The likely reason why Kyōraku got promoted is because he (along with Ukitake) were Yamamoto’s personal students and considered the two of them to be like his sons. So besides Unohana (who has her own job to do) they probably are the most senior of the remaining Captains. And since Ukitake’s health isn’t great, Kyōraku becomes the most natural pick to replace Yamamoto.
Also because Shunsui is generally the strongest after Yamamoto when using his bankai and definitely a more capable leader than Unohana even if she wished to be the captain commander

Kyoraku Shunsui as head captain...perfect choice ! At that point in time he is both the wisest and perhaps one of the most powerful captain in the Gotei 13...The warrior philosopher. His only weakness was the drive to do the job really...now it's different !!
that's right, Yamaji is a traditional person with honor but Shunsui is open-minded, he will try anything new even it's crazy to other people as long as it helps the situation!!
Sure! Name a better way to start your commanding career than willingly sacrificing your most powerful, experienced and versatile unit right after giving away 2 of your lieutenants and a captain to a place from which they may not even return... BEFORE THE NEXT F&CKING INVASION.
What's cool about Unohana's story is,that they always hinted this in the past. It were small hints but it was mentioned that she has great sword skills, that she used to be a good fighter and some characters got afraid of her from time to time or didn't want to anger her.
They told the head captain to stop teaching Kenpachi sword techiques after a single day, and back in the day of OG bleach, we saw why; a single swing of his blade with both hands on the handle is enough to create fissures in the ground, as we saw him do in Hueco Mundo.
Fun fact: aizen is down there. As stated in the databook Muken is limitless so to put into perspective he can easily be as close as another continent and as far as another solar system 😅
I don't know if it could be considered forshadowing but I love how everytime they showed someone having conversation with Unohana they got scared by her smile and were scared of her now it would make sense of how much scary she legit is .
While some may have felt like this plot twist seemingly came out of nowhere, Conversely throughout the series, Unohana was foreshadowed a few times despite her gentle personality and maternal figure of soul society. 1. Her braided hairstyle that she’s always wore at the front of her chest was to cover her scar. 2. She was the only one who saw through Aizen’s hypnosis and that he gave credit to for doing so back in soul society, fleeing from her knowing that if he fought her it would’ve been trouble, a death match for him. 3. Back in Hueco Mundo, the clean up squad of hollow soldiers known as the Exequias fled from her instead of putting up a fight knowing they didn’t stand a chance. 4. Shunsui and Ukitake as senior captains were shown being scared of/creeped out by her in the turn back the pendulum/Vizard flashback arc, as well as others being nervously afraid when she makes an eerie serious smile, which was only meant to be seen as a gag initially. 5. She the 2nd oldest after Yama and last remaining member of the OG 13 court guard squads just now revealed. Needless to say it was a plot twist and a half that was subtly built up as a lady of the sword as a great character that just happens to be a lady: A Blood Prime Death Goddess. Fun Fact: Unohana is the only female character in this series with no fan service, that is beneath her. An Epitome of a woman above men, the kind that makes the best out of them, just like Krista Sudmalis who invented the GigaChad.
Nanao has no fan service. Hinamori has no fan service. Isane has no fan service. Isane sister has no fan service. Orihime best friend has no fan service. Rukia has literally one fanservice moment and it was cut for the anime. Hiyori has no fanservice. Soi Fon doesnt have fanservice. Seems to me Bleach is full of female characters without fan service.
Funnily enough, if you look at the beach cover in bleach. Unohana is there in the background which would count as fan service, also her braid is different there so her scar would have been in view. Might mean Kubo didn't have Unohana's story planned out at the point of drawing that cover initially.

8:05, Aizen is locked in muken which is where they are fighting, an infinitely large space, im not suprised they didnt see aizen because its infinitely large. Theres one door into muken and im not sure how far or close aizen is in muken or if he has any means of moving in any direction as hes sealed. It could be possible aizen was moved to a further location so he wouldn't interfere. Yachiru and Zaraki are fighting because they both hold the title of kenpachi still, to gain the title you must kill the previous user so technically no kenpachi from yachiru has been a true kenpachi and the other reason is a spoiler.
Especially on the part where Renji withstood Tenjiros punch 🤣😂 They're downgrading Renji so much 😂🤣 I can't wait to see their faces when Renji start to step in , in the battle field. 🤣😂🤣😂
"Yachiru" was foreshadowed as far back as episode 40 of the anime, where Zaraki meets gives his now lieutenant (Kusajishi). After discovering that she too shared the same pain of not having a name to be called on, he gave her the name "Yachiru" the name of the person he respects the most. There's also the fact that everyone was scared of her which most people passed off as a running gag and the fact that her chest was always covered even in the beach episode.
The First Kenpachi, she looks so cold, a complete 180 from her supportive/medical look lol. But it was already hinted that she was a problem, she was part of the original Gotei 13 after all.
You must’ve forgot but Kyoraku and Ukitake are both students of the last head captain & super close like his own grandchildren basically but he was closer to Kyoraku I think & though he goofs off a lot he actually has a good understanding of what it takes to be a captain.
Remember back in SS arc Yamamoto claimed how Shunsui and Ukitake were the oldest after Unohana, and became the first Captains through the shinigami academy and he even trained them personally. They have always excelled and been very powerful, not to mention them going head up against Yama and Shunsui taking on and beating Espada #1. It’s pretty clear to see that he is one of the strongest of the current Gotei and he’s most suitable for resolving conflicts, like the other Captains arguing last episode, or showing leadership when Squad Zero arrived. He’s a goof ball but when he’s serious; he’ll be ruthless. It always seemed obvious to me that he would take the role of Commander.

BOTH KENPACHIS are insane they killed their enemy so fast that they want to savor fighting longer so they find ways to prolong it .... for the first its healing her opponent while fighting for Zaraki its giving a handicap like using left hand and bells and sealing his power thats how much they enjoy fighting.
it's been awhile since i read the manga, but I think she actually kills Kenpachi and revives him again and again. every time he almost dies he gets stronger because he wants to fight more, so it makes perfect sense to put a healer against him to ramp him up fast.
seeing Roshi smiling knowing damn well whats coming up while Lupa and Shera try to figure things out is priceless. OOh man they aint ready for whats coming with Kenpachi.
Notice the blood on Unohana's face after Kenpachi snapped back from being stabbed. She healed him right before he died and acted like nothing happened.
The scene with the kid Zaraki Kenpachi is from the times of the first generation of the Gotei 13, back when Unohana(Yachiru) was still the first Kenpachi. It's implied that Yachiru Unohana was never defeated for someone to become the second Kenpachi. She simply changed occupation(stopped being the Captain of Squad 11 and become the Captain of Squad 4(the healers)) and the next best swordsman became the second Kenpachi. And yet, a kid Zaraki managed to injure her while she was in her prime (I mean, Zaraki still lost back then, but he was the first person to actually manage that against Yachiru). In a way, considering that no one ever actually won the Kenpachi title from her, all of the subsequent Kenpachis have kind of been fakes. And the only one that Unohana considered as a true candidate was Zaraki.
@@matthewhelland9258 I don't think what you said have anything to do with what I talked about in my comment. To summarize my comment in points: -The flashback was from back when she was still the first captain of squad 11; - She fought kid Zaraki and won (and gave him the eye scar), but she got injured in the chest; - She never lost her title from being defeated, instead she left it behind her and the next best candidate in the Gotei 13 of the time became the second Kenpachi. So, what are you talking about?
@@matthewhelland9258 Wait, I think I realized what you mean. Are you commenting on me said that she was in her prime when she fought kid Zaraki? If so, when yes, she didn't use her shikai nor bankai against kid zaraki. Heck, her shikai isn't meant for combat at all, and her bankai is for annihilating the enemy. So yes, she fought kid Zaraki in her base form, which is how she fights most of the time, with most of her power coming from her zanjutsu, aka her capabilities with the sword, with every other powers she has being only there to support and her swordsmanship being the core. However, I don't understand how her fighter kid Zaraki in her base form means anything when it comes to her being in her prime at the time. Perhaps you think that going Shikai and then Bankai increases one's stats, but that's a misunderstanding of how zanpacto work. Not all zanpacto have forms that boost the user's stats. Ichigo's does do that, but Unohana's does not. In other words, Unohana's physical and Reiatsu capabilities are the exact same regardless of if her zanpacto is in base, shikai or bankai mode.
Just in case you're wondering how far back this was being implied: The leader of Aizens Execution squad (or rather the entire squad) was tasked to take on any shinigami regardless of their power. Ichigo was known as a force to be reckoned with at the time and the squadleader attacked him with no hesitation whatsoever. However when he first met Unohana in Las Noches and she told him her name that same guy ordered his entire squad to retreat in an instant while looking visibly shaken. It seems like even Aizen was making sure no one provokes her/forces her into combat so Unohana will remain a pacifist instead of becoming an active force and wiping out his people.
“Is this where Aizen’s locked up” “No, hell no he’s not down here.” Well he actually is down there haha. Him and a former Kenpachi if I recall correctly
Seeing the scene between Kenny and Ritsu animated after so many years is just 😢, gosh I missed this anime so much and they just pulling the heartstrings.
Kyoraku was the clear choice. He has the experience. He has the power, and the clear head needed for command. And he was trained and raised by Yama himself.
Ive waited soooo long to see this glorious fight. They made retsu a complete monster, cant wait for next weeks episode to explain what happen to kenpachi xD.
Definitely not a random pic the three captains that have been captains for over a hundred years are unohana Shunsui and ukitake. The latter two were the first captains to graduate from old man yamas School and were the first two captains promoted from that school. Obviously unohana is not going be for the reasons detailed in this episode. And since he was the one that old man Yama basically raised as his own son, definitely the wisest. But also willing to think outside the box clearly. It's less that he's a random pick more than the obvious choice.
Remember when Unahona went to Central 46 to confront Aizen in the first arc and he teleported away? She was about to catch a body and stop the entire Aizen war storyline from ever happening.
14:12 Shunsui becoming Head Captain isn’t really random in my opinion. I believe he’s the oldest one there aside from Unohana & they’ve shown multiple times that he had a close relationship with Yamamoto
Go back to the Soul Society arc and you'll notice Squad 11 members were all scared of Unohana, even in Hueco Mundo arc, Aizen's execution squad did not want to fight her, as soon as she appeared, they all left, they did not want no smoke with her, It was always foreshadowed, even her name "Retsu" means someone with a violent temper.
That’s pretty much a spoiler.. but anyways it was nothing really special in the manga just like Ichigo’s new bankai… But well kubo had to rush it so can’t blame
Kyoraku is the best choice for Head Captain if you take into consideration that he is one of the oldest captains. He has experience and he was among the first students of Yamamoto to become a captain. Ukitake (squad 13) was also a contender, but his illness is an impediment
he isnt crying because he is scared,he is crying because he doesnt want to die without defeating her at least once, thats how much he adores and respects her
Shows you don't know how to pay attention. He wasn't crying cause he was scared. He admires her so much and the realization that he might die before he has a chance to defeat her since he lost to her the last time is enough to make him cry
The lore about the past Kenpachis was always super fascinating to me. Even in the manga we only ever learned about Unohana being the 1st and Zaraki being the 11th. Technically we got an image and a name of the 10th Kenpachi (that Zaraki killed) but nothing beyond that. There was also a light novel after the manga that expanded on both the 7th & 8th Kenpachis who were both insanely busted characters, but there was never any real confirmation if they were actually canon or not.
Earlier in the series, Zaraki Kenpachi once said that he named Yachiru (the pink haired girl with name) after the name of the only person he ever admired. Yachiru Unohana is the one person Zaraki Kenpachi respects the most (and he recognized her immediately when he joined the Gotei 13).
Lupa saying "You need a blanket man?" because in his mind Zaraki was dreaming, but he actually was just a blink away from death. The reason why only Onohana can train him is because she's the only one who has the power to kill him and heal him. That way he can become stronger each time he "dies" and comes back to life.
@@ProdigyPPoet not spoiler my man. Just saying what happend in this episode but Lupa didn't catch it. If you really want some spoilers let me know and I can show you what spoiler really is.

And the thing about Unohana is, her shikai is a flying manta creature with healing stomach acid. It can't fight. Her only combat options are base form and bankai, and we all know how that would have turned out. If she'd gone out to fight she might have killed a few scrubs like Kenpachi and Yama did, but she'd almost certainly have been clapped by one of the heavy hitters like Yhwach or Haschwalth (blond dude who broke Ichigo's sword.).
Lmao sheera's like "shut up about that wok" 😂😂
Fun fact: aizen is down there. As stated in the databook Muken is limitless so to put into perspective he can easily be as close as another continent and as far as another solar system 😅

Bro advocated for a wok for the longest just for Sheera to be right about not using it💀
While some may have felt like this plot twist seemingly came out of nowhere, Conversely throughout the series, Unohana was foreshadowed a few times despite her gentle personality and maternal figure of soul society.

It always seemed obvious to me that he would take the role of Commander.

it's been awhile since i read the manga, but I think she actually kills Kenpachi and revives him again and again. every time he almost dies he gets stronger because he wants to fight more, so it makes perfect sense to put a healer against him to ramp him up fast.
seeing Roshi smiling knowing damn well whats coming up while Lupa and Shera try to figure things out is priceless. OOh man they aint ready for whats coming with Kenpachi.
Notice the blood on Unohana's face after Kenpachi snapped back from being stabbed. She healed him right before he died and acted like nothing happened.
Zaraki named the child he met Yachiru after the only person he ever admired.
Yeah, but I'm pretty sure she only fought him in base form.
@@matthewhelland9258 I don't think what you said have anything to do with what I talked about in my comment.
To summarize my comment in points:
-The flashback was from back when she was still the first captain of squad 11;
- She fought kid Zaraki and won (and gave him the eye scar), but she got injured in the chest;
- She never lost her title from being defeated, instead she left it behind her and the next best candidate in the Gotei 13 of the time became the second Kenpachi.
When Zaraki learns the name of his zanpakuto it's gonna be epic especially when the other "Yachiru" reveal thing happens.
“Is this where Aizen’s locked up” “No, hell no he’s not down here.” Well he actually is down there haha. Him and a former Kenpachi if I recall correctly
Imagine if Yamamoto send her fighting Quincy earlier. She would wipe the floor.
Also all the zero squad members save monk make the prototypes of something that then gets later developed upon
