Forging A Knife From Cy Swan's Twist Damascus 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- I uncovered an old billet of Cy Swan's twist damascus. The billet was split in two for two knives. The first knife went to The Essential Craftsman, lets forge the second knife and see what happens.

Frustrating! But my guy's got standards. High standards. And that's why we love GB.
I would etch it like normal then heat it to 250-300f and submerge it in a baking soda solution. It should create a capillary effect and neutralize any acid left. The coat in a thin oil. You know CY Swan would etch it.
Perhaps its just me but you got a lot of meat in it
That's super frustrating, but I think I would have done the same. Thanks for sharing the process with us regardless.
9:55 Maybe etch it some more, then set it aside and give us an update on whether those delaminations start corroding. I would guess they would become visible again once some rust sets in...
Supporter giveaway! Let's be real Steve, there's basically no chance on God's green flat earth a knife like that would ever be used for anything other than a show piece if it were owned by a fan, let alone to the point where those possible issues could possibly cause a catastrophic failure. You the man Steve!
Oh bugger. That was unfortunate. Like you said, it happens sometimes. I reckon, cut it up into bite size pieces, including the two bits you cut off earlier, bung em all in a cannister. Forge and see what happens.
Can't wait to get a press because spending all day hammering is time consuming and inefficient lol
I would finish it, like for display knife, so LOTS OF fancy etching(maybe using that laser you used for cthulhu knife) and super weird complex handle.
Is this a lack of flux/heat situation? I know next to nothing, well...I know a smidge about blacksmithing but it pales in comparison to those who actually you know, do the trade. I know how to weld and my boss hold blacksmithing classes once every month, very rarely more than when time permitted.
Thanks for keeping it real!
Ah pattern welding, because when your regular knife making out of mono steel isn't hard enough that you feel the need to set yourself up for potentially dozens of delaminations!
Without being able to see it myself its hard to make a call on ditching it. So I'll trust your judgement there and if its not worth putting your name on it I wouldn't continue with it either.
I'm happily take that off your hand so you could stare at better things, mate!
Solid forge work. Bad welds are bad welds though.
Maybe give it a full etch and keep it around to test if those corrosion issues develop in the future?
Yeah, unfortunately sh*t happens, Steve. 😕
But I would finish it, etch and everything. About the future... We'll see it later.
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
That's a shame the pattern looked really nice.
Make it into a carving knife and send to Doug Linker!
I think you should finish it and keep it as a shop knife
Thanks for the video GB.
Can you turn it into a straight razor to two???
You're in the Tulsa area right? Do you ever go to any events or shows to show off your work? I'd like to stop by if you ever have a booth or anything.
I don’t right now but I’ll let folks know if I do
This is why I love your videos and your channel, it's just like being in my workshop, mistakes and all. Cheers, Mr. Beetle :)
Right on
I wonder if a hollow grind would fix the issue? What dumb luck.
Interesting thought
Finish the blade and keep it as a reminder of just how incredibly difficult forge welding really is!
Keep the aspidistra flying!

Awesome. That incredible video 👍👍
I’d finish it personally, etch it, and give it to somebody or keep it for yourself. See how it ages, if it does open up or show corrosion weakness. It’s still useful as a knife and a learning tool Imho. You can have a knife with a shorter life span (potentially) or no knife at all. The conservationist in me would opt for the former.
I've seen Shurap weld bolts to the tang instead of forging a tang out of damascus. Have you ever considered that or using crap pieces to preserve your beautiful craftsmanship?
Good for you for keeping in the setbacks. You do great work but it's good to know that even the pros have things happen to their projects.
We don’t make mistakes we make smaller knives
😎
Yep, it hurts but that's the right call, you have to know when to walk away. Looks great though!
Keep grinding and get into DnD miniatures.
💥
Schmeiß weg...
Top knotch Steve, awesome to see what care you take over your builds, and that you don't like wasting anything either. Good one.
Thanks 👍
It’s heartbreaking but necessary sometimes
Awe, man! That's disheartening. We who make knives don't make mistakes, just shorter knives..... sort of. You are the man..... man! Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks 👍
Beautiful knife
Make some jewlery from the material.
It would be lovely to use for testing. I'd still buy it with an honest statement like this video that points out the flaws. Would be a nice show piece!
Delams happen and yes it's frustrating. I think you made the right decision. Thanks for showing it in its entirety. 👍
Thanks for watching, my brother
