My bother is fine. The war is still ongoing & he among many others are still serving on the border. Hopefully it will end soon and have our beloved ones back safe and sound. Thank you all
Why is every Lumineers song SO. FRIGGIN’. GOOD?! Is it even possible for them to write a bad one? This one, especially, is splendid and haunting, especially live. They’re my favorite band, by a long shot.
My brother is serving for our country, and has been since right after college and is currently still active, he's my parents first born. My grandmother is named Lillian, "Lillian, don't hang your head, love should make you feel good, in uniform you raised a man". Everything about this song hits home, brings tears to my eyes.
Charlie boy, don't go to war, First born in '44 Kennedy made him believe We could do much more Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh And Lillian, don't hang your head, Love should make you feel good In uniform you raised a man, Who volunteered to stand Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh Play the bugle, play the taps Make your mothers proud Raise your rifles to the sky, boys Fire that volley loud News was bad on Upland Ave., Metuchen mourn our loss Sons rebelled, while fathers yelled, And mothers clutched the cross Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh Play the bugle, play the taps Make your fathers proud Raise your rifles to the sky, boys Fire that volley loud
Living in the Keys … a lot of music I miss out on. We have our Pirate Radio station which is really good. But besides that. I find my music on line. So I’m always excited to find these gems!!
Saw them live at CMAC..gave a synopsis of this song…started playing it. Anyone whos had a relative, lost a relative in a foreign war. This sh*t just hit different after.
I first heard this song about two and a half years ago and when I heard it I was weirdly drawn to it. I didn’t have a reason to love it as much as I did but it was a special connection. I forgot about the song for a year and a half because I moved on, I forgot how to be sad. Until, I was in math class and it played in my head. I instantaneously had the same connection. In august 2020 I heard the song again and sobbed. I was in such a bad state of mind. I wanted to k!ll myself. My name is Lillian and when it said,”Lillian don’t hang your head, love should make you feel good.” I knew I had to keep moving. It kept me going for awhile. But basically what I’m trying to say is that this song truly did save me. I just need to be saved again. Because that line doesn’t work anymore.
I love Mumford and gang, but no thanks. IMHO this is one of those perfect songs you just can’t possibly improve upon. Again, just my opinion, but as a diehard Lumineers fan, I’m a bit biased. LOL
I love this song but the Cello it's sounding sooo loud and it's not a good Cello either, it's not tune well... I'm a cellist and violinist I know what I'm talking about, and the mandolin by the other hand sounds so softly, it's hard to listen!! But I still love the song
the cello is run through a synthasizer, you make it sound as if or an expert........sorry but u don't know much! that cello makes the song. the mandolin was adjusted after the clapping began. live shows are difficult, n need adjustments.you will notice that when the mandolin was adjusted the camera panned the audience touched up after the video. you have a lot to learn!!!!!!!

how is Abdul doing?
Hope your brother is doing good and is safe 🙏🏾
Bring all troops home!

Each of their songs puts you right there in the story they’re telling. Very well done.
To be young in 60's US. The eternal optimism and invincibility of a young man.
This is by far one of the sweetest and more melancholic songs I've ever heard, I absolutely love it.

He sings with such heart, and they play with such soul. Goosebumps.
Hello from Deep East TEXAS. Saw them sing this at the U2 concert in Houston.
Im crying every time i hear this
Charlie boy, don't go to war,
First born in '44
Kennedy made him believe
We could do much more
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
And Lillian, don't hang your head,
Love should make you feel good
In uniform you raised a man,
Who volunteered to stand
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Play the bugle, play the taps
Make your mothers proud
Raise your rifles to the sky, boys
Fire that volley loud
News was bad on Upland Ave.,
Metuchen mourn our loss
Sons rebelled, while fathers yelled,
And mothers clutched the cross
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Play the bugle, play the taps
Make your fathers proud
Raise your rifles to the sky, boys
Fire that volley loud
Alessandra Valle thank you

I love Mumford and gang, but no thanks. IMHO this is one of those perfect songs you just can’t possibly improve upon. Again, just my opinion, but as a diehard Lumineers fan, I’m a bit biased. LOL

October 2018
why can’t i hear the mandolin!!!
Why would you wear a belt and suspenders at the same time ? Don`t they serve the same purpouse?
Angel Dumitru It’s for style
Cóndor pasa sound?
Cudo.
the cello made it better
what instruments are these
Cello, guitar, mandolin
No me sé el contexto de la canción, pero me da tristeza :(
I love this song but the Cello it's sounding sooo loud and it's not a good Cello either, it's not tune well... I'm a cellist and violinist I know what I'm talking about, and the mandolin by the other hand sounds so softly, it's hard to listen!!
But I still love the song
Its a live recording, what do you expect?
sparkdog 494 Yeah
agreed
I have to agree with Harry Young here, Sir, the cello actually helps the song represent the heaviness of the meaning of the lyrics itself.
You got a bad taste in Music 🤷
This song could have definitely done well enough on its own. The clapping was very annoying and took away from this beautiful song
the cello is run through a synthasizer, you make it sound as if or an expert........sorry but u don't know much! that cello makes the song. the mandolin was adjusted after the clapping began. live shows are difficult, n need adjustments.you will notice that when the mandolin was adjusted the camera panned the audience touched up after the video. you have a lot to learn!!!!!!!
Just enjoy
You have a lot to learn about attitude Sir... Just like Joy Hastings said. Just enjoy man...
Tim smoker
You fucking idiot learn to behave
As mude jojo said
;)
either turn the Mando up or pick a little more aggressively...
