@@bhoff19751 And when they were still dead when Beastie Boys came out? Look. I think it was a VH1/record-label affair. You weren't getting in there unless two things: A. You got a personal invite from VH1 execs to attend this thing. B. You know someone at the VH1 or a label and they got you a ticket. These aren't run-of-the-mill Beastie Boys fans on a night out. This crowd is full of record label executives, scouts and their friends and partners, women they are trying to impress etc. It's a more professional-come-social event, rather than a full-blown party night out for fans.
The energy clearly picked up when the boys hit the stage. Puffy and Fab are two of the lowest energy rappers out there. Q-Tip pulled it off while the other two destroyed the energy in the room.
@@bhoff19751 Yeah, P-Diddy was never good. Not sure how he bagged this gig. There would be a million other rappers I would have preferred to see in his place. Q-Tip is phenomenal. His voice is distinct just like the Beastie Boys.
@6:38. That woman is Eazy E's widow (and she just so happened to be sitting next to Afrika Bambaata). Eazy E was also being inducted into the Hall of Fame that night. I think it was just more of her being sad/nostalgic the whole night as opposed to any issue with the performance.
This is from the 3rd VH1s Hip Hop Honors back in 2006. The Hip Hop Honors was an annual event that aired on VH1. It honored old school and golden age hip hop rappers and contributors for their long-term influence and importance in the history of hip hop culture. It featured live performances by most of the honorees along with new school artists who have been influenced by them in tribute. The last show aired in 2017.
The performance by the Beastie Boys themselves is definitely one of their best TV performances IMO. They’re a bit older here but were really on top of their game in terms of performing. That’s 25 years on stage.
That was Eazy E's widow. Eazy was being honored that night as well, so she was there. I think she was just sad the whole night. Nothing to do with the Beastie Boys' performance.
Hip Hop royalty up in the upper tiers there; Ice Cube, RZA, Method Man, Afrika Bambaata, Run of RUN DMC's brother and co-founder of Def Jam Russell Simmons, and many many more
It’s funny that you’re surprised that you’ve never seen that when you’ve never heard any of these songs from any of their platinum albums over 3 decades. Not a knock at all, I was just amused by your surprise at not hearing it. I’m jealous of you man. You’ve only scratched the surface of the Beasties thus far. I’ve been a fan since ‘86 and was lucky enough to see them a bunch of times, but nothing is better than enjoying brilliance the first time.
At 4.26 in the video, Mike D sings I'm like Spoony G, the metro politician, And the camera pans to the real spoony G who's being honoured one of the true original OGs of rap from the late seventies... It's cool to see him here the Beastie Boys homage to him
Thank you thank you for doing this. It might sound silly but I get like emotional sometimes watching this seeing hip hop LEGENDS bump to them. For years some rap fans would scoff that the Beastie Boys and it was nice to see things come full circle. They killed the performance. (Btw. I’ve seen many of the hip hop honors and I think they mix down the crowd and mix the performers really well cause some performances you’ll hear the crowd mysteriously cut out. There’s parts here you can hear them ‘quietly’ shouting)
@@TeezMcGee for sure. Music has generally been present in my life all waking hours for the majority of my life. Having been a musician myself, there’s not much else that effects me as much as music does. Just don’t know why Beastie Boys became such an analog for my life. I think it’s because they started raucous and grew up, accepted their shortcomings and tried to bring peace and healing (all the while banging out hits like mad). Been really happy to see you get into other genres including music by my other favorite group *drum roll* The BeeGees as well. Lol. It’s fun seeing someone appreciate so many genres instead of pigeon holing themselves into one type of music. Music is everything to me. Trying to pass my love for music (and my instruments) on to my kids. I know your baby gonna be lucky to have a dad that can share a large musical palette
It's so funny that you are reacting to this. I first saw this about a week or 2 ago. I was suprised to see how much Beastie upstaged P.Diddy, Q-Tip, Fabolous (in my opinion). Though, to be fair, it's hard to cover a group that is literally coming on after you. But it did show it's a bit hard to mimic the Beastie Boys' style.
This is fire 🔥!!! Wish I could have been in the audience. I saw the Beastie Boys in concert in 2004 and they were amazing. 👍 Brings back good memories.
That’s something I’ve yet to see another group do, is so efficiently sing their song with a different popular song playing overtop that’s matched up and not for even one second lose where they are in it...you should check out their Glasgow concert
Finally someone seeing who was there giving props to the Beasties. That’s the most powerful aspect of this performance, IMHO. These guys had props from the other hip hop greats and fathers of the genre.
This is nice to see because, I've been a B-Boys fan since 87 and I gotta say, all my black friends always dissed the Beasties and never gave the any respect.
Good stuff! WOW!! Let yourself go that is the tempo!! Teez, you should do reactions to the Beat Box series. Crazy what they do with their voices and the loops!💙💙🙌🙌
Check out Beastie Boys covering Run DMC on the VH1 Hip Hop Honors for Run DMC. I’ve watched that video literally HUNDREDS of times... it’s so damn good. The one you’re watching is the Hip Hop Honors for Beastie Boys.
You should check out the Beastie Boys tribute to Run DMC and Jam Master Jay(RIP) "Sucka MCs"
Great suggestion; I love that video; they nailed it!
When Dougie Fresh comes out? Crazy!
That crowd was so dead, they had no clue. But you see the OGs was wit it.
The crowd was dead because the rapper's energy was dead. Trash cover.

That brings a tear to my eye. To see so much love from the hip hop aristocracy for the Beasties makes me feel like there is hope in the world.

The artists themselves know. You saw Ice Cube, and 50 Cent there, and of course Diddy and Q Tip on stage. The real players know.

The greatness of Beastie Boys: the rhymes are so memorable that they can switch out the beats in a live setting and you can still follow.
You have GOT to watch their movie "awesome I fucking shot that" its a concert film and you will love it
