Peter Murphy and Trent Reznor in the same room is heaven on earth. Peter Murphy's voice is gorgeous. When he hits those low notes ...wow.
And can we talk about the "Give it" growl? Damn. 🥵
Peter Murphy has some great songs when he went solo after Bauhaus, particularly "Cuts You Up" and "All Night Long." Check him out. Peter sounds great in this video.
Yep, I really enjoyed the "Dust" album
I absolutely loved this performance. Murphy’s voice was spectacular
Agreed!
Oh God I kinda fainted when you said you never heard Bauhaus...
Fun Fact... "Haunted When The Mintues Drag" is a Love & Rockets song... which is the band that the rest of Bauhaus become after they broke up.
I love this verison of Reptile so much for that fun fact.
I've gone back and listened to the original "Haunted..." and this interpretation is light years better, honestly. I'd love to hear a version of the original in Peter Murphy's style as showcased on this performance.
So beautifully haunting.
Bauhaus was a big influence on NIN. Trent loves to honor the folks who inspired him by working with them, like Bowie, Murphy, and Gary Numan. Check out Bela Lugosi's Dead, the very first single Bauhaus put out.
"I don't know who Peter Murphy is" .... you have missed out for too long, time to start exploring. Bauhaus, Peter Murphy solo and don't forget Love & Rockets. If you want a legit starting point try Bela Lugosi's Dead from Coachella 2005, I don't know many people who could hang upside down for 9 minutes let alone singing
I got to see Love and Rockets, Echo and The Bunnymen(one of my all time favorite bands) and New Order ( Used to be Joy Division) all in concert in Philly back in the day.
@@ErikWolowitz Joy division + New order are a top 5 band for me.
I was at Coachella in 2005. That performance was mind blowing.
@@rxblx2442 I was there too! My first time seeing NIN live and that performance of Bauhaus upside down was insane!
This tour was amazing, I had already seen Bauhaus in 1998 on their first reunion tour, which was more than those of us who got into them after they broke up ever thought we were going to see. And then this tour opening for NIN was just ridiculous, even if I did have to remind myself "just because they came first and are an influence, doesn't mean they should be headlining with this crowd" lol.
This is a mashup of a NIN song and a Love and Rockets song (Haunted When the Minutes Drag)
Cannot see the resemblance, honest.
Is it because both have a call and response hook?
@@RogerCRocha It's because it includes lyrics from Haunted When The Minutes Drag at the end.
@@connorbeaton982 Gotcha 👍
I was kinda blown away to be hearing Peter singing a Love and Rockets song. Didn't think I would EVER hear that.
Warm Leatherette from this session is GREAT!
Absolutely the best version of Warm Leatherette anywhere.
Yesss!
YUP
You can tell this is the demo that would go on to become "The Space In Between" for How To Destroy Angels
interesting link
Would never have clocked that!
Oh to be young and not know some of the old alternative heroes.... keep doing the videos and keep learning.
The whole Muphhy/NIN concert is fantastic!!!!! "No cymbals was harmed during this song"
I love this version so damn much.. It never gets old! Especially appreciate that the beat has Prince vibes 💗
Would love to see your take on HTDA, the album and the EPs. I feel like that project doesn't get the astronomical credit it deserves.
In regards to where they were, they were in Massachusetts. It was a special performance for the meet and greet fans as well as for a rock radio station a few hours prior to the Gig.
AMAZING! Love how Murphy segued in lyrics from 'Haunted' by Love&Rockets (the side project that Daniel Ash had apart from Bauhaus that Murphy was left out of). Reznor is sooo great at paying homage to those classic electronic (ie. Gary Numan) and goth legends of the late 70's early 80s.
You can hear Bauhaus influences in a couple of NIN songs. This version is just awesome.
I love all the songs from this session, I listen to them pretty regularly. Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing are so good too!
I really like this version, I like how stripped down and raw it is!
Peter and Trent singing Murphy's Bella lugosi Undead it also awesome. Very haunting...
Ooooh, YES! This is one of my favorites!! Def look this one up...Trent, Peter Murphy, and TV on the Radio. Excellent!
@@jenngrrl yep i have it in favourites favourites rotation.
I heard this version before the original, I'm a massive fan of Jeordie White and this performance got me into Peter Murphy's songs as well. I love it when Twiggy gets lost and forgets to grab the microphone I can't stop laughing ❤️
I love your input and analysis Of the music...been watching you every chance I get. Your a very knowledgeable young lady...thank you for your posts
Everything they played in this little concert was really cool, check out their cover of Warm Leatherette
During this era he collabed with Peter Murphy a few times. Searching for Peter Murphy Nine Inch Nails on youtube gets you a short list of goodies, the best ones are of low quality as they are just cameras from the crowd.. One where Trent, Peter and TV On The Radio play a version of Bela Lugosi's dead. It's a .. weird thing, but it's also really cool. And then there's another where they cover Joy Division's Atmosphere.. In Atmosphere, Peter goes full vampire mode, and the power in his voice is fucking unbelievable. HEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAaaAAAA HOOOOOUUUUUUEEAA etc.
Check it out if you haven't already.
Yeah I saw him open for NIN on the 2006 tour. Awesome performer.
Ebow - i am a child to - love this toy of atmosphere since the 80is - what a great performance (Radiosession)…
oh i love this version, so dirty and sleezy and cool
"Need to contaminate to alleviate this loneliness" i love how Peter Murphy Voice escalates here
I found this because “Cuts You Up” has been stuck in my head and I was looking for reactions to that, but I love this performance and have seen some of this channel’s videos before.
Anyway, “don’t know Peter Murphy?” Want to see more Peter Murphy, check out the film The Hunger, he and David Bowie are both in that classic Gothic Horror film from the ‘80s.
GOAT version. Grandpa Witch in his finest form, an early appearance of a then unknown Atticus, Geordie's fantastic tone and God's bass/backing vox.
It’s incredibly endearing when, at 13:20, you’ve finished making your point, but couldn’t help but play a little more because you loved the sound so much
"Haunted when the minutes drag" comes from a Love & Rockets (Peter's bandmates from Bauhaus) song. ua-cam.com/video/ca1UQ85_tEY/v-deo.html Also, Peter married a woman from Turkey and he moved there. You can hear the micro-tonal influence common to that area in his singing style.
This video got me into Murphy
Speaking of versions, could you do an analysis for the reharmonization in “The Great Destroyer (Modwheelmood)”, that’s in the Year Zero Remixed album? It’s my favorite NIN remix track.
LOL, I have used Eboe as a user name since 1995, a deliberate mis-spelling of E-bow, and my head snapped up from typing my comment even though I knew you were not talking to me, haha.
This whole set was amazing
Fascinating! I was not aware of Peter Murphy either. But, I will be looking into him over the course of the next week. Thank you so very much for sharing this performance!
That bowed metal sound is there though at the 2:52 mark of this video. There's also the atmospherics in the background during the chorus.
It’s kinda buried in the mix.
This is from a radio show, they did radio shows on this tour and did versions of songs and different covers at each show, they are all online in places.
Ooohhh I was hoping you'd do this one ❤️❤️❤️
Edit: Its also fun hearing you say my name (Jeordie and I share names tee-hee)
Haunted when the minutes drag is a title of this song by Love & Rockets - maybe they were calling back to that?
Sometime in the late 2000s, Peter Murphy went on tour with NIN and actually performed Reptile on stage. Got to see him then and it was freaking awesome.
Are you referring to this tour when Bauhaus opened for NIN in 2006?
I love this version of reptile, his voice just fits it so well.
love this too ! I was lucky enough to see Peter perform a few times solo and once w Bauhaus .. he's the best !!!
I heard this version of Reptile for the first time earlier this year and fell in love with it. I didn't know who Peter Murphy was either, and still haven't dug into the Bauhaus discography, but definitely plan to. Hair-raising stuff!
I love Peter Murphy. I saw him live about 10 years ago. He was great!
Peter Murphy did amazing in this performance gave me chillss 💖💖 you should really check his music out and ofc bauhauss
What I really love about this, especially compared to the David Bowie version, is that it feels transformative. I love David Bowie, hes my favorite artist, but that duet didnt feel like "the David Bowie version" as much as David Bowie messing with the NIN version. This really felt like a new song, and I think I like it just as much as the original
No timestamp, but that short look and "sorry" subtitle... :-D
❤❤Haunted When The Minutes Drag. 💕 Definitely dig into Bauhaus you will love them!!!!! One of my first pieces of vinyl from back in the day. Great analysis!!!!!!❤❤❤
I love this version!!
I know they're kind of the progenitors of goth, but I've always know Bauhaus as an experimental post-punk band, probably because I started with The Sky's Gone Out, the Swing the Heartache collection, and some of the 12". There's a lot of dub elements and extended samples and what seem like cut-up techniques with the general atmosphere and mood (imagine that with maybe a drippy font).
Haunted When the Minutes Drag is a Love and Rockets song (which is Bauhaus without the Peter Murphy) and was a pretty cool and unexpected treat. I think this was 2006 and Bauhaus had just regrouped for a tour and I think supported NIN for With Teeth. Not sure where that falls in the timeline exactly.
I mean, they were a goth band in the same way that The Clash were a punk band, they helped define the sound but were never constrained by the sound. The Cure were that way too, and honestly if we consider New Order an extension of Joy Division as they would have headed that way anyway, they didn't get caught up in it either permanently, those bands all branched out, but they still had a defining sound.
Yeah this was from the radio shows they did while out on the second US leg of the With Teeth tour in 2006, with Bauhaus and Peaches, or at least that is how I saw them in Columbus. There were lightning storms close by when Bauhaus played and it set the perfect atmosphere, haha.
I admit I was surprised to hear Peter singing Haunted as I never imagined in a million years that he would sing a L&R song.
I was just telling a friend how phenomenal this cover is. Murphy almost outshines Trent on the delivery of his own song but the transition into haunted is fantastic!!!! Also please check out a lot of Murphy’s projects he is an absolutely pivotal legend :)
Peter Murphy in general kicks ass at almost every cover he does. The way he sings on Bauhaus’s Ziggy cover is just unreal. Bauhaus’s cover of Dead Can Dance’s Severance is also great
Yeah, "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy is an amazing song.
ixi, ixi, ixi!!!!!!! OMG, as brilliant as you are there is so much you don't know still, lol. My jaw dropped when you said you didn't know who he was. I've been a NIN fan since 1990 and the first time I heard this version, just recently, I swore it was a Bauhaus song, not a Peter Murphy solo, not NIN song, etc. but an actual Bauhaus song. This reminds me of the Bauhaus album Burning From the Indie. The style change was so good I was 100% fooled until Trent came in with his vocals, which was so confusing to me at the time. Trent has a way of just disappearing into the background.
You should dive into Gary Numan too. It's all Trent getting to work with his influences.
It's true! any particular tracks you recommend?
0:44 Say WHA? Now, you're pretty damn lucky to have an opportunity to get to know his world.. An opportunity to discover all those tons of amazing music from zero.. Have a great time :]
Edit: NO BAUHAUS in your life? I'd start from "Bela Lugosi's dead" to crank up the hunger.. RIGHT NOW!!!
Not to mention Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets and solo Peter. I never really listened to Dali's Car.
Ixi, I consistently respect your analysis but if you haven't listened to Bauhaus that feels like a great big blindspot in your understanding of what Trent came out of. You are 100% right on the Bowie reference on Murphy but most of the industrial that influenced Trent was coming out of the same underground that Bauhaus were hugely involved in. I'm not promising you're going to like their stuff (I hope you do) but you need to hear it to understand Trent, just like you'd need to at least hear New York Dolls at least once to understand modern rock.
Bauhaus is amazing. You need to dive into their catalogue. I heard a story that Peter had a huge fan crush on Bowie that's why they did a Ziggy Stardust cover.
Any specific recommendations? I checked out Dark Entries and Bela Legosi's Dead.
Hollow Hills & In The Flat Field are both INCREDIBLE songs with amazing vocals by Peter Murphy
The Relaxed Reptile
I’ve been hooked on your channel for the last few days. I would love to hear your reaction to the band IAMX. I imagine you would love their depth and talent.
Or Cevin Key's "Anger is an Acid" with Chris Corner om the vocals. It is haunting. Gives me chills.
Strange Kind of Love from same performance 👌
There’s an almost Frippertronics feel to this. It recalls Heroes era Bowie
"I don't know who Peter Murphy is..." >>> This is the sound of me having an aneurysm.
"Sorry. I'm a child." -- ixi music
Oh hell yes! They Peter Murphy’d this song, is why they tweaked it a bit 😉
The Godfather of Goth 🖤
I watched this video when you first put it out, but now I suddenly need to know.. did you listen to their version of Head Like a Hole? It's my favorite version of it.
Also...if you do get an ebow....they are fragile. Dropped it while I was playing...on carpet....it was toast.
This is my favorite version of this song.
7:03 Me too. A child excited by an Ebow.
and yes that bass tone is great
YEEEEEEEES
I love this version the most!
You should definitely check out Bauhaus.
and Peter Murphy's solo stuff.
@@claymccoy Yes! That too.
I'm very happy that you made this analysis - still, I really like Your version from the other video
His rendition of Head like a Hole is insanely good!
The reason why i bought an ebow
You weren't kidding about the stripped down nature of this version. But it truly is an amazing reimagining of the song, especially how they worked "Haunted" into it. This shows how Bauhaus really inspired Trent, much like how Bowie and Joy Division did in their different ways. Peter Murphy solo and Bauhaus are both incredible. You really ought to do a deep dive into them.
If only all three Trent, David, and Peter could've done this together!🤯
And of course, Bowie influenced Ian Curtis, Peter Murphy, and other Reznor influences like Robert Smith, so he is the Meta influence for all of it. Fucking David Bowie, the master.
it looks/sounds like to me like they are either backstage at a venue or possibly in a hotel performing for VIP's/contest winners etc... that's my guess.
Beautiful Ixi please please listen to bela Lugosi s dead.. and Cut you up... Not on UA-cam but in the dark alone. It is how we did it. It is super lovely. I think you might find something special there.
Bauhaus is pretty raw but keep in mind they were originally active from 1978-1983. Screaming is kinda Pete's thing. Bauhaus split into pete solo and a band called tones on tail. Tones on tail became love and rockets. all three have cool songs. Dan Ash is amazing as well. You should do a deep dive.
Bonus points for including Tones on Tail, even I forgot them in some of my comments.
@@eboethrasher I love music. When I find anything I like I dive deep. Growing up with the internet has made this easy.
I listened to this song all through 2009. That's it. Only this song for 364 days.
Bauhaus, the first goth band.
Bauhaus had such a cult goth following. Can't believe you didn't get exposed to them or Love and Rockets. Hope you can take a dive into Peter Murphy. It will be worthwhile. ❤️
i am not familiar with Peter Murphey, but between this cover, and the comments I'm gong to check him out.
I hadn’t heard this particular recording but I had a bootleg of one of the other sessions back in the day.
I wish Peter had played around more with this style. Some of his solo stuff gets close but it never went all the way.
EBOW!
This drum pattern with the added fills, the fuzzy bass...This version is great. I'd say it's sexier.
Not sure if anyone’s posted this. Was at this show where Peter Murphy performed “Reptile” live and, well, enjoy!
ua-cam.com/video/se46lZOOQoU/v-deo.html
It was after a show in Foxboro Massachusetts. Probably a hotel near there.
I was at the show, not the after event. I want to say it was a raffle for fanclub members?
A follow up to this. I believe it was sponsored/hosted by WBCN for anyone in the Eastern New England area who remembers that station hahaha
Ebow!😂😂
I love this so much, i show it to all my mates, Pete's a goddamn legend and now when i sing it... i sing it more like Pete. Check out Love and Rockets :D Song 'So Alive' x
Peter Murphy has one of the most beautiful male voices, give him a shot. Listen to "hit song" and "a strange kind of love" for example. 😉
The bassline during the verses sounds similar to the end guitar on Closer.
Bauhaus, as well as Peter Murphys solo stuff is worth looking into, as it influenced Trent alot.
Thanks! Been starting to check it it the past couple days.
@@iximusic Ixi, look up on you tube 'reptile" Peter Murphy dropping in..
It's a 2015 NIN performance where peter.....makes quite the "entrance " enjoy! 🖤🖤🖤
oh man, do Bela with Murphy and TV on the Radio next, an amazing cover of that song
She doesn't know Bauhaus, she wouldn't have a point of comparison.
@@VuotoPneumaNN a) how you know b) what's that matter
@@svperstar A) It's one of the very first things she says IN THIS VERY VIDEO.
B) It is important to be familiar with the original version of a song, especially an iconic and influential one like BLID, to judge the qualities of a cover version.
@@VuotoPneumaNN all the more reason for her to check it out!
off the cuff performance without tons of rehearsal pretty darn groovy..and trent does rehash sound very well
murphy is the authority of goth vocals imo
The low end of them for sure. You've got Siouxsie for the female version, and you've got Robert Smith, and Andrew Eldritch too. And also Ian Curtis we can't forget him.
I think the space resembles some kind of office building.
Is that twiggy on the guitar?
I cannot hear _Reptile_ any other way now. Maybe I'm the odd one. For example, while I like Johnny Cash's version of _Hurt_, it's poignant, but to me the original still hasn't been topped. So I prefer the original version of _Hurt_ and the Peter Murphy version of Reptile. Maybe I'm a weirdo, I don't know.
Either way, what I do know is that this entire session is amazing.
I was a huge Bauhaus fan back in the day. That said I didnt care too much for this version. Bauhaus has a lot of good stuff, I think most know them for Bela Lagosi's Dead... pretty much a goth anthem even today.
That was really cool. I don't really know Peter Murphy or Bauhaus either, but I loved Cuts You Up since I was a kid (terrible video, though).
Such a sexy version
