Okay; here are the B-52's performing one of My All time Faves of theirs, "Planet Claire", from ITV's "Get Fresh" filmed in Plymouth, UK, July 11,1987. Looking very much like an Official Music Video, this was done on a British Children's TV show. This is an Absolute Classic! Fun on the Run!
Jonah
You know who sounds like the B52’s ? NO ONE !
"Some say she's from Mars
Or one of the seven stars
That shine after 3:30 in the morning
WELL SHE ISN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Truly, words to live by.
From their 1979 debut album. Love the Peter Gunn intro.
"Mystery Men" forever made this "The Spleen's" theme song. "Hiyah feellath! Word on the thtreet isth your lookin' for thuperheroeth!"
52 Girls, Rock Lobster, Give Me Back My Man, Strobe Light and Private Idaho are all great songs by them.
Agreed, great list...but for me this one & Rock Lobster has an extra dimension...
The B52s were all about fun.
B-52s were the best. Fun eclectic party music. Let's not forget "52 Girls" and "Private Idaho"
No B 52's are one of my favorite bands of all time. Give Me Back My Man, Private Idaho, they're so talented and perfect. They (arguably) invented the psychobilly genre of music.
Hmmmmm...not so sure as there are clear originators from the 1960's (eg Sonics, Novas etc), 1970s (eg The Cramps) and the early 80's (egThe Meteors, Guanabatz). The B52's are pretty much their own thing :)
The B-52's - Planet Claire - 1979
It was originally recorded in 1978, then re-recorded and released in July 1979.
This Band are in my Top 5 of all time.
They are serious fun and the epitome of quirky.
I first saw them in June 1980 in Sydney, at The Capitol Theatre, they played tracks from their 2nd album WILD PLANET.
They played " ROCK LOBSTER " LIVE on COUNTDOWN, it was crazy when Fred crumpled to the floor when the lyrics said " Down, Down " and his hat went skewiff.
This band bring joy into my heart n soul.
The 2nd time I saw them was in 2004 at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney.
My highlight of that gig was " QUICHE LORRAINE "
I recommend that people listen to " 53 Miles West of Venus " from WILD PLANET, it is a great Rock tune.
RIP - Ricky Wilson
My favorite from the B-52s is "dance this mess around" they have a couple good liver versions too.
I like their spleen versions too
"Are all B-52s songs catchy?" YES. These guys have always been the kings and queens of kitschy and catchy. They are also an incredible live band. I lost track of how many times I got to see them perform back in the day, but it was always a giant party. Funny you mentioned you wouldn't have known there was a vocal layered onto that intro if you hadn't seen it. I was listening to this song for years before I went to my first Bs concert and it never hit me until I saw it and heard it live. Those girls have incredible voices. They were so powerful live, I remember feeling their voices vibrating in my soul! 🥴 An amazing live performance from them is Big Bird filmed in Germany, possibly 82 or 83. It's a must see.
They should be in the RnR HoF
The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.
ROCK LOBSTER
The best way to describe this band is that they are sublime in their weirdness. That's what sets them apart from other bands. Give Rock Lobster a listen to learn what I'm saying.
Then listen to Private Idaho for more fun and Deadbeat Club for a great straightforward tune. You won't be disappointed.
They are from Athens, Georgia (as is REM) and a fantastic band called Pylon.
They really do have Tunes that stick in Yer' head like "Rock Lobster" & "Mesopotamia"‼️🎼🎶🎵🎸🎤🤘
Don't forget "Private Idaho", "Quiche Lorraine" (one of the oddest and funnest songs ever!), and "Give Me Back My Man"!
This is my most fave B52 track from the early 80's, everyone was switched onto Rock Lobster (which is great) but this is the one for me!
Me too - it was my theme song!
Ditto
The B-52's - Planet Claire - 1979
It was originally recorded in 1978, then re-recorded and released in July 1979.
This Band are in my Top 5 of all time.
Oh yes me too. Great track. Pls stop talking through it...can you save it to the end?
I started listening to B52s in 1979. My favourite band of all time!
Dance This Mess Around… great tune by the B52’s
I'm always intrigued by how 80s music always brings out 80s dance moves in people, even if they're much too young to have been there. I dig it!
There will never be any one like them.. One of a kind in a Great Way
I saw them during their heyday two or three times. They were probably the most fun concerts I've ever been to. Basically a giant dance party.
Fun fact
The song is about a old lady Beauty parlor ( hair salon ) near where they lived in Athens Georgia when they first became a band
The place was called Clair’s beauty parlor where older Southern women would go and get their hair done
This was in the late 70s but the elderly would still get their hair styled in early 60s hair dues like giant buffonts and a hair style call the B52
Hence the name of the song and band
The song was called planet Clair because these old ladies looked like they came from outer space with their completely out of outdated hair
The line " No one ever dies there No one has a head" come from the fact the salon still had those old hair dryers that nearly covered their head as they sat underneath them and the fact the women were very elderly they joked Clair’s old style hair dryers kept the women alive by some secret aliens rejuvenation process 😂
Saw them in a huge festival called Hear Wave in Toronto in the early 80s, fun fun fun. Also saw Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Pretenders and a bunch of other new wave acts, awesome show.
I was 17 in Utica New York . The B-52 s performed at the Stanley Theater. I was front row center with friends. Made out with a girl in a Mohawk and green sequin dress. Danced all night. Best concert of my youth. 1984.
With the battle going on between rock vs. disco in 1978, the B52s came to the scene.
When this song was popular on the radio and that transistor beep started in the club, there was a rush to the dance floor. Every guy was trying out that Fred Schneider dance. Good times!
My daughter, born in 1991, had a favorite song by Lorena McKenett (spelling?) called THE MUMMERS DANCE. BUT... she also had a favorite band, and it was THE B-52's. Her first concert at age 5 included Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult, Pat Travers, and more. Just before she was born, I took her mother to see AC/DC in Sacramento California. She swore the baby was kicking to the beat of the music! As a child, while driving around in her car seat, with the VERY FIRST NOTE coming out of the car stereo, she would recognize an AC/DC song and start nodding her head and waving her arms around! A Head Banging Concert hound to this day! Yet it is the B-52's that still light up her eyes when she hears them!
Love the B-52's!! So much fun.
After Jim Morrison died, the singer (Fred something) tried out for the Doors. Can you imagine it? Riders of the storm, an earlobe fell in the deep!!
Great reaction! The B-52's have some incredible rocking songs that tend to get overlooked.. "Devil In My Car" is outstanding.. "There's a Moon In the Sky" is super cosmic, and "52 Girls" and "Give Me Back My Man" are classic jammers..
Love Shack is from an entirely different era of the B-52's. This video and song is early B-52's when Ricky Wilson was still alive and their sound was part new wave, part performance art, zero mainstream pop.
You two are the first people that I know that really get this song and I think that is awesome. Have you been to planet Claire?
A bunch of art students from Georgia....LOVE their quirkiness! i also love that people in Planet Clare drive a Plymouth Satellite....So funny!
Kate is doing a 50s sci-fi theremin with her voice. It is really impressive.
they were a great party band. and they are going on tour for the final time. ;)
Back in the day the B52's filled the dance floor - best of the new wave movement
So glad The Wolf Hunterz made it to Planet Claire. The party starts there.
After the party, take a cruise down Dirty Back Road.
I love this song. It's sick when it drops. 👂
you will LOVE Private Idaho guaranteed
Reminds me of playing Spy Hunter at the arcade 35 years ago.
This!!♥️ Another bizarre but loveable tune of theirs was Butter Bean! So silly but you sing it ALL DAY after hearing it lol Any song off Whammy to be honest!
They are amazing live! So happy this was suggested to you guys, made my day!!😄
B 52's - Give Me Back My Man. Great Kate Pierson - Ramones, in the early 1980s on the song Chop Suey with Cindy Wilson and Debbie Harry, - Iggy Pop, on the top 20 song Candy in 1990 - and R.E.M., on the songs Shiny Happy People, Country Feedback and Me in Honey on the in 1991.
The answer is YES. ALL B-52s music will get stuck in your head. Gotta do Rock Lobster for sure, it's off the same album.
The B52's are old school. Remember going to the beach rocking out to them. Fun times.
Ricky Helton Wilson
A genius who played the guitar with four strings, tuning his strings in the form of an open chord.
My regards and respects to Rick !!!
So glad you found this clip, awesome!!!
what a great band. love the fact that the host have an open mind.
I first heard the B52s in 1979, and every song I've heard since then has burned itself into my head. Give Me Back My Man is awesome too
B-52's have always been great.
There's a moon in the sky ---- it's called the moon! Love the B52s!
I still remember (well sort of) going to see Laserium at Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles in the late 70's and this was one fo the songs they used during the show!
Getting epically baked and listing to this album in high school, great times
Try "Dance this mess around", "Private idaho", or "Roam". I saw them at West Point Mil academy in 83/84.....they give all this energy and more!
I love watching these reactions, seeing the joy in buddy's (sorry don't know his name) face while he's watching these videos is great. You have to check out the Live version of Rock Lobster next.
Now that they've sucked you in, please do "Roam". Probably their biggest commercial hit. Video is awesome too!
This was filmed on my Citys seafront in 81 i believe, for a saturday morning childrens show. And i missed it, as i was still in school, with expanding musical tastes at the time.
I did make up for in the 90s though, when i seen them live at Hammersmith Odeon :) :)
Rock lobster next please. Keep it up guys. Love your videos.
"52 girls" is a great song too 🙂
first time hearing this LP in 79, I was blown away. GENIUS
One of their best and they have many great songs!
You have to appreciate the B-52s for their own style: unique, experimental, fun, campy.
This song is out of this world!
I remember when this came out I was was a freshman in high school it blew everybody’s mind
I mean who else used a smoke alarm as a musical instrument? They were and are immortal.
Actually it's not a smoke alarm, it's a walkie talkie. Or, as I prefer to call it in this particular instance, an Interplanetary Communication Device.
If u like more of this! Just listen to B52s Downtown Club, Atlanta 1978 - UA-cam
Now you are ready for "Rock lobster" :-)
OMG this song get me 40 years back when I was in a school dance and we made a dance on this song !!!!
Sorry I have not video because that was a time when internet and youtube didn't exist lol :)
But thank you for your fun, if you want to see and hear another crazy song I was dancing on, you can find Yellow "the race" :)
The B52s are legendary!!!!
These guys are fun to see live.
Oh dang, y'all...I can remember bringing this brand new lp home...the whole album is so good! You will love ROCK LOBSTER!
I was in West Berlin when they were the first time in Europe and in Germany. There was no time and no money to go into this concert. And now, I'm really sad that I don't try to get in there. Normally the controls wasn't there after the band was nearly at the end of the show.
I really still love the songs of this band of this time and I heard it a lot too in my favorite Rock discothecs.
So cool to see this masterpiece covered by your channel !
Yes their tunes are all catchy and fun. For the treat of a lifetime: there was a version of them doing this song on Saturday Night Live. Seriously it is worth trying to find it. Good 1
So interesting. This is the album version that someone put over the version that belongs to the video... No matter what version, they're all great
This is amazing to see again !!!!!!!!!
The real question: Did Cindy ever put a live bird inside of her birdcage hair?
"Rock Lobster" and "Give Me Back My Man"
Loved it! My Own Private Idaho is just as fun.
The B-52's - the name refers to the hairstyle (beehive) and not to any cocktail or any long range bomber - are a very serious band and they are very serious musicians
but they don't take themselfs too seriously! Remember allways that it is hard work to look and act intentionally funny and ridiculous.
They were trendsetter with their danceable mixture of New Wave, Punk and Art Rock and they allways killed it!
They were so cool, their music went straight to your legs and you had to dance (even today!!)!
I can't believe you are experiencing this band without having experienced"Rock Lobster".
Mind blown about how much your minds might be blown!!
( Did you notice that the guitarist plays without some of the strings- he only used 4, or 3? I can't remember.)
The b52’s songs were so catchy I still have a skit they did when I was 7 from love shack stuck in my head and I’m now 34 lol
Rock Lobster!
I can get down with that vibe
Surprised no one has mentioned Roam - the girls can sing!
This and Rock Lobster were party favourites. Really alternative but loved them
Rock Lobster stays in your head forever
Great band. The “hook” in this tune is a faster version of the Peter Gunn theme, I think by Henry Mancini.
I remember the “NEW WAVE” beat from early 1980’s where I first heard the B-52’s and The Romantics, The Split Endz and early U2!!! The singles bar back east I was treated to, the kids all dressed up in styles like the B52’s!!!!! Check B52’s song Private Idaho!!!!👍🏻
B-52's = Pure fun, pure entertainment.
Please listen to their songs Private Idaho, dance this mess around, and give me back my man!!! So fun!! But I think you guys would also appreciate their song hero worship. Might surprise you lol
Had an old acquaintance who referred to The B-52's (and other bands of the era) as "80s Pyschopathedelia" :-) kerk
This video is proof of Aliens. Also proves that Aliens just want to get down and make music. Very cool...Very groovy!
This is from the 70’s or VERY early 80’s. Timeless
Rock Lobster, Give Me Back My Man, Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can, Mesopotamia & Roam! And even though you already reacted to Love Shack, you should watch the official music video of it. It's great!!!
A night of pure funnnnn. Is if
The B52's and The Talking Heads toured together.. now that would be fun
He did the walkie and she did that voice live
You would love their song CAKE on the Mesopotamia album. Super funky and chunky with amazing vocals by the women.
Some of the very best and catchy guitar riffs! Be sure to do Rock Lobster.
ya gotta try "Monster in my pants" by Fred Schnider and the shake society...aka the B52's..its a must! LOL
fun fact b-52s made a cameo in the 90s flinstones movie
The B-52s are representative of the "Athens sound". In the late 70s and early 80s Athens, Georgia (where UGA) is located, was the CENTER of all college music in the country. R.E.M. is another band from Athens. The B-52s first hit was "Rock Lobster", which was instrumental in reinvigorating John Lennon to get back to writing music, and the music video is also fun like "Planet Claire". Also look at "My Private Idaho".
