I slowly started listening to her songs one by one because I ran out of money right when her album came out. I slowly started listening to all of them. At the beginning, I began with Love Train, & One More Time, Tension, & Padam Padam. As time went on, I began to fall in love with Story, Hands, Things We Do for Love, Somebody to Love, & Vegas High. There are songs with high note adlips that are meant to get your attention such as for radio play. There's songs that are for everywhere, but they are mellowed out. The Tension album has all of it. I can't believe he would say this about the Album. It's distasteful.

I respect your opinions, though disagree wholeheartedly. I feel this album is one of THE best she's ever released. There's a consistent thread of sound and production (which is excellent too) amongst the tracks to hold the songs together well (despite some clearly having an 80s and 90s influence). Having listened to the Deluxe version, I can see why those songs weren't included as they don't sound like they really belong with the others ("Somebody to Love" being the one exception - I think that would have suited the album well.) I understand Kylie has said there was no theme or plan for this album, and you know what? - I think given it's her 16th studio album, she's probably earned the right to "wing it", be free and let herself just create spontaneously without being limited by the contraints of some kind of framework. And by God, the freedom of that approach has really paid off with this album: carefree, catchy, spicey and a bit naughty... but more than all that, it's just FUN. It literally makes me just get up out of my seat and dance!
Having grown up watching Kylie first in the TV series "Neighbours", I've followed her right from her musical beginning with "Locomotion" (though preferred her first non-cover song "I Should Be So Lucky" at the time). I've bought most (but not all) of her albums over the years, dipped in and out of her now massive discography frequently, and even watched her live in concert at the Manchester 2002 Fever tour (amazing!) I wouldn't call myself a super fan (having much preferred Madonna in those days tbh), but over that (very long) time she's maintained a consistent quality and sufficiently changing musical creative ability to keep me interested. With Tension, and for the first time, I like nearly all the tracks on the album, something I can't say of any other. But, I will admit it took me a number of listens to it for some tracks to grow on me - "Padam Padam" wouldn't even be in my top three if I'm honest, though still very good. Personally, I've found that some of my now best loved albums I hated, or disliked, to begin with; I thoroughly recommend relistening to Tension several more times, and perhaps it will grow on you too over time, I hope so. Either way, thank you for your review!

Agreed. How can someone argue "disco" is one of the most cohesive albums in her discography, then argue the exact opposite about Tension which is constructed in a very similar manner? When he went on about the "tackiness" of the tension artwork, it immediately hit me that he simply didn't understand or identify the various references throughout this body of work. Also, even if this album isn't his personal favorite, It doesnt make sense to claim shes his favorite artist, then condemn the album that brought most notoriety to her career for the last 20 years. From both an artistic and commercial perspective, a fan would praise Kylie's choices here as the album direction was clearly successful with the broader public - even young people, which is unprecedented at 55 yo. Seems pretty delusional and selfish to expect her to abandon that in exchange for promoting conceptual work that won't likely appeal to the masses.

Totally Disagree, Tension is one of Kylie's best albums ever. Tension is also outselling the entire Top 20 combined in the U.K. Your no Kylie fan thats for sure, your opinion your entitled to but it sucks and means nothing.

Thank goodness we all have different opinions. And I think it's hilarious you dislike that part of the story song. I love that part for many reasons. This album is great. Kylie has paid her dues in the industry over decades and should be able to put together a piece of work however she likes. I think it's great she's done a bit of a mix and gave us an nostalgic vibe too. We have dance, disco, Kylie classics all on one album. Shes battling agesim in the industry too so I think it's fab padam really took hold for her and the album is a success.

There are some extremely cool songs on this album like tension, padam padam, love train and Vegas high. I didn't like her last albums that much, but the production quality of tension is just amazing. But Im a guy who loves bitchy, autotuned electronic pop songs the most in general. I'm glad she finally made an album that gives me exactly what I want from music

uhmm.... no. Tension is an amazing album! It is giving Robyn/dancing while crying on the dancefloor vibes. Lyrics are nostalgic and beats are fire. Kylie is slaying on this one.

The album is AMAZING!! I love it. Your rational makes no sense to me, but each to their own, i suppose.
Side note: I've been a fan since 1988, and I think tension is one of her better albums.

Appreciate the volume of work you've put into this, and the obvious joy in Kylie's music you have, but I really like this album. I've been listening to a lot of synthy, 80s inspired stuff recently and, behind Tension, absolutely love "You Still Get Me High", "Green Light", and "Vegas High".
Full agree with you on the ordering of tracks though. I'll be re-ordering this in my playlist.

This video is like when someone goes to a restaurant five times and always has a great experience - they love the food, the service and the vibes - but they never bother writing a good review. Then on the sixth visit they're not happy because they can't order something that isn't even on the menu, so they go online and leave a bad review because they are a big, stupid, whinging baby.

I do not agree with you. I like Kylie because of her nasal voice that's why I listen to her because I love that nasal timbre. And hold on to now sounds wonderful. Not because you don't like it. She's going to sound horrible

I appreciate your detailed review and do understand most of your comments. I agree that this album Kylie's vocals have been altered too much and this is going to be difficult for her to perform live. I love Vegas High , and Story and Somebody to love apart from the 2 singles but Hands Lovetain and 10 out 10 my least fav. Whatever you think of the album however the organisation and planning of this albums launch has been done with military precision unlike the botched previous 2 albums in terms of single release, videos and promotion.

OMG You hit the nail on the head and I agree so much
I love Kylie and what I love most about her work is how she always embrance the era she's in, both sonically and visually, specially from the 2000s and beyond. Aphrodite, Body Language, X, Golden, Disco, they all have a very distinctive feel and aesthetic, when you hear their songs or see their videos you feel the vibes, you get the point. That's why her tours are so interesting to me, because she manages to get very different things and mix them together cohesevely. Even in similar vibes, like in Light years in Fever, you still feel some distinction. In Fever I get a more futuristic vibe, but clearly them two are sisters.
Anyway, with Tension I don't feel that at all. I was expecting a vibe from the album, a vibe derived from Padam Padam and Tension, that are very similar in style. But then when Hold on to now began I got confused. And got confused through most of the album, because this back and forth of different vibes with no clear concept really made me uncomfortable. That's not the Kylie I know hahahahah What makes an album memorable is how well constructed it is. For the longest time I didn't enjoy Body Language that much, but I enjoyed how well defined the album was. It was memorable and iconic. Impossible Princess is VERY different from everything she has done and the album has this experimental vibe, I pretty much appreciate and enjoy.
But Tension? If I wanted a collection of different songs with no relation to one another I would listen to a playlist on Spotify. I was very disappointed, specially because I liked Padam Padam and Tension the single, and it was a new sound for Kylie. I thought this era would be very eurodance 90s throwback strong beats Kylie, but it was a miscellania. Very unfortunate.

I don't agree with everything you said- but I do with most things you said. Vegas High is the highlight. Glad you mention Kylie's vocals - there is so many parts when she sounds like too much helium was inhaled! I miss Impossible Princess time when she was singing effortlessly... Say Hey, Breathe...

  • @infsai

For me, this album is listenable but mediocare - on Disco, you could find many hooks and memorable melodies, and it was clear that two singles released prior wouldn't be the only ones, while on Tension I feel we got the best tracks before its release, and the rest of the album is literally filler, that isn't great, but isn't bad either.
Btw, I can't wait to see more of your videos!! Especially, if you want to overanalize songs like you did with "Everytime"!
