Can we appreciate how Appa just skipped Long Feng across the lake like a stone and then immediately flopped down to cuddle a bunch of children that he's been really missing 😭 The "camera" work when Iroh is giving his speech is amazing. When Zuko was about to throw down his sword it slowly panned to the left not showing his scar. Because his scar represents the destiny his father forced upon him. The irony about Jet's death is that despite all his mistrust and hatred towards the Fire Nation and their conquest and destruction of the Earth Kingdom, it was an official of the Earth Kingdom government who brought him down. He tried being good, he tried doing things the right and lawful way, he thought he was helping people by warning them, in the end he was right in his assumptions, and it was his own nation that put him down for it. Just like how Zuko was shown greater hospitality by Earth kingdom citizens than his own people in the beginning of Book 2.
I have so much respect for head writer Aaron Ehasz as well as the rest of the writers, directors, and every other person who played a part in creating this series and making it the masterpiece that it is (who, unfortunately, very often get overlooked because of the big fat "Created By" title card...). Credit and praise where so much credit and praise is due!
"I'm more than just an earthbender, I'm a vibesbender" - Toph 2024. And Ben saying "I'm sorry I can't control it, I'm a Gemini" right before was so out of line 💀So Laogai is a short way to say "laodong gaizao/劳动改造" which means "reform through labor", and Laogai is the name of the system of prison camps that's been implemented in the People's Republic of China. These camps used forced labor and ideological study sessions to convert opponents, similar to how Lake Laogai was used here. Joo Dee's design and personality was based on Miken Wong, the line producer for the show. Joo Dee's name comes from 주둥이, a Korean term to call someone who has a big mouth. The Dai Li on the other hand were named after Lieutenant General Dai Li. Dai Li was a member of the Republic of China and served as the spymaster head of Chiang Kai Shek's military intelligence agency, the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics, between 1928 and 1946. The Republic of China would flee from Mainland China in 1949, leading to communist victory. The Dai Li's costumes were modeled after the government agents, or Mandarins, of the Qing Dynasty, which replaced traditional Chinese government clothing with that of the ruling Manchu ethnic group. The Qing Dynasty was toppled by the Republic of China in 1912 when Empress Dowager Longyu abdicated Emperor Puyi's throne on behalf of Puyi (who was just six at the time).
I think this episode of Avatar (and those leading up to and following it) are the best for showcasing the skill the writers have for intertwining all of the meta-plots into one bigger overarching whole so well. The Ba Sing Se arc is only a handful of episodes in Book 2's run, but still manages to contain multitudes, and that's something very special to manage in just a few short episodes.
Per a stage hypnotist I saw once, that IS how hypnosis works! You're apparently able to snap yourself out of a hypnotic trance by refusing to do what a hypnotist suggests. They can't make you do anything you're unwilling to do.
Iroh pointing out Zuko could’ve easily died at the North Pole… I think Iroh feels that deeply, he almost lost him two times in a row and here he goes risking everything again.
Right, Zuko is like a son to him and he can't bear to lose another one, and he knows his little brother needs to be stopped, but it has to be by the Avatar, not him, or it won't really bring peace.
If someone wants to know, In Chinese, hao can be many different characters. The word yin hao should be yín háo(银豪) which means 'sliver hair' it is a type of green tea. The leaf is covered by small sliver hairs which earned its name. The word good is 好 hăo, which is similar pronunciation but not the same. The yin in yīn yáng is 阴 yīn, again, similar pronunciation but not the same and very different characters and meaning. yīn 阴means negative, shade, conniving or genitals😅. yín 银 means the colour sliver, the metal sliver or money/currency.
Funny thing, I actually read online that the creators actually wanted Longshot to aim his arrow at Jet originally - putting him out of his misery type-situation. But ofc, that was a bit too dark for a "kids" show, so they changed the scene to Longshot just awkwardly standing guard. Source: trust me bro, but maybe others can confirm!
6:10 it’s not his fault he’s not a peasant, I didn’t even pay for the house itself, and it has 2 floors and everything, all to my family. Zuko grew up in a palace, he wants his palace and HONOOOR back. I relate, that sounds much nicer than an apartment and a life of peace. Who even likes peace? I prefer wa- there is no war in ba sing se
Not to kill your tea buzz, but honestly, personally, I got into ignoring ingredients of food and drink a long time ago. I don't need to know what's in whatever I eat. The only thing that matters to me is if I like it or not. Like when someone tells me something is "good for me" using a tone of finality like they just dropped the mic. If it tastes bad to me, I don't care if it makes me immortal. I won't eat it. Saying it's good for me will not change the fact that it's nasty AF. lol Also I'm not really capable of discerning individual tastes and recognizing them. If something tastes good, I'm not gonna go "Ooh that's the sage I'm tasting.". I just don't know what safe tastes like. lol.
Recently heard that Michael and Bryan left the Netflix project. I would like to know the reason why. Does it mean too many changes are being made that don't like? Are we actually getting another M N S type disaster being shoved on us disguised as our beloved ATLA? I had high hopes with Michaela doing her thing, but now I am actually scared.
This show is going to be more serialized than the original show. Season 1 is only going to be 8 episodes but they’ll be an hour long each. With that change, there’s bound to be certain things that need to be changed around to fit that medium better. I believe that with some of those changes, Mike and Bryan were just not willing to budge. Honestly as long as the heart of the show is in tact and the characters and their arcs are accurate, it shouldn’t be a problem.
The end of season 2 just feels like one big long episode to me. That’s not to say this one doesn’t stand on his own. It’s nice to finally figure out what’s going on, as well as nice to see Jet get a redemption arc before he’s “gone”. Zuko freeing Appa was also nice, and signifies a turning point in his character. Excited for the rest of the season.
Jet is an extremely tragic character. In a different show he would be our protagonist. A young mad who watched his parents burn to death at the hands of an imperialist colonialist army. He dedicates his life to heroically fights back and protect the citizens of his home land. Unfortunately the enemy has far superior military technology. The only way to effectively fight the firenation is gorilla tactics. He is stopped by some foreigners (Aang, Sokka and Katara are also foreigners like the fire nation) who don’t like the collateral damage required to kick the fire nation out of this region. Jet reevaluates his methods. After traveling to the capital he sees what loos to be under cover enemy agents and tried to expose them. Instead he is captured and brainwashed and made to fight his friends. Another show Jet would be our lead and for the hates out their i ask you to really think hard about why you don’t like Jet. It is fine if you don’t but the why is most important to consider. We live in a world where the colonizers largely won. Even in arias that were decolonized the scars are very real to the people.

Zuko's wrong to frame it as wanting more, it's okay to want someone different than that. People aren't the same, and asking them all to want the same thing, no matter what that thing is, is a failure of empathy.
