- Its done!!!
The synth is up and running! after 3 weeks of chaos and many more of evading the task, I finally have the layout I always wanted... time for a quick recap! I'll take you through the steps of how I approached the eurorack design of my monstersynth in this final vlog entry of my build series.
if you're interested in the layout and have a look at the guts of this gargantuan thing, follow these links!

so you built the biggest *semi-modular* ever :D
Oooooof
@@ColinBenders so when do we get to hear it?
@@John_Thompson ha ha
@@John_Thompson With any luck !
@@johnnyabatrossy damn the negativity you radiate...
Impressive, would have been nice to hear something coming out of this ...
know why he wont play it because its a CGI fake
it's gonna be something like GLGLGLGLGLGBZZZZZZBOINK
I get the feeling that the point has very little to do with utility or musicality.
Literally almost everyone of his other videos is playing it why would u watch one of the few vlogs meant to explain it and complain instead of watching one of the many performances
spends 60K+ on a synth
doesn't buy a $20 screwdriver set ;)
glad you got there in the end, the system looks amazing
Wowza! ... It looks very well thought out, I can only imagine this has been brewing in Colin's head for a couple of years or more... A dream come true!
It's great to see it in its full glory 💖...Can't wait to hear the beginning of a new phase in Colin's journey,
🎛️ 👽🎚️🎛️ 🦖 🎛️🎚️🤖 🎛️ 👌😍... 🤯
Have. To twist. Knobs. Twist them. Twisty knobs. Every. One. So. Good.
I’m so happy for you Colin 🤍. can’t wait to see and hear it in real life!
Happy? He'll never be happy though. He's totally addicted to Eurocrack. It never ends believe me. I'm a recovering addict 😂🤣😂😋
This was such a great series of videos. Thank you for doing it, and now I'm going to tear down my system and try to follow your approach again.
Congratulations, Mr. Benders. You already love your system (mentioned it as 'my instrument'), so you did it right. I like to see that you finally ended up with a system, that is - in my opinion - well organized.
It seems you picked up some ideas of my comments to your first video about this process, like dedicated islands of functionality, dedicated interfaces (ins and outs) , "fixed" patched areas as anchors of trusty functionality and results you can rely on and a master-idea for the rules of usability.
I really like your ideas about the "experimental section", that works as an addition and not as an integrated part of your main workflow. This is promising for your productivity, flexibility and innovating sound-design.
Good planning of a complex project never covers more than 70% of the things that finally had to be done to finish the project. When the project is done and you review the way, I always felt myself a kind of stupid about the things I did not planned or I did not expected but I ran into. In a review many things seem to be obvious from the beginning, but not at the starting point. But finally accepting this leads you to new levels.
I hope 'Bender's instrument' will give you everything you expect and demand from it. Thank you for the videos about the process of building this machine. Have fun.
my god man, definitely going back and watching this entire series, looking forward to these sessions
Wow! Looks a lot cleaner Colin. Amazing work.
Your set is really impressive!!! You are so amazing, congrats on everything you do!!
Congrats with this insane rig, can't wait to hear it in action. Also good to see you're not totally screwed but only half (lower left, upper right screws that is).
Magnificent, congrats!!! 👏💪🥳🙌🤜🤛
Looks beautiful 🤩
Congrats! Must have been terrifying to go through all of that! I bet you're so relieved now!
I'm so excited to hear what comes from that chaos case! Lol
amazing wall Colin look forward to the sets love from England
That Verbos HO/Gemini/Shapeshifter/Rainmaker/Drums side is like the core of my much smaller system!
try doing some rings=>clouds with it
Been following your journey since you had some few hundred subs on this channel. Epic journey that seems just really starting. So if intro was that massive, cant wait to hear the song itself. Respect
beautiful little synth! cheers.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how you planned it! Looks great! Looking forward to your streams with this monster.
Nice spaceship dude! God bless you 😀❤😀👽
This is a beast I love it , well done
Looks awesome. Nice job.
Glad to see you've made room for the MATHS
Dude that is amazing 😍
Mammoth. Can’t wait to hear your jams with the new system!
This is awesome! That must turn into a patch cable spaghetti with that many modules! Hope to hear some beep boops soon!
lovely setup dude, can't wait to hear a jam!
No way! That is insane. 🤩 🤩 🤩
I check your channel everyday to see your first session with this new behemoth
A modular synth is never done...
But your wallet is at some point XD
Wise words ...
💪😂
You are a beautiful mind. A genius RESPECT.
beautiful rig. what a beast.
Horizontal Video finally! 👏😅
PHEW
Haha! Yes! It's hard to get the HP when you're watching in rack units
That is an absolute beast, I can feel my module choice anxiety creeping up on me just looking at it. 😂
Killer! Can't wait to hear some patches on this beast -- esp that 24-voice polymonster
Wow, thank you very much for sharing all your work and amazing insights into your modular processes. Thanks fort the quantizer idea with 3 voices. But! That trestle table gives me nightmares.
This is bonkers. I'm both terrified and inspired.
Inspirified, new word! 🥳
It looks absolutely insane.
Looks fantastic! Time to write the book on modular buildout!
That birdkids module that you codesigned is like the holy grail module, one module to rule them all…
💜
Those RMLFX EFCCV units are the dream!
⚡💥⚡💥⚡
really great
This is like TONTO on steroids, but smaller and probably more reliable.
Looks like it can land on Mars! Big rig!
It's been instructive to watch you put together such a large synth together in such a logical way. My baby DIY module synth has a long way to go to get to that stage, but at about $30/module cost to build, my wife is headed to get me there eventually.
respect, cant wait to hear it one day!
Just in time for Eurovision!
WoW.... damn! Nice!
Gorgeous system 🌶
I've any system so a complex one, and I play more accoustic instruments, but, thanks a lot for your explain, so I'm able to learn a little bit, and thanks for your sounds, when you play. I'll enjoy to here you next. Gratulations 💐👌🎼🎵🎵🎵
Awesome setup Bro!
congrats dude!
wow cool! this is amazing :) like to hear you play it live!
Wow, that looks like a control panel of a soviet nuclear reactor or something! Very much looking forward to what you will make with this wall :)
woh, sounds realy good!
Looks fucking amazing Colin!
Very very beautiful. I love to hear some music🤩🤩🤩
good job!!!
"Waarom zou je iets makkelijk doen als het ook moeilijk kan." Is kind of my standard MO. Can't blame you lol.
At about 16:40 you talk about the Verbos High Pass & Low Pass and that it's noisy. I think that is by design: The newer Amp&Tone has a Sallen-Key filter topology and I guess that the older one also has the same topology. This is the filter set that is also used on the MS-20, and one of the characteristics is that it's just a bit noisy. This probably has nothing to do with power or interference from other modules. It's just how it is. I don't have this Verbos filter myself, but I do have a Befaco BF-22, which also has the Sallen-Key topology (and yes, it is a bit noisy)
Wow. Just wow :)
Everything looks solid Colin! Great build!
Just baby the slider on the addac vc transitions. I own two and the sliders on both modules have permanent issues from being too aggressive with them. Be gentle with the vc transitions for longevity. Good luck!
Can't wait to see you going mad on this thing!!
I love the term «my bass district». Congratulations, man! Hope you’re financially secure :)
whoa , too cool
Wow, that's quiet a rig. Almost like a NASA control centre.
I'm still in awe that Modulation seems to be out doing and over powering the traditional EDM setup of Drum machine, Synth, sequencer, sampler, laptop, and Daw.
You can do all of them things, and a whole lot more with a rig likes yours. And you are a genius at it. A groundbreaker of frequency.
Bet you can't wait to start knocking some sine waves and mad patterns on it. Can't wait to hear it either. You da Man!
Holy guacamole that's a anice setup!
wow nice! im speechless hehe
Are you gonna bring the complete monster set to live stage? Can't wait to see you playing live again!
The labelling of OFFSET controller is genial. really useful to have the red knobs that work as inverters.
Absolute mad lad
This is freaking insane... Beyond the jaw-dropping potential of this thing, I can't begin to imagine what the total cost of such a system might be. And what's the total HP count?
Modulargrid gives value estimations for modules also, around $65000 for this. Althought estimations may be way off, some modules may not have price set correctly or at all and also that Hinton power stuff and cases add couple of thousand on top of that. Still it is cheaper than I expected, would have bet 6 figures at least.
Its a CGI fake
It's about 216hp wide by 21U deep, so we're looking at 7 rows of about 216hp, so around 1500hp. I look at my ~360hp and ask myself 2 questions -
1) How awesome would it be to have this much? (Completely!)
2) Would I really need anywhere near this much? (No, not at all!)
Whether I can afford it or not is easy - No, I can't. So those questions don't really matter.
dude this is abnormalll!! djeeeeeeeez!
Holy moly!
Nice shuttle!
You can travel to many universes on that spaceship control centre 🔥🇨🇦👊🏿
This "instrument" is a beast! Awesome!
*If* I may ask, what did it all cost?
At my mom's rate of $20 per hour for the full package, with a working week of around 30 hours, that makes $600 a week, so $2,400 a month, so about $30,000 a year, so a couple of years, but then factor in the amount she has to spend on coke/meth to have the energy, and the cost of therapy, plus the fares for entering and exiting the subway bathrooms she sleeps in... We're looking at about the same as a year's tuition for a lot of students. Or a couple of months for med school. or an afternoon's pay for a CEO.
From now on, they will teach in kindergarten how to fly a Boeing 747! 👍 👍 😊
p.s. I have not the time right now, but I am looking forward to check your music soon!
Very impressive!! Must have costed a fortune!! Myself, I only have the Moog Sub 37, an Eventide Space, an Epi LP with SD P-rails pick-ups and a tin whistle. Nice to see, however! Thanks! Musically yours Liselotte in Sweden.
This video has been teasing me for a month. Sad still no patch / performance video uploaded to the channel on this beautiful kit.
Amazing! I can't imagine how much money is invested in that monster. Can't wait to hear the music you make with it.
according to Modulargrid it's around 63K €, maybe less because of second hand and donations, but if anybody deserves a system like that it's Colin
@@el_dani interesting! Thanks for the info.
Retro Mechanical labs, that is my friend Jon's company, good stuff!
MADNESS!
This is just for the bass parts!
Hahaha good job.
It looks like a control panel on a spaceship!
Awesome sauce. It is definitely gonna need more cowbell!
Hello Colin, you mentioned discovering a method to assign individual clock inputs to each track of the ER-101?? To my knowledge, the only way is to multiple or divide the received clock. But if you found a way to send a separate clock per track I would love to know more about. Thank you
ouuuuuuu this man about to be COOKIN
Tonight I figured out how to install the drivers on the midi controller I've owned for four years, so yeah I'm basically on the same page. >_>;
On a less sardonic note - and forgive me if you've covered this because this is entirely my first exposure to you as a human / artist / fellow obsessive - have you dabbled in any video editing eurorack? My idea for a skiff would be, like, two effects and every video modulating box I can scrap together. Just wondering if that ever crossed your path. Great stuff, looking forward to a deep dive on your channel!
I still have trouble with my midi routing every time I open up ableton, midi is just that hard 🤓
I am lusting over the line of LZX modules, I’d love to get into videosynthesis! Problem is that every time I check out their site, its all sold out and I am way too impatient to preorder things... but some day I’ll definitely get into it!
Wogglebug! 'good luck' 🤣
So impressed with this system! Haven't got a clue what it all does, but am quietly thinking: where's middle C... 🙈
I don't know if it's modulargrid or whatever but:
" This Rack contains modules with incomplete power consumption specs: Pecking Order"
Not into synths per say but I gotta admit beside the cool sounds you make with those, a setup such as yours looks like the cockpit of a spaceship. :D
If you would go for amplitude modulation, I would not use the A-132-1, as there is no attenuation over the incoming (modulator) signal. Try a A-130-2 (Dual lin/exp VCA with gain and attenuation) or A-133-2 (Dual voltage controlled polarizer, like a Moddemix, but more). Both 4 HP.
thanks for these suggestions! will look them up! and thank you for keeping the 4 HP factor in mind!
MAN BUILDS MONSTER EURORACK WITH SWISS ARMY KNIFE.
Somebody won the lottery yet he still has payments to make.
Holy mother of Eurorack! Now all you need to do is build a dual manual keyboard with MIDI stop pulls and a full bass footpedal layout to control the poly section.
Wow 😲😎
Hey Colin, I really enjoy all of your content. I wonder if you could do a video that shows a little of the "behind the scenes" stuff. For example, how do you feed the modular to your audio interface? I know you have mentioned a mixer in the past. Do you use reference monitors to hear the modular or do you normally use headphones? I would love to know how you handle these things that are normally off camera. Thanks for any insight!
