- Song at Midnight (simplified Chinese: 夜半歌声; traditional Chinese: 夜半歌聲; pinyin: Yè bàn gē shēng) (also known as Singing at Midnight or literally Voice of Midnight) is a 1937 film directed by Ma-Xu Weibang. Often referred to as the first Chinese horror film, Song at Midnight is a remake/adaptation of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, though the film injects a significant political subplot involving the leftist revolutionary movement to the original story.
The film stars Gu Menghe, Zhou Wenzhu, and Jin Shan as the disfigured anti-hero Song Danping. Ma-Xu made one sequel to Song at Midnight in 1941 during the war. Both films resurfaced in the West at the Udine Far East Film Festival in 1998.[1] Since then, the film has been shown at various film festivals around the world, notably at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival's "Secret History of Chinese Cinema" retrospective.

夜半歌聲係民國二十六年的作品，由胡萍，金山，顧夢鶴主演，馬徐維邦導演，該片打光不好，黑暗一片，看不清楚，同年出品經典名片馬路天使，由周璇，趙丹主演，則沒有夜片的缺點，馬片看得很清楚，馬片及夜片均在七七事變以前上映，看夜片使我想到民國五十二年邵氏黑白大銀幕古裝武俠片源，由樂蒂，丁紅，金漢主演，也是銀幕一片黑，誰打誰都看不清楚，看夜及原片很難過，眼睛受罪，是不是可以數位修復，利於保存，
民國二十六年夜半歌聲完成上映，民國五十二年邵氏黑白大銀幕夜半歌聲上下集完成上映，該片由樂蒂，李香君，范麗，唐丹，趙雷，張沖主演，民國七十八年，彩色大銀幕夜半歌聲，由張國榮主演，巧合的是每隔二十六年開拍一部，從黑白小銀幕到黑白大銀幕到彩色大銀幕，技術的進步，

I saw a listing for a screening that apparently happened in 2017 or 2018, so allegedly it's being held in some vault or something.

They should do a color version for this movie, if possible
They did a remake a few years ago in China called THE PHANTOM LOVER in English and another during the 60's- I don't know if the 60's version was in color.
Adding color to a film is like painting over a great work of art. Blank and White film making is an art form unto itself.
I wouldn't agree with you. This is the beauty and history of the black & white films. It is better to add subtitle though.

No. None of this movie is in color. It's a ghost and horrify
movie and the black and white version is more suitable than
colored!! I like the one made by the Shawn Brothers in Hongkong.
