  • Yoshiko Yamaguchi sang two of her best known hits in this movie:
1:04:40 - 1:06:35 Candy Selling Song (Maitang ge) - faster version
1:11:10 - 1:15:10 Candy Selling Song - slower version, high notes at end of song
1:25:00 - 1:27:50 Quitting Opium Song (Jieyan ge)
This is the famous Chinese 1943 film Glory to Eternity (Wanshi liufeng) 万世流芳.
Yoshiko Yamaguchi (Li Xianglan) appears prominently in it, singing the hit songs which brought her fame throughout China. In this movie you can see why the beauty and singing of Li Xianglan captivated Chinese film-goers, even though many suspected or knew about her Japanese roots.
1942 marked the centennial of the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing, which a humiliated entity called China was forced to sign following defeat by the British in the Opium War. The film was thusly named Glory to Eternity to memorialize the exploits of the heroic Lin Zexu in his struggles against the British while fighting against the pernicious drug effects of opium.
The film was produced by Zhang Shankun, a well-known figure at the time, assisted by top directors Bu Wancang, Zhu Shilin, and Ma-Xu Weibang. The hero of the film was played by leading Chinese actor Gao Zhanfei, the two heroines by Chen Yunchang and Yuan Meiyun. Li Xianglan and Wang Yin rounded out an outstanding assemblage of the best actors of the time in wartime China.
Chen Yunchang's character devotes herself to developing medicines which combat the harmful effects of the opium. In the final scenes she leads a resistance movement (much like in Mulan joins the Army) and is mortally wounded in battle.
The Chinese government has suppressed the showing of this fine film due to it's participation of Japanese film interests. Hopefully time will show that this film really belongs in the pantheon of great historic Chinese films, made during the tragedy of WW2.
Unfortunately, the last twelve minutes of the film 'hung up', so this segment will be uploaded separately, as Part 2 - Glory to Eternity 1942 Here is the link:
