I don’t care what anyone says (including members of Metallica) Load and Reload were amazing albums. I became a fan at 13/14 (1996) by my best friend in 8th grade and listened to the entire back catalogue, but when load dropped in 1996 later that year, I really liked it when everyone else hated it, and when they dropped ReLoad I loved that even more. At that time in 1996-1997-1998 I thought it was some of the most amazing music I’ve ever listened too. There so much pain and therapy in those songs, the loss of Burton, the battling of alcoholism and growing up in a broken home, really spoke to me at that time in my life.
I agree with you. I was 19 at the time and totally in love with them and their back catalogue. What I appreciated was that they always evolved their sound, not giving a f*** about fan services (in contrast to other great bands who relied too much on copy and paste). What I liked about those albums is that there was the same rage, only suffocated. This created a constant tension, which sounded as heavy as Master of Puppets. If I have to find a limit in that session, I just think they kept too many fillers. If they selected the best 10-12 songs, that would be a great album. Unfortunately, too many metal heads don't cope well with sound evolution, and those albums were not well understood. Said that, I think that both the albums were way better than Death Magnetic, which heavily relied on riffs from the thrash days in the 80's. In that album, the only song that surprised me was the one that I would expect to be the least original: The Unforgiven III. I thought they would recycle again the theme, instead they created something completely new and great. However, with Hardwired they demonstrated to be still alive and creative, writing a bunch of great modern thrash songs, including that masterpiece named Spit out the bone.
The song that really got me into Metallica was King Nothing when I was around 10-11. My dad played the guitar and listened to a lot of metal, especially iron maiden, and he used to play songs like nothing else matters and enter sandman, so I was familiar with a lot of their music, but it was only really when I heard king nothing I was sold to that kinda music. I really love Metallica cause they have all kinds of different music. Some like some albums more and others like other albums, ya know. They have some fast hard pounding thrash like battery, some slower heavy songs like sad but true, some quiet songs like nothing else matters, some more heavy ballady like fade to black etc etc. That’s what I really love about Metallica... Whatever mood you’re in, Metallica has the music for it.

I'll never understand for the life of me how anyone could hear Fixxxer, or Outlaw Torn, or Bleeding Me and tell me they're not heavy. If you can't feel the heaviness in this then I don't know what to tell you.

Or fix this hole in a mother's son? Can you heal the broken worlds within? Can you strip away so we may start again? Tell me, can you heal what father's done? Or cut this rope and let us run? Just when all seems fine and I'm pain free You jab another pin, jab another pin in me Mirror, mirror, upon thy wall Break the spell or become the doll See you sharpening the pins So the holes will remind us We're just the toys in the hands of another And in time the needles turn from shine to rust But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
