    I remember watching the first BBC Breakfast Time. I can't believe it's 40 years ago! It was really exciting, watching the TV start while having breakfast. Prior to that, there wasn't even a test card...just static on the TV at that time of morning. A very exciting time to be around, back in the 1980's! Thanks for such excellent memories!

    It felt good to hear how passionate Francis feels about the processes in forecasting way back when. It seems magical now but physically picking up papers at Imperial College to creating a picture of the weather for the day ahead in two or three hours feels like something to be admired on top of everything else! The humble shyness he seems to have for it is sincere and charming.
    It's good to know Carol has been involved with Breakfast Time/BBC Breakfast from the start too 🙂

      Francis trained and worked as a meteorologist and listening to him it clearly shows. His enthusiasm for the weather shines through (pardon the pun). Today, I believe those that present the weather are just presenters with a touch of training in meteorology. They couldn't present a forecast with the depth on knowledge and explanation that you saw from Francis in that clip.

    Thanks for posting. I remember the first Breakfast Time. Very sad that within a few years the BBC got ‘cold feet’ and changed to a very formal format which was not a success with viewers handing the ratings battle to ITV.

    They couldn't persuade Selina Scott to turn up or at least make a contribution? That is surprising and indeed disappointing, especially as she seemed keen to tell the media all the problems she experienced at the time. I note that Russell Grant doesn't mention that later in the year he jumped ship and left Breakfast Time for more money at TVam and of course, there's no mention of the much publicized rift between Debbie Rix and Selina Scott who apparently couldn't stand each other. Rix complained openly about her frustration about not moving on from behind the news desk onto the show proper. According to the tabloids, Fern Britton and Debbie Greenwood came on board to Rix's fury while she never progressed. She quit and went to LWT to co-host 'Game For A Laugh' and was never heard of again.

    Breakfast Time was alright really from when it started in 1983 as others really have said too; up until later in 1986 when they altered the format somewhat. After that, it became too heavy and lost viewers really to the then of course TV-am on ITV. As we know in turn, TV-am ended at the end of 1992. In 1993, GMTV came on air on ITV instead, which lasted until 2010. BBC1's Breakfast did pick up later on though really, as it is now then I guess.
    Thank you though!

    • @frglee
      @frglee Рік тому +2

      I think TVam launched with a bit more pizzazz but ultimately breakfast tv was all a bit of a disappointment to many. By 1983 TVam only had 100,000 viewers, until the 'Roland Rat' children's glove puppet was introduced (described as 'the rat that saved a sinking ship'), increasing viewership to 1.8 million. The BBC's rather soporific effort with presenters in casual gear and supping at coffee mugs seems a bit cheesy to me 40 years on. One memory of the time is having that Frank Bough banging on my front door once looking for the prossy in the flat upstairs.

    • @brucedanton3669
      @brucedanton3669 Рік тому +3

      Breakfast Time also later on of course became BBC Breakfast News in 1989; this too really was too heavy for the viewers really alas. It was a mistake to let the nice comfy cosy feel of the original series/show go really. The BBC did really go the wrong way in doing this so at the time somehow. When GMTV started in 1993 as we know on ITV, they too lost viewers really because they were not the same as TV-am which of course had just ended before. But they soon altered their style to one which was like theirs though too. Thank you!

      Once TV-am found its feet it went on to become one of the most profitable ITV stations until its demise at the hands of Mrs Thatcher. GMTV never managed to capitalise on its inheritance and within a year they too were cap in hand to the ITC asking for help. IIRC GMTV never made a profit the whole time it existed,

    I loved Selina Scott, I thought she was wonderful, so for her to s*it all over the show now like it was the worst thing to ever happen to her is really awful. She refused to have anything to do with the 40th anniversary, but she appeared at the 25th celebrations, so I guess her memory improved after 40 years but not 25?!? She should be proud of what she accomplished & just get over what she didn't like, I can see why people don't hire her, as she just likes to look for things to complain about, that gets around quick in industries like this. Funny how this is all coming up now, trying to rekindle herself with a bit of metoo probably, shame that ship has sailed Selina! Sorry about the rant, but I have very happy memories of the early show & she's ruined it for me.

      Have you seen the Saville documentary on Netflix? If not all I can say is Saville appearances on Breakfast Time and his behaviour towards Selina are enlightening to say the least. A lot has come out over the last 15 years.

      @@pipoo1 Selina's complainants are related to Frank Bough. Anything else in nonsense, this was Selina's show, guests are there just for a moment & can't ruin you job, that's ridiculous & frankly pathetic. Don't buy into whinny babies moaning when nothing bad happened to them that would effect any normal person & who are highly over paid for this job.
