Weird I'm 27 but considered by most to be a millennial especially since I'm often mistaken for being much older than I actually am I've been told I have an old soul too whatever that means, which I'm sure differs from person to person.. But basically what I'm saying is there doesn't seem to be any clear line between generations it's very confusing for someone like me

When I was in school we looked forward to learning cursive writing bc it was the "adult" way to write. We started out learning the standard script, but many of us then experimented with adding our own personal style to it. Over the years, our writing style continued to evolve to make it it own. There was even a whole industry devoted to analyzing a person's writing. E.g. Do you close the loop on your Y or just leave a hook? 😂 Aside from that it's a much faster way to write when you have to write by hand, but even the quality of your print writing is better if you know cursive bc of the fine motor skill you develop from hours of cursive writing. 🤷‍♀️ It is what it is. It won't end civilization if you don't know it but it's a good thing to know.

My handwriting has never been great...even my normal penmanship & Cursive for it to be decent has to be done slowly. For the latter I never developed the skill (or patience) for really nice Cursive. Usually I make due with a certain degree of "merely okay" quick writing. THEN there is the rapid wrist flicking of what I tend to call "chicken scratch" penmanship that sometimes even I myself have a hard time reading. This latter form is really only achievable on small paper...3in x 5in being ideal...where I can write as fast as the words develop or even outpace.

It's one of those things that are easy to learn. Especially if you only want to learn how to read. If you want to learn it, do so. Certain old documents are only in cursive.Yes, the text has been digitalised, but still. If, at one point, no-one who knows cursive were still around and all the books etc. explaining it lost, how would people decipher a newly discovered old piece of writing?

For one thing, cursive writing is a great way for children to practice and improve their fine motor skills. That's why when they begin writing cursive the letters are so poorly formed, but improve so much with practice.

Maybe it’s because I’m European… but cursive is pretty much still a thing where I live. Throughout elementary school, kids learn cursive. They get graded on their handwriting. You can’t fail a class if your handwriting is crappy, but it does earn you remarks on your report cards, during parent-teacher conferences etc. Some times kids will have to re-do their homework or get docked points if they don’t write at least legibly and even though after a few years, cursive isn’t enforced anymore, kids are heavily encouraged to join their letters and expected to be able to read it. So far I haven’t met a kid who can read, who can’t read cursive. My neighbour’s kid is eight years old. She reads cursive just fine. Until I came across memes about it, I wasn’t even aware not being able to read or write cursive was even a thing in a Western, literate setting. I guess I learned something new.
