- Join us as we visit our friend Tom - the sales manager at Grange Land Rover in Swindon. He is trying to tempt me into buying a new Defender 75th Anniversary model ! While at the dealership we see a nice black Defender 110 V8 !
Here is the link to the first production Land Rover video I mention.

Great idea for the cream steel wheels - very retro & traditional, must have BFG All-Terrains.
I would also, go with -
> white roof
> agree rear recovery hooks
> fit a winch which somehow has the hook not hidden (like you see on new Defenders in Aus and the US)
> must have front recovery hook not covered
> traditional mud flaps - how can it be a celebration of old Defenders without mud flaps ! Didn't the old Defender come with the massive mud flaps as standard ?
> personally if I was buying it I would also want the vulnerable "deployable" tow bar replaced with the fixed muti-height. For serious towing, you can't always be sure that these swan neck style tow bars are at the correct height to keep things perfectly aligned - hence why you can get the muti-height fixed tow bar
By the way- you never did a follow up on the interesting video you posted ages ago about the fix for a deployable tow bar that got damaged off road due to a flimsy design of the motor - would be good to see a follow up video, did you manage to fix ?
I sure hope Land Rover listens about the battery drain and creates some sort parking/camping mode. But I am glad you remembered the battery jump starter. This has saved me multiple times after a camp leaving the backdoor open (while using the table). If anything a welcome insurance policy I won't be stranded.
Get the 75th 90!!!! I would love to see what you develop for it! Personally, I really like the Anniversary edition, but I would wrap the roof white or tan with that cloth roof! I think a protective satin finish would look good. And I completely agree about the silver bumpers/grill. It should be Shadow Atlas. And swap out the wheels to silver or dark silver alloy. Steelies would look AMAZING.
I hope they introduce a camping mode.
I sure hope you get a 90 of some kind so that you can continue to develop products for the 90. I too like the 75th anniversary with some reduction of the amount of green and totally agree with your idea to replace the green wheels with some steel wheels while you store the green ones in the shed.
I love the idea of the cream color steel wheels, and great big Camel Trophy decals on the doors and bonnet.
I saw a 75th anniversary 90 in Chester Land Rover. It had black wheels, gloss black extended arches. Black pack. Bonnet decal. It looked really good
Yep- Very informative Simon - thanks for posting!
Tharra a Lad 😆😃
My local dealership has taken the green wheels off of their 75th anniversary and replaced them with the matte gunmetal colour wheels of the same type. Looks substantially better! Their’s has the 110 sticker on the hood, snorkel, the larger plaster fender flares, roof rack. Love the 75th anniversary.
Brilliant timing. Just about to upgrade my D200 90 for a new one but think I'll wait for the '24 model instead with the flatter rear seats, I know you can remove the existing lower bit and achieve the same but it is a bit of a faff each time I want to take the GSD out to the forest.
Now they have redesigned the rear seat ( sort of). It’s time to redesign the 90s rear side windows to open!
Completely agree! I wish the rear windows popped out an inch or two at the back like a 90's minivan. Would be great for circulation.
I bought a DB power booster after my XKR battery went flat and left me stranded , Its now proudly in the boot storage of my 2013 D4 but I haven't needed to use it yet it does tend to go flat on it's own without use so I regularly top it up so its always ready to be used ..
Looks lovely to me! Like the green a lot ❤
On the whole the green is liked.....but somehow it just missed the mark.
I do hope that thet "King of Power" is as good as you say - just bought one (arrived this morning) and I *did* get the extra 20% off advertised. 👍
Your videos are always excellent - the only problem is that I am now spending lots of money with you - and more to come. 😉
outstanding!
Really - thanks for this video - I immediately went and bought the "The King of Power" which I keep in my D4. 👍
Hi Jon - i have used it a couple of time now and it has not let me down !
I saw an Urban 90 with classic dark green body and cream top just like back in the 70's and loved it. If I could afford an Urban 90 that is what I would have.
Simon , there’s an anniversary model at Guy Salmon in Wakefield, they did some of the changes you suggested, black wheels, rear bumper black etc
It doesn’t look any better 😊
Foldi up back seats? Revolutionary stuff. God that 90 is a design mish mash!
Another good video Simon 👍👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👏👏👏
Another interesting video 👍🏾
The green wheels are most definitely the biggest off puter then the silver lower rear panel. I think would be a bad move to buy a 90 pre the back seat improvement which is game changer. Let's face it the original design should never have made it into production.
In my opinion there should be a recall on all Defenders to have that battery drain problem sorted pronto. Using one for work close to home and in and out all day should not be a problem as probably would be. Camping the same. Destiny's Christmas present a life saver👍
Thanks for the look around at Grange. Just hope that V8 has the original exhaust with it for Tom's sake 😂
There is a guy on ebay ( a friend of mine ) that sells the original exhausts that Urban remove ! I have one to fit to the Black 90 !
@@L663 That's good because that Milltek exhaust just does not suit the vehicle. Ok for cruising around London but I reckon would drive you mad on the motorway.
Agreed re the green wheels on the 75th Anniversary. However I don't think you can fit the steel wheels as that model has the D300 and the bigger brakes so 18" wheels are no-go.
Always appreciate your videos guys. I run a disco 3 cause I’m not rich and many of your videos have gotten me out of a jam.
I’d hope to buy some disco accessories from you but not sure what the customs and duties would be post Brexit.
I’d do the 75 90. 12k to change with a little negotiation should be 8-10k. Cream steels and a cream roof, maybe some signature body coloured stick on rivets?
The battery drain is something which really bugged me, the amount of times I had to put the charger on was ridiculous. Exactly the same driving habits with my D4 and, as you would expect, haven’t had the problem once. Come on JLR, sort it out 🤓
Some great suggestions for the 75th edition, I have seen one with black urban wheels and just getting shot of the green there made such a huge difference.
Love the colour, they just went a bit mad with it. Maybe in 20 years time we will appreciate the genius of it all 🤷♂️
Also does the new 24 year model 90 with those rear seats finally sorted mean Si can come up with a retro kit 🤔🤓😎
Hi Simon, as you said, these 75 Editions are just not selling - My nearest dealership still has 3. When the new Defenders came out I thought they were underpriced - These 75 Editions are overpriced and a mistake on JLR’s part. I would ask if you buy one would you get a second one free! Personally, I would keep the black 90 as so much more desirable.
would look FANTASTIC with cream steelies...do it, this way we are the beneficiaries when viewing the channel :)
Just think what a foldable front passenger seat would do for loading long things. My nearly 6 year old Peugeot 3008 has that and it is very useful I can tell you.
Change the wheel colour or buy another set of normal silver/ grey (or whatever colour standard ones are) and then get those (standard colour) painted a gold to contrast the green.
Good afternoon Simon ,Hope all is good Love the Videos .Simon Regarding battery flat ish , " " 4x Overland " was spouting that his mate in Australia found his Defender battery went flat - completely dead .Later found as you said the Electrics are used 24 hr day ,and "Opening & Closing Doors " is using much Electrickery in the process .And your constantly opening doors for Trial ect . Just letting you know .But your a very chap ,and obviously you would realise this .--No - Alloys as seen on the Real Defender .Kindest Regards MC
You queried if the fabric sliding roof is just for Anniversary edition. I have one ordered on the 90 HSE I'm expecting soon. It was a £370 option.
Dealers have hundreds of the anniversary models and can’t shift them , hope you get a great deal if you’re brave enough to buy one 😊
Also interesting to see the fold flat seats in the 90 ,as I’ve been in two LR dealers within the last month and they both told me I must have imagined reading about it. I went and ordered another 110 instead 🙄
1,948 of them in total. Does seem like a lot to me 🎉
I guess "Limited" can be any number you like !
@@GonzoJamie if that’s the worldwide figure it’s still not many. That’s quite exclusive by Porsche terms!
They can't shift them with the reliability issue dominating everything.
Save your cash and buy one of the Lego Defender kits instead.. same colour and it doesn't matter about the rear seats not folding flat... :-) great video Simon - as ever!
Keep the green but cream roof and cream steel wheels, job done.
Simon, I've just bought one of those battery chargers here in Australia, hoping I never have to use it, but proof they work.
The new 90 rear seat folding is the same as my old Freelander 2 metropolis
I would replace all the silver (front and back), wheels and signature thing with black. And done. Like the idea of the gloss black bonnet, but not essential. I have an X and the gloss black bonnet does show dirt, handprints etc up.
One thing I do not like about our black 90 is you only need to look at it and it has finger prints and micro scratches... compare that to the stig that i can drive through a hedge and it still looks great !
My old Seat Ibiza from 2000 had rear seats that folded down like that new 90, i don't know why more cars don't. I easily got a new fridge in the Seat and it was only a small car.
I have to admit if my pennies stretched to a Rover of that price , it would have to be the INEOS Grenadier instead . Looking at the changes that you noted , look at what they want to charge you for a new one Are they much different to the " Stig" ? I must admit you are a great ambassador to the new Defenders , always speaking very highly of them too . Hope you decide wisely
I hope my videos come across as neutral.... I do somewhat give the Defender a hard time over the seats and the battery in this video...
Hello Simon, please make a bolt on non drill needed wind fairing for expedition roof rack
90 with the fully fabric roof has got to be the one! 11:17
The rear door arrangement is the main reason I have not moved from the Disco to Defender!
I would have thought they’d be painted British Racing Green
White roof would look great
Simmon do you now if you can retrofit the new rear seat base in the 90
Hello Simon, I just bought a 2023 Defender 90 in November. Regarding the lack of flat cargo space, Do you think its possible to just replace the rear seat bottom cushion with the new 40:20:40 pull-tabs bottom cushion only OR do you need to replace the entire row of bottom seats? Would the back rest cushion remain as-is, or would that also need to be replaced? I see you have taken the rear seats apart so I figured you would know the answers! Sure wish the salesman would have told me to order the 2024 D90! 😢
Ordered that we starter unit! $59.98 here in the states!
Get a 90 commercial! I need some internal Molle plates for the side panels 😉
90 Commercials are hard to find ! not sure what the back order list is right now !
Simon, sorry that green is hideous, which is probably why they can’t sell them! - I’d stick with your black defender 90.
The black Defender works well for our "towny" accessories.. like front spoiler / rear bumper light etc.
I think those 75th Anniversary models really need a white roof.
Someone just send me a picture with a white roof and it looks very good.
Great discussion on the pros and cons. Deffo needs some toning down😅 Any info on the green RAL code?

lol .. the convertible roof looks exactly the same as the Webasto sunroof i have on my 1972 rover 2000 ( except the one on my 2000 isn't electric )
Try a Off White Roof and Silver wheels/Off White/ Wheel rims as per original or Light Grey Rims
Hi Simon.
I had the same Problem with my 2020 110 D240s Defender.
I bought the used Car and one Day later the Battery was empty.
The whole Story is to long for this time.
It has 2 Amp per hour unloading.
But after three weeks, they found the Problem.
The Telematik System was the problem.
They changed it, and from that point my car works perfektly.
Hope that helps for your draining Problem.
Greetings from Ralf
And sorry for my bad grammatik english.
Hi Ralf - thanks for the comment.
I think the car is working as it should - it is just the Infotainment system draws too much power and stays on for too long.
Also they need to now power up the infotainment system if they detect the battery is on charge.
I love the green but the 75th anniversary edition looks too slick. You are right about off-white steel wheels but it needs a matching roof to reference a more classic look Defender 90. The metal needs to go it is hideous. Have you any way of finding out how many were made?
I am not sure how many were made - Tom at the dealership thinks it was around 1500
Someone at Land Rover needs to go look at the way seats folded in things like the Zafira and other MPVs, even the new 90s seat are awful.
I wonder if the 2024MY 90 rear seat can be fitted to pre-2024MY……….. I will be off to the dealer this week to find out!
Yes I was wondering the same but i guess its a big difference
Hi Simon, Do you know if LR can modify the rear seats in the 2023 model to lay flat like they do in the 2024 90? Thanks
Good Question
thinking LR are gonna have to repaint them a more sage green like the old series 2 and 3's
Buy the Defender 75th Edition. It looks epic....
I think I am waiting for the electric one.. I am currently looking for some cooler offroad stuff over new product. Is it possible to do some research on offroad bumpers for L663? I looked at Rhino, Milner offroad, rimmer brothers. Something super decent.
The problem with these super off road bumpers is the pedestrian safety... the UK law does not like metal bumpers on the front .... in Australia they make sense.
The best news of all is that they'e fixed the 90 'ski-slope'!! That really was a deal breaker for me. It's now back on the radar! Many say that the Grasmere Green looks better in person. I beg to disagree. It still made me feel sick. It may very well be the original colour of the Land Rover, but to me, it is the dark green that came after that is the real Defender colour. I don't think that the Grasmere Green suits the new Defender at all. As you said Simon, it is a very 'marmity' colour.
Luxury saloons role playing as practicle off roading utility vehicles. Why not of course but will there ever be a return to something that is actually authentic? For what I’ve seen the Ineos is not a lot better.
Remove the whole rear seat base in seconds on the early 90 and then seat jacks fold flat
Yes true but its not a morris minor !
Simon, you have tested mostly all the engines available in the Defender, for you which engine is the best? Thanks a lot for your great videos!!
still waiting for mine only have a choice of three colours my dealer said they have 40 of these sat there I said that's because the colour is crap anyway mine. is coming in black and im having it wrapped Antrie green with a white roof going to buy second hand steel wheels and put sensible off road Tyers on it
I’d have one but the price is out the box, my dealer can’t shift their 90, they even painted the wheels black which makes it look worse. Wheels should be Green or Silver.
I think you should keep yours and get the 75th as well. You need to develop new products anyway
I have a charger like you used, but by another mfg. Haven't used mine yet. Being a poor American I have to drive cheap Hondas that get 30 MPG.
Go for the naughty one, you know you want to!
Try Light Grey Rims on the 75th
Oooh that would work... with a grey roof ? nice idea ! something like the Audi Nardo grey ?
Hero of car land Rover defender ❤❤❤
I know you would come out up once the accountant works their magic but £12k cost to change still seems a bit cheeky. Apart from some colour change vinyls to cover the green bits there’s not much development potential that can’t be done with the black 90?
Simon, the handbook states that the Auto Stop is inhibited when the vehicle's battery charge is low, (amongst many other things).
Which is why i was super scared when my car stopped at the lights ! Its only a 10 minute drive and not sure it was fully charged !
Cream pepper pot alloys, cream roof, and as you say a 75 decal on the rear side panel, go for the 110, the 90 is lame with the rear interior
Black roof, black wheels. That’s all it needs
How good would it be to have the V8 with the PowerfulUK logo on the doors….powerful indeed 💨
Should the heritage have been V8 !... now that starts to sound interesting !
@@L663 now that’s a thought 👍👍
It’s horrendous. Far too much of the plastic is green. The wheels should be steelies from factory and I’ve never forgiven LandRover for those stupid window panels - if has genuinely stopped me purchasing one. The 75th should have been targeted as a base spec, rubber mats only spec that would appeal to fans of the original.
Some retro ‘County’ stripes would be cool.
What you need to consider is, are they going to call you up in 18months time and offer to buy it back from you, and what will they offer bearing in mind not many people are buying them which brings me to my next point. How many customers are you likely to get for all the mods your going to do to make it more tasteful..
Simon I think they made a mistake with the color of green it is the wrong shade of green they possibly should have gone with green that was used on the old classic 90
I’m sorry I can’t say I like the colour. Looks like it belongs at chessington safari park!
Simon has been attacked by the seagulls!!!! ;-)
Alas no painting the new underground car storage !
And we wonder why people in places like Australia and South Africa just can't trust these things to not get them stranded in the bush. Do the electronic engineers ever go camping in remote areas?
Keep the black one!
The king of power 😂😂😂😂
ROVER 3.9 Sounded WAAY Classier than that inharmonious bag o spanners
Nothing sweater than my 2.5VM in the classic.... joking !
rear seat design as per the Freelander 2.
Same as my 2 door Range Rover Classic ?
I think its the wheel colour that makes it a bit too much. If they were black, it may look better
Yes green wheels is too much..... think double denim...
Everything with an engine will be a collector’s item a few years from now….or bought and exported through a scrappage scheme
Lots of good ideas for those folk who can afford it! I have been driving LR's for thirty years and personally it saddens me why folk are buying these vehicles now!
V8. End of story 💪🏻
100% the V8 and I think the green is horrible 😂
Forget the colour schemes and sunroof. Fit a decent battery Landrover!!!
3 auto vehicles 3 emergency battery things 😂
New defenders are mamataxis to bring kids around all lease over here in the netherlands.
Whats the range on this vehicle?
Whatever you do to it, the colour will still be hideous. However, matt black fixings would work better than gloss black.
100 % correct
Vibe belts Birmingham can do seat belts in colour
Id go for the V8, the green colour is disgusting. No wonder they are having problems selling them, your lad was right they should have sold a limited number of the 75th anniversary ones
White roof. Silver alloys or white steelies.
Do it!!
Paint doesn’t make a rubbish vehicle good. Check out 4x overland.
