Mixing Colors: How to Mix Purple

- Let’s learn how to mix purple without getting a muddy brown. Mixing colors for painting requires knowing which colors to select, understanding the tinting strength and color bias of your paints and how to properly mix paint using a palette knife.
In this color mixing tutorial, we will be mixing acrylic paint colors and discuss how to mix a TINT by mixing purple and white for each mixture. Although we’re mixing acrylic paint here, these tips apply equally to oil and acrylics as well.
Be sure to mix EQUAL AMOUNTS BY VOLUME when you start so you can better understand which colors have stronger tinting strength and may overpower other colors.
At the end, we compare a prepackaged violet acrylic paint color (quinacridone blue violet) to the 6 violet shades we mixed.
You may want to use the example at the end of the video (22:36:30) to make your own violet colour mixing chart to refer to for future paintings.
::Glossary of Terms::
Tint - any color mixed with white
Mass Tone - pile of color, large mass of color - in mass tone sometimes to get a read on what the color bias is, especially dark mixes like the purples in this video
Undertone - to view the undertone take your palette knife and scrape your color back to reveal more of the nature of the mixture - it is more warm or cool? Evenly balanced?

Thanks so much for this. A few years ago I got a paint set from Liquitex designed for mixing, and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get a rich violet using Quinacridone Crimson and Phthalo Blue Green Shade. Gradually I figured out that the addition of the Red Shade variety did a much better job. And judging from your demo, Ultramarine Blue does, too.
Glad I could help! Interesting that they put the green shade in there. Maybe because it makes a better green? I have always lean towards the phthalo blue red shade. In fact I’ve been downright addicted to it at various times in my practice.🤣🤣🤣

Imagine my delight to have this show up yesterday! I looked for the last thing that showed up - it was a whole year ago! Sigh. The algorithms are off for me, it seems.
I LOVE color theory/mixing/paint-smearing!!! I have never tried the Quin blue violet! Years ago, I had some purple/violets that were fugitive, so when I got some Dioxazine Purple, that's where I stopped looking! LOL! I can be such an art-supply addict that I have to restrain myself.

What's wrong with using dioxazine violet?
For me, absolutely nothing! In my book, no colors are off limits. For me, color is all about context. Where, how much, what is it next to?
Cadnium red has yellow in it you have to use cool red
I’m curious what you mean by cadmium red having yellow in it? Cadmium red is a single pigment color. There are no other pigments in it. In the Monsell color system, it is in the R (red) column, not RO (red orange) nor RP (red purple.) meaning it has neither a warm nor a cool bias.
