Gondor isn't a city.
Rohan isn't a city.
Gondor is a Kingdom and Rohan is a Kingdom.
Minas Tirith is the White City in Gondor.
Edoras is the city on the hill in Rohan.
Nick not understanding the simple concept, of the importance of Rohan, is infuriating
His criticism always borders on him hinting that he could do better than what he’s seeing on screen.

@@benmartinez5999 I couldn't finish the Star Wars reviews because he just sucks. Doesn't know what he's talking about, picks at things that are obvious or explained, says what's wrong with things when he's clearly wrong etc.
Rohan is important because they represent the history of the division of man. Also, we see Rohan for the first time in a state of decay, which displays the reach of Sauron/Saruman, and foreshadows what will happen to Gondor. Rohan also gives us a glimpse of the unity that the fellowship will bring to all of the peoples when Gandalf restores Theoden. But what’s more pressing is the geographical importance: Rohan is north of Gondor and it’s strategically important for Saruman to control the sort of entrance to Gondor. Then Gandalf peaces out, but it’s cool because Aragorn can bring men (and elves in the movies) together to hold off Saruman.
The way I understood it, Rohan is WW2 France, and Edoras/Helm's Deep is Omaha Beach. To put it in perspective.
Have you guys even seen Return of the King? If Saruman wiped out all the men of Rohan they wouldn't have been able to help Gondor win the Battle of Pelennor Fields. If the White City fell Aragorn wouldn't have been able to draw Sauron's gaze and armies out of Mordor. If Sauron had kept his focus on searching for the ring he would have caught Frodo and Sam, reclaimed the One Ring, and destroyed the world of men. Lord of the Rings is literally about all the peoples of Middle Earth fighting and straining and just barely succeeding by their combined efforts.
Well we haven't gotten to Return of the King yet so they can't talk about how Rohan might be important, they can only say how they feel about them right now.
There's always an episode in every In Review series where Nick goes a bit too hard lol

You have to have a hold on at least some of the lore to understand why the humans in Rohan and gondor have anything to do with any of this
Erik Aufdenkamp not really. There’s no elves, dwarves are all hiding. So men are the only ones who can stand against sauron. Pretty easy to understand and is explained in FOTR
I guess you're right. I'm just a lotr nerd. But they do play a large part in the history of all of arda.
I kinda hoped that since Elyse has the ring she would show up each video gradually more ragged like Frodo, ultimately ending with a full-on Gollum costume. You can have that idea for free ;)

I prefer watching them back-to-back. Two Towers and Return of the King don't stand alone as well as Fellowship.

I always thought “Gollum” was the noise his hacking cough made. And he was called Gollum cause he had forgotten his name. That’s why Frodo using Sméagol was such a huge moment for Gollum.
But I genuinely don’t know if that’s something I remember from the books, or something I just made up as head cannon.
You are right. It was in the books. Back when he was in his home village, after he got the ring and started sneaking around, people called him Gollum because of the weird throat noise he would make.

One thing that makes the scene with the Ent draught special to me isn't from the movies, or the books, it's from the Animated Rankin and Bass Return of the King. Even though the Animated movies skip the scene in question, they end with talking about how Merry and Pippen are taller than the other Hobbits and, as Elves are all leaving Middle Earth, and the Dwarves are all delving deeper underground, it is now the beginning of the Age of Men. And as Hobbits are growing larger, there will be a time where they are mingled with mankind, and the line from the cartoon is something like "You may wonder...is there perhaps a bit of Hobbit in me?" It's a simple little thing, but I always loved it.
I forgot about that line. I used to watch that a bunch as a kid!
As a Swede watching these movies I never actually thought of the fact that some of the names of stuff weren't translated. Tolkien just used words from other languages. Like
Gamling = Old person
Warg (Varg) = Wolf
Isengaard ~= Ice yard
Best movie in the trilogy and this first part is great set up.

Smeagol fits the description of a necessary evil. He has his own ends and everyone knows it but hes also a part of the plan for the destruction of the ring.

Nick's issue with only Frodo's part of the story being important is weird. That would be like saying "well it doesn't really matter what Luke is doing on the Death Star in Return of the Jedi so long as Lando blows up the reactor."
This in review series started and I’ve already blasted through all of the extended editions. Absolutely loving these ones, and having Elyse there has been stellar. Keep killing it 🧡

Nick, just because Frodo’s job is most important, doesn’t take away from the fact that the rest of the team still has to fight against Sauron, and hold his attention away from Frodo and Sam. Otherwise it’ll be even harder for Frodo

The bad guys cannot fathom that anyone would ever even contemplate destroying the one ring. They believe that the way it makes you lust for power is absolute and never question it.
So while Frodo and Sam are trying to sneak in the back door, everyone else had to make it look like they were still doing ring shit and opposing Sauron. Keep his eye on the king rather than on the ring, you know.

The film is dope and all, but have Y’all seen the trailer for this one, the one that has a more epic version of the Requiem for a Dream theme, because that trailer is awesome

Human villages are literally being raided. You see those two kids leave their home before their parents almost get murdered and Nick is like "why do i care?"
To Tim, asking why Frodo gives so much of a chance to Golem. The way I see it, he kind of has to believe that Hobbits "aka Golem" can turn back to normal, because not only does he hope that Bilbo can one day move past the hardships of the ring, but he also needs to believe that him and Sam are gonna be alright after the ring as well.
He also knows that if he let's Smeagol die, the ring might never get destroyed. He remembers what Gandalf said about Smeagol would aid in the destruction of the ring.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Wormtongue is related to a character from The Hobbit who definitely earned that name for his family.

Elyse's teeth are frustratingly perfect and I have half a nerve to get my parents on the horn and get pissy with them for not getting me braces as a youth.
To Kevin's point about stars in the corner of the screen to know if a scene is added or not... The physical copies of these movies have seen guides that have asterisks next to the scene names that are added or extended

13:40, I’m not gonna spoil it here but it gets explained why everyone who isn’t Frodo & Sam is doing what they’re doing in a later movie. As far as Two Towers, Aragorn’s whole story arc is to become the king unite the all the Men of Middle-Earth - there wouldn’t be anything to unite if Gondor was the only kingdom. Plus they’re the cavalry, which becomes essential in future battles.
"Why do I care about Rohan?" (I didn't read the books, I'm just guessing based on what I've seen.)
Because Aragorn cares about Rohan, he may even be blaming himself for the various predicaments going on in the area. How many times do they talk about how bitter they are that they called for Aid from Gondor and never got it? It's possible that Aragorn feels responsible for that because he's avoided the throne for so long, and it would have been his call to make, had he been there.
But I don't think it was a quid pro quo situation, just to cash-in personal favors later in the trilogy and extort everyone's allegiance and loyalty so he could overthrow Denethor. He was trying to set things right, helping people, inspiring people, earning their respect, being the first guy to pull out his sword and charge in and not sit on his ass and make everybody else do it. He redeems Gondor by doing so.

Tolkien didn't name the book "The Two Towers". He wrote one manuscript called "The Lord of The Rings" divided into six parts. The publisher of the books divided the manuscript into three parts (two parts for each book) and came up with the names of the books, so that is why there is confusion over what are the Two Towers.

Frodo and Sam taking the ring to Mordor is the main quest.
But everybody else in the story seems pretty well aware that they're the side-quest.
But that's still three movies of Frodo and Sam taking the ring to Mordor. In the first movie, walking to Mordor. the next movie, walking to Mordor. The next movie, walking to Mordor. That's why the third entry isn't called "Lord of the Rings: The One With The Volcano." It's called "Return of the King," and if you get this far into the trilogy and still don't have even the slightest idea as to what that's referring to, then I don't know how to help you. XD.
It's J.R.R. Tolkien, not George Lucas just haphazardly pulling plot points out of his ass at random to stall for two movies until you get to "Episode III - The One With The Volcano".

The Wizard colours are kinda like job titles, so now that Gandalf is white, he is what Saruman was supposed to be.
The whole point was keeping Sauron's gaze off from Frodo!! It's to make Saruman and Sauron's armies concentrate on them and not the hobbits approaching Mount Doom.
I looked forward to this all week! Love all of you and love the show.

First half of Two Towers is all build up it can feel pretty slow, but the second half really picks up the pace. Fellowship was perfect throughout but this is probably the lowest point in the trilogy for me.

Superman 1 and 2 (Christopher Reeves) were filmed simultaneously.
Most of 2 was. They had to stop to concentrate on finishing 1. Also Back to the Future 2 and 3 were shot back to back. But LOTR was unique in that they would film scenes from all 3 films throughout the shoot
Salt is actually very important keeps the water balance of the cells and you'll die without it. Most roman cities were built around salt because it's so precious. A salt shaker was about a years salary during the middle ages.
Hence why the word salary is used.

I think a better comparison wouldve been Breath of the Wild, where you can defeat the gaurdians and it makes fighting Ganon much easier, but if you don't and must fight Ganon right away, its a much more difficult battle. Still possible, but much more difficult.
