I wish that the powers that be would realize that big muscles don't automatically make great wrestlers. Vince's infatuation with body builders is out of control. It keeps getting more about image and less about talent.
Vince and his "cartoon" era, was the beginning of the end. Once the territories went away, wrestling as some of us older fans knew it, went away. Now it's just 6 or 7 minutes of two guys almost dancing in the ring. Can you imagine watching Mr. Wrestling 2, grinding away on a leg or an arm, for 10 minutes, or Dick Murdoch and Killer Karl Kox, beating the hell out of each other for 15-20 minutes, in today's wrestling? Or watching Flair and Steamboat matching moves for an hour? Jack Brisco stretching somebody out on the mat, or Harley race going toe-to-toe with ANYBODY, or Dusty Rhodes taking on the Four Horsemen, Stan Hanson and Bruiser Brody running through EVERYBODY, or the gory chaos of Abdullah the Butcher? We'll never see wrestling like THAT again.
Thanks for mentioning that time the way that you did. Very cool, because my Great Grandma "who is now dead" used to watch Dusty Rhodes,Flair, Ricky Steamboat matches with me, when I was little. So I remember.

My gosh, Magnum TA was such a talent. Who knows how big he would have gotten if not for the accident. It is so sad that his career came to an end but I am happy to see that it did not kill his spirit. Also, JJ Dillon has always been a class act and Tully really turned his life around. Much respect to each of these guys who gave so much to entertain us in the best years of the business.
JJ really showed his emotions and Tully had nothing but respect for Magnum. That it the true mark of a champion, which Magnum would have been.
That's such a true story. Sad story. Heartbreaking to hear the emotion of everyone and knowing today these people don't have that. They don't seem to bond like they used to

Magnum is easily one of my all time favorites- the master of the belly to belly suplex. I don’t think there is anything better than mid 80s Jim Crockett promotions in terms of talent, psychology, and fans. It really was the fastest hour on television. Magnum, Nikita, Dusty, and the Horsemen were icons.

Totally changed NWA. His accident really changed the whole dynamic of that organization. He would have been a great champion.

Jonathan Turbide but imagine if Magnum would have face Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior at the time, Magnum will not be midcarder if WWE is very interested in him
McMahon would've BURIED Magnum T.A. The only guy who from 1984-1989 rivaled Hogan in popularity at any time, even if it was more regional in scope. From late 1985 until his accident, Magnum was 1a to Hogan as the top babyface in the world. Given McMahon's history with handling NWA talent, I can't see either Magnum or Sting getting the same level of push they would have in the NWA/WCW.
Without question. Short and long term. No one has ever actually verified it, but I'm pretty sure Magnum was going to beat Flair at Starcade '86. Then suddenly, you have Nikita vs. Flair, where Flair is being essentially cheered as the face. Just not the same caliber of main event match. And the repercussions for 1987 were that Flair really didn't have a top shelf babyface with heat to chase him...hell, that's why he ended up dropping the belt to RON GARVIN to get a break, only to win it back at Starcade '87. People say JCP would've been doomed to fail either way, and perhaps that's true. I think they stood a much better chance of sustaining themselves with another top guy in the fold...especially with the heat Magnum T.A. had. Imagine if Hogan's career ends at the end of 1986...we don't have Hogan/Andre at WM III...the whole dynamic of that period for the WWF changes. I don't know of wrestling fans grasp how big a loss that was for the Crockett's.

I met Terry at Michaels in Virginia Beach when I was in the Navy at Norfolk. Terry was a good person. He had my ship, USS Josephus Daniels CG27, front row seats to watch him vs Flair in a steel cage match. The day of his accident is the day I got out of the Navy, Oct 14, 1986. May 1988 I had brain surgery from injuries in the Navy. I live off a VA Disability Pension and just wish Terry would know how much he has inspired me to keep fighting. Yesterday I found out that I have to go to Pittsburgh VAMC for testing because they think I have Parkinson's Disease. Just another battle I have to go through with God's help.

Tully and Magnum had legit heat and I am glad there wasn't a rekindling of the flames of hatred here.
Had to have been a bit weird...even all these years later...that Tully "losing" his then-wife to Terry Allen. But, Tully ended up buying a house next door to them just so he could continue to be in his children's life....now That's a Dad

To see Magnum and Tully sitting even 5 feet from each other,,with obvious peace in their hearts, is simply awesome and amazing to me. The love and respect is not of this world......I love you both Terry and Tully!! God Bless you both!!
@rocketHtown And therein lies the difference between the character and the reality. Before watching this video, I was watching a shoot interview with announcer Tony Schiavone where he talks about when he was first brought on as the announcer and he walks into the Jim Crockett Promotions office and sees rival wrestlers sitting and talking like the best of friends. They are not rivals. They are actors.
Considering that makes it easier to understand the face turn that happened after Magnum's accident, where Nikita Koloff was now all of a sudden Dusty Rhodes' partner in tribute to Magnum, an example of the creativity that Rhodes often showed as a booker.

JJ is such a classy individual. You can see how this affected not just each person's professional life. It also greatly impacted wrestling because Terry was on the fast track to the NWA heavy weight championship that I believe he would have held for a very long time. who knows what that would have meant for Flair, Rhoades, Race and so many others.
Met Terry many times. Such a great man. Nothing but love and respect for him.
I have heard nothing but good things about Terry Allen, in and out of the ring. He was very well respected by his peers and loved by the fans.
I hope that Magnum and Tully had a chance to sit down talk, air their differences and heal. Terry was nothing less than awesome both inside and outside the ring. God bless all these men for who they are and the joy they've brought to us the fans.

Magnum TA was one of my favorites..that belly to belly finisher was golden ..
These guys loved each other so much. I know they worked like enemies in the ring but outside for the most part they were family. I am much older now so I am able to hear stories from these great wrestlers and appropriate all of the hard work that went into making a show the greatest show on earth. . . Watching the 70's and 80's NWA was like watching 70's KISS in concert. . .

Magnum's accident changed wrestling forever. I wonder to this day how wrestling would've been different if TA hadn't had the accident and David Von Erich hadn't died in Japan in '84. I truly believe wrestling would look entirely different today if just those two things didn't happen.

Tully Blanchard one of my wrestling heros. Along with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson,The Rock,Ricky Steamboat, Greg Valentine,Austin Idol,Tommy Rich,etc.
Magnum had a bright future him and Nika had some great battles in the 80's.Unlike todays wrestling they had no stupid scripts to read...I loved to watch this guy and it was so sad to see his carrer end in such a tragic way.
I remember Magnum TA briefly in the 80's but I did my research on him and I was impressed with the work he did and unfortunately cause of his his accident his career was cut short but if him and Dusty and the rest of the ole NWA crew could have work though that time the sky was the limit for Magnum and The rest of the crew

I remember the very next NWA wrestling tv showing right after Magnum TA's car accident they opened up the show with The Four Horsemen following Dusty Rhodes in a car into a parking lot just b4 they jumped him, me being a kid I totally thought it was a work eluding to what had happened to Magnum...was too young to separate the storylines from real life..
Magnum TA had all the potential in the world and was on path to win the NWA World title..
Very wise words from Magnum, TA. It is hard to believe that it was almost 30 years to the day that he had that terrible accident. Magnum was on fire and had Flair's number, and then an error in judgement cost him everything!

Does anyone remember the dairy Queen at Clairmont and Buford Hwy? Its now a Mexican restaurant. In about 85 I was 10 and went there for ice cream, was like a window counter and lady behind counter said Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA just left and you could feel the buzz in the air. Damn I hate I missed them that night but Atl was their playground. No other city has the wrestling history of Atl.
I have the up Most respect for everyone of these great legends.
Don't know if Magnum TA is in the HOF or not but he most surly deserves to be. Before his misfortune, he was being primed to be the World champion.
There will never be anything like 80s wrestling ever again. You had at least 4 major top promotions with incredible talent: the NWA (which later became WCW) with the Four Horsemen; Ole & Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Rick Flair, James J. Dillon as manager, Magnum TA, Rick Steamboat, Manny Fernandez, Dusty Rhodes............. Then there was World Class Championship Wrestling with the Von Erichs, The Freebirds, Geno Hernandez, Chris Adams, Eric Embry, Skandor Akbar............ The Universal Wrestling Federation with Ted Dibiase, Jim Duggan, One Man Gang, The Missing Link......... The AWA with Kevin Suyllivan, The Purple Haze, Buddyy Rose, Austin Idol........ And then of course the WWF now WWE. With all these promotions competing for viewers, the wrestlers gave their best to entertain people. The WWE today has fallen flat with no real competition to force them to step up their game.
Yes Jim Crockett did have those financial problems. It's ashame they did, because they had such a great product. Hands down better wrestlers. Going to see them live over WWF was like night and day. There was more excitement in the Philly Civic Center than the Spectrum. I really miss the territories. Young people today who follow wrestling don't have a clue what they are missing out on. Thank God for UA-cam.
I remember the territory days back in the 70's and 80's.
I'm from Montreal and there were some very good wrestlers around that area. When the WWE first started coming to Montreal in the early 80's they were still known as the WWF.
They challenged some local wrestlers to put together a tag team to wrestle the tag champs at the time who were the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff.
Dino Bravo and King Tonga( Meng from wwe). were teamed up.
The event happened at the old Montreal Forum. There was almost 30,000 in attendance. Standing room only as Bravo and Tonga beat the Sheik and Volkoff in about 10 minutes.
The place just erupted in cheer. I still remember it to this day almost 40 years later. I was there with my friend and we still talk about it to this day.
What a great time in wrestling that was.

Tom Stewart Crockett's money issues were due to hid trying to expand nationally faster than Vince & WWE. Vince mostly stayed in his core areas, territory if you will, and only occassionally ran shows in other areas. This made his shows in other territories seem like special events, and of course they were stacked cards. The rest of the time Vince worked on getting as much of his TV in these areas as he could to keep his visibility up.
Crockett had success getting his syndicated shows run around the country and had a huge exposure advantage over WWE thanks to TBS and their Sat Night show. Crockett wanted to expand his touring business to make stops in WWE areas & AWA areas regular parts of his tours, stopping every month or every other month. This meant massive increases in travel expenses, increases WWE didnt take on concentrating on PA, NJ, CT, NY for most of their touring (as opposed to Crockett who was expanding fast out of his core NC, SC, GA, KY, WVA, Tenn, Miss strengths to run shows throughout the west coast and into the North West & North East).
Crockett hadnt mastered the auxillary income streams that Vince had with action figures, etc. In fact, Crockett foolishly allowed the AWA to market toys based on The Road Warriors, Jimmy Garvin, & Ric Flair when all were major stars on his program! The inability to maximize these extra income streams combined with the massive touring expense increase (and the natural leveling off of attendance in these new areas once trips became regular & frequent) created serious cash flow issues even as TV ratings & overall attendance were extremely high in 86-87. The final money issue was Crockett's insistence at buying all of the assetts of the failed UWF, a very popular but not profitable niche promotion associated with Bill Watts. Initially Crockett was content to "co promote" with them but this was just a way to get his larger audience nationwide familiar with the group. Crockett wanted all of their wrestlers (or virtually all) plus all the independent syndicated TV slots they had nationwide. Unfortunately the UWF owed a lot of money to TV stations & other creditors which Crockett inherited when he bought the company. Crockett already had ample TV exposure in most of the areas the UWF did anyway, which lessened the impact of the TV deals. Add to that the massive payroll increase (all those wrestlers have to get paid) and this deal dealt a huge blow to Crockett, massive debt with little return. Compare that 25 years later to Vince buying WCW, Vince only purchased the video library of the company & nothing else, no buildings or physical property, no existing contracts for any promotional entities, and no wrestler contracts. None of the debt or existing contracts were then inherited (no debt) and the financial return on re marketing the video library far outpaced the initial purchase price. As for wrestlers, Vince made offers for new deals with limited buyouts to talent he was interested in and ignored the rest. Crockett could have done something similar, signing the handfull of talent from the UWF roster that could be useful like Steve Williams & The Freebirds and let the others pursue deals with WWE or AWA, knowing some of them likely would be available anyway, while cherry picking TV contracts in areas where he didnt have significant exposure, spending a lot less money with more potential return. Crockett's UWF deal was essentially the final straw that broke his back.
I doubt Magnum alone would have stemmed that tide. For one, not long after Magnum left Lex Luger came along, soon followed by Sting, so hugely popular young stars were not an issue. Magnum did look like he was on pace for special things, that he would have supplanted the ageing Dusty Rhodes as the defacto #1 hero and shared top draw with Flair. A World Title run almost seemed a foregone conclusion and he could have easily had the career arc Sting had for instance.

Magnum TA really should have been so much more. But part of what made him great was having such an excelelent heel in Tully to work with. Tully could put on a college course on how to be a great heel.

I miss the old NWA days of the 80's all the big stars that went to the WWF and hit the big time came through the NWA or Georgia championship wrestling.
I remember their matches, that "I Quit" match at Starcade was brutal. This was in the kayfabe days where you certainly never said anything about matches being booked or that heels and faces could really like each other. And then, in one of his televised interviews hyping some match, Tully looked right at the camera and said, "Magnum, it would do my heart good to see you in the ring again," and for pre-teen me, that was huge.

I remember reading about his accident in 'the Wrestler' magazine when I was a teen. What a loss for the business and certainly for Mr. Allen.
Was never a big Magnum fan , I felt that others had to lead him along . Maybe one day he could have developed into that championship guy but every person he was in the ring with was better but he sure carries a great message

Magnum had the look and athleticism. He definitely learned a lot from working with more experienced heels but he was a good worker in his own right and way over with fans. I think if he had been given an NWA title run he would have really blossomed.
They didn't carry him along. They took him under their wing and build him up. He would not have been the star with out the horsemen and Dusty . That was their job and they did a great job.

I wonder why WCW didn't keep Mag in the loop announcing? I guess maybe because of his construction business? There is life outside of wrestling yes, but it sure would have been good to see him still around. Thank GOD that he is still around after that horrific accident. GOD IS GOOD
Magnum had everything! The look, the charisma, the mic skills, the wrestling ability, the realism, the body. He literally had it all.
If I were granted three wishes, one of them would be that Magnum TA and Brock Lesnar would switch places or more precisely switch futures. Magnum TA defeats Ric Flair and wins the NWA World Championship and Brock Lesnar ends up in the car accident that forces him out of wrestling before his undeserved title match with The Rock at Summerslam.

The push that Vince McMahon did to take over all of wrestling really started after this accident. At this point as a kid, even with the popularity of the old WWF with Hogan, I always loved the NWA more. They were pretty much neck and neck in popularity at the time I think.

Oh yeah, Magnum was definitely headed to the top. He was already great but with an NWA title run there is no telling what heights he could have reached.

A vehicle is very dangerous and we all just don't realize it because it's been a part of our daily lives! My best freind was killed in a car accident after our Sophomore year in high school! A good freind I've known my entire life is now paralyzed after a recent car accident at age 25! If they don't kill you they mame you for life!! Just be careful on the road!! ✝
It's weird how things can go. Magnum had a car accident and never set foot in the ring again. Tic Flair had a plane crash, broke his neck and was back in six months. A woman I go to church with fell in her house and is paralyzed from the neck down. A Canadian man I know who was in the Canadian Army got dropped 25 feet out of a helicopter, and is still alive and can still walk. Go figure.
I guarantee you if Magnum hadn't had his accident he would have shot straight to the top and the NWA would have never folded to the WWF
When I first heard Magnum got into an accident I thought it was a work. It wasn't until several weeks later that this was the real deal.

I don't care what anyone else says. In my opinion. And this is something that I've always said since his accident. That Magnum T.A. is without question the absolute greatest United States Champion there has or ever will be. Granted there have been some dame good ones including Tully. But Magnum had a passion for that title like no other champion ever has or will. That title meant everything to him. And I also think and very very strongly feel. That he is by far the best wrestler there has or ever will be. That never held the world title. I'm honored to have him as a friend on facebook. Magnum T.A. damn sure should be in the hall of fame. Considering what he accomplished with that title. Magnum you are not only an inspiration to thousands. But you are a true legend of the sport and world of wrestling
