Something completely missed in this video is the distorted time period. They had advanced cars, an e-reader, etc, but with super old TVs and furniture aesthetic. The seasons shift constantly as well through out the story.
The seasons shifting could mean that a long time has past, this can be a unique way of explaining the passage of normal time. Having good cars doesn't mean you won't have good tvs, some people keep old tvs because they just don't feel the need to buy a new one. Furniture can be passed down.

@@Reinnemann2 If the video is correct about there being no physical escape from the curse, then why does it take so long for the demon to get to its next victim? This definitely needs to be addressed in the sequel, if there ever is one. If it can simply materialize at will whenever and wherever it wants it would show up immediately.
The relentlessness of the thing chasing is the scariest. You can never really rest or feel safe. How do you sleep or have any mental recovery when you know something is going to relentlessly chase you???

Great explanation, as you said, I think it is a Demon as well. There was a scene at that old Detroit abandon house that had covered it's windows and there was a image of a what looked like to be a Demon.

Ever since I saw Smile, I’m curious if the Smile demon and the It Follows demon are from the same demon family as they both like to follow and torment their victims a bit before killing them and each have a similar of passing the curse along ( one has to watch the victim it possesses die, the other one the victim needs to passionately hug to get rid of it).
The beginning scene was set in modern time (evidenced by the cellphone) while Jay's timeline was set in the past (evidenced by the old timey tv sets). This means that they did not defeat the monster during their time.
