Yeah, he was just too brilliant to succeed people like him to van Gogh but I also include Chet Baker and James Dean although more van Gogh he was just too bright of a star to be appreciated. He came out of nowhere and left like a blinding flash, but oh the music he left.
Was the first Nick Drake song I ever heard, probably 15-20 years ago. I had jotted the title down on a small scrap of paper, lost it.... Out of the blue this tiny paper appeared in my box of stuff, and I went straight to UA-cam to listen. My goodness!! This is captivating!
The whole album is fantastic, but this song in particular. I can sit reading a good book in front of the fire with a good cup of coffee and this album playing in the background and the am in my happy place, especially when my dogs sat next to me 😊
No live appearances of Nick, because he was too shy. One of my favourite albums of all time. John Martyn was one of his friends and I believe he went to university with Chris De Burg. A light that was too bright for this world RIP
It ends the album, from the opening track, Hazy Jane 1, Hazy Jane 2, to Northern Sky, you have just experienced a journey only interupted by having to turn the record over half way through.
He was probably discovered by more people due to his songs being used in a couple of commercials - Pink Moon for a Volkswagen commercial and more recently From the Morning for AT&T. Suffered from depression and OD'd on antidepressants - never sure if was suicide or accindental. Didnt perform much, and i read on at least one occasion performed with his back to the Audience. I think he is somewhst similar to Gram Parsons - troubled souls, with some real talent who died young and both had more influence than records sold
The VW commercial is exactly how I was exposed to him the first time. Immediately sought out who it was, got the album and brought it home to play it. It was such a fast 30 minutes. My roommate at the time had been listening with me and I asked if he minded if I played it again and he said he'd hoped I would. He became a fan that day and then I got the boxed set for my dad for Xmas that year and he became a fan. Such wonderful music all around.
Makes you have memories that aren’t even yours ✌🏻
I don’t know how anyone can dislike this song. It’s just heavenly. Nick is amazing.
They must be southerners

He was an amazing guitar player as you’ll hear on album tracks.

Only 3 albums, they're all golden, for my money "5 leaves left" is a masterpiece of an album, but they're all great.
3 albums, 3 damn mastepieces. Just pure art and genius. I'm very old and that guy is my hero since 1972.
The Nick Drake rabbit hole
Nice and mellow ☮️💜🎶
