Get you some nice blue felt! I also think it will look better than black in the long run as you’d be surprised how much dust and lint will stick to that tray, especially if you’ve got pets around or you’re tossing it in your backpack frequently.
buy blue felt dude
Hahah that roll at the end! 😆 Great stuff, JP
I think the felt is better in the long run 🙂Great video!
Cool craft and tutorial
Felt is better, or fake leather, because you're right about the foam tearing up. But you can get some blue felt! It comes in every color. Might can match the lines, or do a navy so it stays cleaner.
Also, I want to make one of these.
It looks amazing! The only thing I'd maybe add is a few symbols from the old school maps to really sell the classic dungeon look and feel. like the black square inside a slightly larger white square indicating a pit, or the S on a line indicating a secret door.
This is my fav UA-cam channel. I love your stuff man.
The Dice has said it. This dice tray is 20 out of 20!
The tray is a critical success, as seen by your skill check :D
I think you made the correct choice with primer. Many this coats of thin are much better than thick coats of brush paint which would have been uneven.
Have you thought about adding little rubber feet instead of the felt on the bottom?
It would have the added bonus of not sliding anywhere once you set it down.
Blue felt, it will look amazing and your points on felt over foam are on point.
Wife gets onto me for finding things and suggesting they would be great for rolling dice in. Thanks for the video been wanting to do one for a while now.
Yeah some blue felt would look sick in there! But the black is great too! Can’t wait to hear more about your Monster of the Week experiences!
At first I was actually going to say just use the blue layer, before you even mentioned it, but once i saw the black layer added, I fell in love with it. It also made it easier to see the white numbers on the dice. My vote: Go with the black felt!
I like blue, but you do need felt… I would pick up some light blue felt if you can… The blue looks nice. Cool project!
More videos like this👍🏻
I love the look of the blue bottom! The black kind of overpowers the really cool design on the walls.
I just finished an extremely similar dice tray for my playgroup a few weeks ago! Went for a 12x12 wooden box and used dark blue/black felt together for the tray itself. Great work as always JP!
those little felt squares are interesting because i think they might not dampen the sound so much as just make it higher pitched. the table wont be resonating as much but because the tray is lifted off the table, it can resonate freely. the tray has that real nice high pitched sound whereas if you filled the entire bottom with felt it would create more of a bassy thud. i think both sound great but might be interesting to experiment and see what you like best.
Even better than either base option - I cut up an old mouse pad so I have a neoprene base in my rolling tray!
I use an oversized mouse pad and cut to fit. Love the zero tik sound and rolls for days.
Nat 20. Nice.
For your bag, eventually you will find some bubble wrap to roll it into, or maybe something like a dry cleaning bag, secure with a rubber band.
You should have used hatching. The filled in walls make it look like a crossword puzzle.
Wonder if you can trim a bit more from the felt around the edges to let the blue show through a bit. Might be a nice contrast and complement the dice tray walls. In either case, nice work!
Looks cool dude
You should find a way to produce them in mass quantities and sell on your shop. I would buy it.
I like the blue too. Why not just use blue felt above the foam instead of black.
Dopeness! I really dig that. :)
The black felt looks great, and will be more durable. I think the nat20 proved that. This is a great decorating idea.
I know it would be more work, but I'd like to see you do a little tableau around the edge of a dice tray, kinda like the panels on the Parthenon. Or maybe the Bayeux tapestry. (Hold on, I'll set up an etsy for you. lol)
Could always buy blue colored felt will last longer than foam especially
if you use metal or sharp edge dice.
You my friend are an awesome artist. I'd love to see a bunch of Make 100s on KS with stuff like this or other RPG things.
i’d buy it!
Felt is ok, but it will wear out faster than the foam. I've made a few dungeon/monster themed dice trays and use them constantly. The paint is wearing off faster than the foam sheet. As for the felt lined ones, well, they got scraggly real fast. The foam is quieter too and if you spill a drink on your tray, it does happen, the foam cleans up better.
felt looks better to me. i'd make the whole bottom felt too vice just feet at the corners.
Buy blue felt?
