  • Sir Christopher Lee at University College Dublin, discusses Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of Tolkien's 'Return of the King' and Lord of the Rings series.
    www.ucd.ie/news/2011/11NOV11/0...
Legendary British horror actor, Sir Christopher Lee who portrayed the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror Film was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the UCD Law Society.
"We are honoured to present Sir Christopher Lee with Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society. His corpus of work is truly legendary," says Francis McNamara, Auditor of the UCD Law Society.
"His dedication to his craft for more than half a century should serve as an inspiration to each and every one of us."
"His portrayal of the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror production terrified audiences throughout the world, and as a result Christopher Lee, who stands at 6 foot 5 inches tall, became one of the most recognisable faces and figures of cinema."
Previous recipients of Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society include: Jessie Jackson, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Irons, and Seamus Heaney.
But it was not until the early 2000s that his career reached even higher heights from his appearances in two blockbuster film franchises: as Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003), and as Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (2002).
Born in 1922 in London, England, Christopher Lee is of noble Italian ancestry on his mother's side (Carandini). His mother, Contessa Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano, was a noted Edwardian beauty and was painted by John Lavery, Oswald Birley and Olive Snell and sculpted by Clare Sheridan, a cousin of Winston Churchill.
The Carandini family is one of the oldest in Europe and traces itself back to the first century AD. It is believed to have been connected with the Emperor Charlemagne, and as such was granted the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
In 2009, Lee (89) was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the film and television industries. And this year (2011), he received a BAFTA Fellowship.

I thought you were referring to this video clip as a masterclass, until I read your original comment again, after having typed out my response, which I include unedited. He has got poise, grace, and savoir faire, not to mention good diction, posture, and fashion sense. More action sequences ,more dialogue . For gods sake they add 30 minutes in the first one , 43 minutes in the second one , and then 50 minutes in the third movie . I reccomend the hobbit extended editions too. Nearly I think 15 to 20 minutes were added in each film . And of course don't get me started on the special features and appendices . He always makes sure to use the proper titles, like instead of just saying "on top of the tower" he says "Orthanc" because to him it isn't just the tower in the film he acted in, it's a part of a world he's enjoyed inhabiting for years through the books.

I completely agree with Lee. The confrontation at Orthanc was a very important scene and some closure would be nice as to what becomes of him (obviously what Tokien really had in store for him would be too much to include in the film ie returning to the Shire and laying waste to it). I'll never understand how they could cut out such an epic scene between Gandalf and Saruman.

With help from Dunlendings and Goblin-men sent from Saruman, Lotho took over control of the Shire, imprisoning many. He then began industrializing the once green and agrarian Shire, causing much damage. Soon the deposed Saruman arrived and took full control and Lotho was deposed, imprisoned, and later killed by Wormtongue, and/or possibly eaten.
Before returning to the Shire, Frodo and company stayed at The Prancing Pony in Bree where they caught up on the last year's local events. Gandalf takes the four Hobbits - Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin - part way to the Shire but detour to have a long talk with Tom Bombadil. He assures the four that their training in the War of the Ring will be sufficient to settle the troubles in the Shire.
When they discover that the evil they had fought in Mordor had come home to roost, Frodo and company rouse the Shire and are able to kill or drive off the evil-doers that infested it. With the assistance of Farmer Cotton, Merry and Pippin lead the Battle of Bywater, the last battle in the War of the Ring, in which 19 hobbits died, and which in this battle, 100 (half of Saruman's force) were killed, the remaining Orcs and Ruffians retreated away from Hobbiton.
Saruman and Wormtongue come to their ends shortly thereafter, when Worm avenges a kick from his master by cutting his throat and is there after shot to death by arrows from Hobbits. An eerie column of mist arises from Saruman's corpse and is blown away in the wind, a scene reminiscent of Sauron's demise. Frodo covers the suddenly shriveled skull of Saruman and turns away.

I agree with what he says. He is the ultimate villain in the movies. Sauron almost never spoke. I know Sauron's fall at the end was the peak of the rivalry but Saruman's death was more related to the fellowship as he caused them more trouble than Sauron. They were like Darth Vader and Palpatine. Even though Palpatine was the top of the pyramid, people cared more when Vader died. Can you imagine George Lucas cutting out the scene where Vader dies? I didn't think so...

      @Brollvelin 10 років тому

Aye, I know, I was just informing you(I didn't know if you knew or not). But yes, the films changed a lot. But some people are pissed off at the Saruman death in the extended edition. And would rather have his fate be unknown, like it was in the unextended edition.

      Breki Björnsson
Yeh, no problem. I can understand those people, his death is a bit exaggerated in the movies, falling from Orthanc directly on a spike and all that^^. But at least this explains what happened to him instead of letting him just disappear from the story although he had such a prominent role in the first two installments. Personally I would have prefered if they somehow included the "Scouring of the Shire" because of various reasons, but it would have been very anticlimatic and maybe would not have worked for a movie. Well...thats why we have both the films and the books I guess :D

So that would mean his fate isn't entirely unknown it's just kinda left as a sidenote. Still a dissappointment and probably the most important part of the extended cut

When you are15 your memory cabinet is only few files and you can remember almost everything, and quickly. When you are older, a few forget things, and other retain such large files that it takes a while to find the answer, going thru it all. This is a fact. Mr. Lee shows this very thing here by recommenting on one person's question before answering another's totally different question.

I agree, I remember watching the film, and it was like
    "he's in the tower"
    "Well what should we do"
    "Oh just leave him there"
And it's like... why would you leave the BIGGEST PHYSICAL THREAT, A literal angel who turned evil, who's responsible for the deaths of thousands, without confronting him, or trying to get some information out of him? He was like the most important person on Saurons side, leaving him in the tower makes no sense. In the Extended edition, they intend to interrogate him because of all his knowledge, and then of course, he gets killed.
Sauron is the overall big bad, but I feel like Sauron more represents the idea of evil, he's not really a character in the context of the films. Saruman is the real big bad of the trilogy imo, and leaving out his death scene robs us of closure of the biggest actual villain in the films.
I don't understand the reason for leaving it out.

I don't even consider the theatrical versions as films anymore, more like trailers :P GET THEM ALL!! From the third one I think you are missing around 50 minutes if you didn't see the extended one.

tbh one of the gravest omissions to me was the 'battle for the Shire' toward the end of the tale; that Saruman still lived, and though deprived of his magiks, still retained his most powerful sorcerer's weapon - the power of persuasion. he didn't "die" in the tower, he removed himself from the larger conflict.

Do you think all "nazis" that were killed during war were bad people. Do you think everybody liked to fight and die a cruel death? There were a lot of germans killed because they did not obey, but its easier to call them all bad people and make "nazi killers" heroes.
