@@EscapementWatch I think this is true, as Rolex have put their prices up and Tudor have filled the gap. the Swatch group have changed their prices to pretty much match them.
For me, Longines is less tooley than Tudor. I have a Longines HODINKEE heritage that I love but it feels too nice and refined to be a daily wearer/beater. When I get a bb58 or ranger I intend to wear the shit out of it 😄

I think it’s a natural comparison given the price point. The Longines has better spec but folks will be drawn to Tudor for the Rolex connection and, for the uninitiated, brand prestige compared to Longines. My money would be on the Zulu time but for the money, you’re going right against Tudor and the Pepsi dial

Great video buddy. It's great to see Longines and Tudor being treated as competitors in the same segment. Too many reviewers seem to unfairly either push Longines down or push Tudor up. Quality, distinctive design, finishing and (to some extent) pricing, they compare favourably. With their parent groups they also sit in similar positions as luxury below Omega and Rolex respectively.

Have a IWC 3717 Flieger with AR coating on both sides of the sapphire and over a decade of moderate use the coating does scratch. Sent the watch in for its first service and everything was corrected to original spec including a replacement crystal. I agree it’s better for AR only on the inside of the crystal. Thanks for the review. My Anthracite Zulu Time on the strap is wonderful. However, the date change is slooow, not done till 1:30am. I’d be happy with 12:30! The winding rotor is pretty loud. In 10 days of wearing, it’s only 8 seconds fast. That’s much better than my Rolex Submariner.

I think it's fun to root for Longines in the same way it's fun to root for Tudor. Both are high-potential historic brands with a design focus that are artificially (and a little unfairly) parked underneath other bigger brands (Omega and Rolex). That's why when they have a winner it just feels good. I have a Zulu time coming tomorrow and I'm really excited! Thanks for the review!

Great watch. Very tempting and one of their best. However still struggling with flat shape, longish lugs (some improvement here), male end links, and just a tad too large. Actually an improvement on one or two of the feature I just mentioned may change the size concern all together. The comment that this is best for 7.5" or above wrist is really a deal breaker for most of us.

In these comments there is analogies drawn between Longines and Omega and Tudor and Rolex. The thing is, Tudor is basically discount Rolex but Longines is distinct from Omega in terms of style. I have seen this watch at the AD recently while looking to purchase something else. It really does look great in blue. My only niggle is the bezel that was a 24 click so only whole hours offset can be set. The Tudor GMT (OK it costs quite a bunch more of the hard earned $$) has a 48 click bezel that can accommodate an N-/+ 0.5 hour offset. There are many cities that are not full hours offset. It's a niggle only as I can train my brain to add a half hour but a 48 click would have been the icing on the cake. The date change on your review example seems odd at this price so could be a rogue watch. Most current Omega 3 hand watches also run at 25200 vph that cost a pile more so you might want to steer clear of them if a faster beat rate is a requirement. Personally I can only just tell the difference between 3.5Hz and 4Hz but you can definitely tell a difference side by side. Top side AR coating is a personal thing. The AR coating is not as scratch resistant at sapphire but possibly comparable to hesalite so I guess in general use it'll be more than fine but will show wear with harsher treatment. Another great review FT.

My main feelings after one day of wear.
    Plus points:
Looks great (especially the blue one).
    Decent weight.
    Ceramic bezel.
    True GMT.
    COSC.
    The price point/discountability.
    Good build quality.
    Did I say it’s a stunner?
    Bad points:
    Noisy rotor
    Jangly thin bracelet
    Push pins
24 click bezel (useless for timing things).
Mine seems to start changing date at 10:30pm! And finishes at 12:20am if I manually do it.
I will keep an eye on it tonight in real time.
I don’t see the date change as an issue.
It’s not great but that’s the movement you are paying for (it’s not the most confidence inspiring) and who needs to know the date around midnight?

The bezel having 24 clicks is absolutely key to a GMT watch, its function is to show other time zones so it needs to be restricted to single hours on a 24 hours scale.

      @alfieakaronaldog Рік тому +1

@@PaulJWells Yes, it certainly fits better from an authentically functional point, and although I am not usually into heritage designs, that is a big reason that I like this piece (It combines modern and retro really well IMO).
The Tudor GMT has 48 and I have managed to use that to time lunches, but it’s still a fudge, so as I like to do things properly the Longines has taught me to respect the GMT bezel, and I retract my initial reservation ;)
Another thing I forgot to mention initially was the box and freebie card holder.
The packaging fits the theme of the Watch really well, and the cardholder is blue and actually useful (but I won’t be using it haha)!

I think Longines are better, regardless of Longines usage of ETA movements vs the Tudor in-house movements built for their watches!! ETA and Longines companies are under the same umbrella company, The Swatch Group. Nevertheless The Swatch Group have made a deal between them. ETA produces movements that are proprietary to Longines, some refer to them as in-house movements others collaboration for a better price. True, way better price and also quality production at par!!! Adding to this equation, the materials Longines choose, carefully, in their productions are also quality ranked. Way better construction and better priced!! I have a Spirit Chronograph in blue dial bought it on a bracelet, bought an original brown leather strap and at the moment wearing it with a blue sailcloth Artem Strap, fantastic well made watch, no flaws except the bracelet is with the adjustable pins not withe screws!! Great video!!!

A truly lovely looking piece, and I have managed to road test one recently. Solid build and great design for sure. However, the very 'late' date change is a real bug bear for me, as is the double top AR coating. I have a couple of watches with this and over time they do pick up swirls and minor scratches which spoils the look of the dial. You can understand why Rolex and many others avoid its use. The Tudor BB58 overall has a better quality, bracelet and movement, albeit it's a different type of watch.

Nice review! Surprised you reckoned case milling was sub Tudor? I'd agree Tudor has the edge in bracelets, but movement, case, dial accuracy I'd give to Longines. That line connecting the lume pips is pure watchmaking swagger! And this is a GMT for the price of a Tudor 3 hand. Re AR, I had a Spirit and it scratched easily - sold it when I noticed what was happening. Swirls easily and I'm pretty watch aware. Tudor better here. That said, I wear a watch for outdoor work, but we're talking clothing swirls. I've never scratched a Hardlex doing similar. Omega's AR coating (eg PO) is definitely tougher. Same with eg camera lens coatings - a $200 Tamron ain't the same as a $5k Nikon!

Longines and Tudor are direct competitors in this modern market. The fact is, that due to brute strength of rolex in contemporary times and other combination of factors (hype for vintage designs, success of the black bay, doubling down on black bay variants) Tudor seems more aspirational than longines. Personally I hope longines gets off the leash it has been contained to during Walter von Känels reign and will find more taste-making consumers in all markets and dedicated collectors. Concerning overall success: numbers don’t lie. Longines has been top 3 or 4 for years in Sales. Tudor has not.

I do not consider it an incredible movement like omegas marketing makes it seem. It was an honest experiment that did not work out too well. But the movement was saved by the use of silicone. It improved its accuracy and allowed it to pass metas.
Tudors new movement also passed metas with the help of silicone but it does it with a traditional escapement and both movements have the same limiting factor, modern synthetic oils, so 10-year service. There really is no advantage to the coaxial except it's more complex and runs slower. The coaxial was designed to run without oil and have less friction at 18,000 VPH.

I like the moon watch for what it is and the vintages but not a fan of modern omegas to be honest. I find the co-axial an experiment that didn't work out. It was only saved as a movement because of the Si hair spring which allowed it super powers after its initial teething issues were sorted. Coaxial was originally engineered and designed for no oil no friction and longer service at 18,000vph. Omega speed it up and added oil. That is the limiting factor that all watches have, oil. With modern synthetic oils all movements can go 10 years without any service, rolex, tudor etc. no matter what the service book says. If it says less then 10 years they just want $$$. So there is zero advantage to omega's coaxial. zero. It is not more accurate or faster or longer service intervals. Remember tudor passed metas with their swiss lever. And oris as well if they had the money to pay for the tests would probably pass it easily with their new cal 400 10 year warranty 10 year service swiss lever powered by Silicone.

I noticed the 24 hour hand twitching when jumping the hour. I've seen this before on reviews of this watch, and it's so obvious it should have been fixed by now. The MT5652 behaves perfectly: I've got one (BB GMT) and it's an excellent piece. On that basis, the Tudor movement is superior, although the accuracy of the Longines is impressive. Maybe in a couple of years Longines will have sorted out the movement. I suggest that intending purchasers wait until then, and check this out before buying.

Yes it would be better to compare a Tudor GMT but I do not have one. And personally I would not call ceramic nicer then aluminum. Just my personal preference. Ceramic looks cheap to me and is more likely to crack. While aluminum will be more malleable and will patina nicely.

Wear the watch for 3 months and THEN keep an eye on the date change from midnight on..WHILE WEARING. When you get older and more experienced, you will find ALL manual/automatic watches need a break in period to perform at their BEST. With today's technology, the frequency is a major determinant of energy reserve. High frequency and long reserve requires (given no other trade-offs in the total piece manufacture) more money. There ARE price ranges...LUXURY does not mean "get everything in the world you always wanted and more". That is a childish paradigm.

The big thing Longines suffers from is that their marketing and ad's suck! If you want to play with the Big Boys like Omega, Tudor, you have to pull your watches from basic retail dealers that hang in the mall down the street! No one will associate a "luxury" watch brand that is sold in Macy's or Kay's in the mall. Who wants a watch that to pay for a luxury match that is sitting next to a Seiko and a G-Shock! Its still the reason why some just can't get with Grand Seiko, they don't understand that they are to separate companies! Its the association!!! Like it or not, when we go buy a "High end" watch, the association is a big part of being in the club! You can deny it all you want, but it's true!

    • @EscapementWatch

No not in everyway. The Tudor has a higher beat movement, 28,800vph smooth sweep and with less parts in the escapement should be much more durable as a tool watch then the co-axial's needless complex design. Tudor movements have passed metas mag test as well. If Tudor pays to submits the bb58's movement it probably will pass. But that's just a guess. And don't let the simple case design of the Tudor fool you! I examined them both under extreme magnification and saw imperfections in the brush and polish for the spirit. Of course it is harder to produce a more complex case shape but has nothing to do with finish.

No the silicone can do higher beat easily. Like my bb58 which has a free sprung silicone hairspring at 28,800vph. Swatch lowered the rate for extending the power reserve in most cases.
