Nobody is leaving any state due to crime. The vast majority of Californians and New Yorkers leaving their states are moving to other state’s urban areas that also have relatively high crime rates.
You are right about costs. Probably not about politics, as they are moving to other liberal cities. Not crime either, as much of the out migration is to the southeast where crime is actually higher. Certainly unaffordable housing is a big cause. But why now? Because remote work, which increased greatly during the pandemic, enables people to choose jobs they want and not live in high cost areas. It makes a lot of sense to make west coast salaries and live in low cost areas. And, it takes pressure off the housing costs for the west coast too, so it is a win/win in many respects. Except for people in places where these people have moved to that can no longer afford housing...
It isn’t just cost of living, it’s also insane policies that are pro-crime, anti-white (& sometimes anti-Asian), anti-male, anti-Christian, antisemitic, anti-sanity, pro-groomer, etc.
Before even watching I’ll tell you it’s because it’s unreasonably priced. California is by far the most naturally beautiful state and the weather is great so it should cost a LITTLE more than everywhere else BUT NOT TWICE AS MUCH. Sacramento is the “inexpensive” part of California. For what I pay to live in the hood here I lived in the suburbs in Vegas and Dallas. I’d be crazy to buy here knowing what I know. A good portion of Californians don’t have the financial freedom to go enjoy the natural beauty or get away from work and home very often. It’s sad. And people with power make it impossible to build the amount of homes needed to change things because it would drive down their own property value.
This is it. I can't afford to take a couple week vacation because the high housing cost and high gasoline cost just eat up everything. Sure there are these tech workers but they don't own homes either.
California is like the prettiest girl at the dance that everyone wants to dance with. It's a blessing and a curse. California will continually attract people from all over the world, as it has for decades, because it's known as the place to make your dreams come true. Similar to NYC, but with better weather and nature. It's why California is still the most populist state by far with the largest economy by far.
high cost of living, high housing costs, housing costing a lot, accommodation prices being too high, rents being too high, monthly house payments being so high. So many unique reasons people are leaving. /jk
Most places in California are actually quite safe compared to other places, like say East coast or southern U.S.. The crime that California struggles with the most is property crime and drug abuse, but that’s pretty much where it ends. And of course homelessness is a major problem across the state. Those trends are NOT linked with violent crime however. Aside from Los Angeles (which has high levels of gang activity) and perhaps towns out in the inland empire and Oakland with less than savory reputations. Much of California is does not have a reputation for violence. You are perfectly safe walking through most parts of downtown San Diego and even San Francisco and most other places. The homeless typically don’t bother you because they are nodding off on H. I can promise you it’s typically not like New York or any east coast city where you’ll be assaulted for no reason by some violent maniac or get caught in a gang shoot out like in Chicago.
It isn’t just cost of living, it’s also insane policies that are pro-crime, anti-white (& sometimes anti-Asian), anti-male, anti-Christian, antisemitic, anti-sanity, pro-groomer, etc.
no im sorry the obvious real reasons aren't acceptable according to what academics learn in college, for one they are racist so, anyway, they have their own theories though lol
I left due to high taxes and extreme crime as my hometown is ruled by gangs and we kept having power outages and the water was a brown color, Eventually I realized after several elections nothing was gonna get better so I packed my bags took whatever I could carry and left.
@@larrysmac Socialists running the state into the ground. Some cities have an app so that locals can keep track of (and thus avoid stepping in) human waste on the sidewalks. That pretty much says it all.
This is just an inkling of what I paid in CA. The property taxes on my 1700 sq ft home and it's 2½ acres in Sonoma county went up to $16000 a year. My PG&E electric bill averaged $400-500 a month. There are SO MANY MORE reasons, but now living in Prescott AZ, property tax is $1800 on my 1800 sq ft new home and my electric bill is $75 a month. I left not because of geography or microclimates
For me it was 100% the money. As a Gen X'er who grew up in San Jose and entered the workforce in the 90s, my goal was always to own a house, but sadly the steady increase in housing prices outstripped my ability to save up for a down payment. About 20 years ago, the houses in the neighborhood where I grew up were nearing the better part of a million dollars, and I knew that there would be no way that I could afford a house without moving to Tracy or Stockton. I ended up moving to Oregon and buying a nice house for less than a quarter of what it would cost in San Jose.
Good for you. I grew up in Southern Oregon, and after college moved to CA for the good job market. I am from a rural area, beautiful, but lacking in opportunities. I had a great career and retired 5 years ago. I thought about retiring back home, but I was fortunate to buy a home before they got ridiculously expensive, and the cold damp weather and I don’t get along like we once did 🤣 Good luck to you. OR is a great place to live!
I moved to California in 1976 when I was 20 years old and retired to Thailand in 2017. I lived in the San Francisco East Bay. I loved my life and career in CA but I had had enough once I had found someplace new and enticing. One geographic feature contributing to my decision to leave was the Bay Area fog. It was not an issue when I was young and at work but became unpleasant and tiresome retired at home. The warm tropical climate in Thailand immediately attracted me. Looking back at CA 7 years later I have to admit that the cost of living, if I returned, would be a barrier but more importantly, I think the CA politics and government and political divisions in the whole of the US is a bigger deterrent to my return. I think I will stay where I am. I have a beautiful new home, enjoy the lower cost of living, have access to great healthcare, and can enjoy a safe and peaceful retirement.
The political division nationwide is is basically those that don't want to make America into the sh!+hole like California has become and the woke that do. I grew up in Southern Cal in the 70's to the 90's. It sucks so bad now. Cali went woke, now is broke.

As a California resident, back in the mid-20th century, the default mode of city planning changed from walkable dense neighborhoods and grid-planned streetcar suburbs to car-centric suburbia. Public transportation was almost completely gutted out and the freeways began to be built. Housing was cheap and plenty from the 1950s-1990s due to endless suburban growth, but the suburban sprawl was soon constrained by the mountains that surround California’s largest cities. Still, people kept moving and the amount of housing built could not keep up with demand. Traffic on freeways became even more clogged (it’s always been this way since the beginning of the freeways themselves), and nowadays it’s quite popular to expand whatever current public transportation system exists in order to decongest the freeways. Also, last year to alleviate the housing crisis, single-family zoning was eliminated in an effort to provide more housing.
The single-family zoning “ban” isn’t what it appears…it allows property owners to split an existing parcel and build an additional structure on each, for a net gain of +3 units. But that’s a maximum; some property owners will only build 1 or 2 additional units. The number of property owners taking advantage of this won’t be enough to solve the housing crisis. And even with zoning opened up, single-family neighborhoods still cover huge swaths of CA cities and they’re not just going to be torn down to build high-rise condos…HOAs and NIMBYs will see to that.
That happened in many cities. The problem in the most popular cities in California, is that people from all over the world continually want to come here to try an make their dreams come true. It's a blessing and a curse.
California was in a drought for most of my adult life and I moved to Vegas in 2022 right before there was a bunch of rain in CA. Every time I go back to visit, from Sacramento to San Diego, it's so much more green and beautiful, it's really good for your soul. My bank account is doing much better out here in the desert though.
I think it’s mostly the high cost of housing. Most young couples and families, even with good dual incomes, could not possibly save enough for a down payment on a $1.5 million home, the starter price in my California county, Marin. Then the mortgage payments, taxes and insurance would be very high. Plus, the cost of everything else here in California, like fuel, transportation and food, is very high in this state. I know I want to move since the “homeless” made a huge encampment a block from my house, but when I sell my current home, I probably couldn’t get anything equivalent in other respects. Only the wealthiest can afford to raise a family here, especially if the mother wants to spend the pre-school years at home with their young children, I know I would. Many of us Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), boomers have an advantage, if we have inherited the assets of our parents, or received financial assistance from them while they were alive. But, we Boomers are in our 60s or older now, much too late to start families. I know my ex and I could never afford to have children, although we are both degreed professionals. We just couldn’t afford for me to not work full-time and our tiny cottage would have been too small.
Don't complain, and try to appreciate your unparalleled quality of life. In my 72 years, my career has taken me from MI, to NC, to CA, to NM, to OR, and back to MI. Now, not a winter goes by without regret for leaving CA.
My family left CA to the north east. CA is a beautiful place, but the costs were our primary factor for leaving. second was wanting to buy a house on a decent size of land, and in CA you need millions for that, or live in the desert, or live where there are fires. Instead of driving for 2-3 hours to get to the wilderness, its in my backyard now.
The northeast blows. I’m from that side of the country and i can’t stand how dull and uninspiring the terrain and environment is. Nothing compares to the majestic west coast
@@HeavyTopspin no one mentions about it in the comments because they ALL VOTED FOR IT, they are all responsible. Now they are spreading their communist filth to other states.
It's probably a pretty cool place to live if you're a liberal Democrat that gets elected to office repeatedly without any opposition as well. CA is a one party state and has been for 20+ years. Who else can you blame?
So it definitely isn’t because the rising costs of living, wildfires, lack of homes or concerning weather patterns? 💀 if you wanna politicize shit just say that.
Yeah sure that's why Washington is growing... You're a political hack. California has extremely high housing demand and housing cannot keep up with it. It's too expensive to live in for many. That's simply the reason... But go on thinking it's because of politics... Btw, California politics are nothing crazy compared to most developed countries. Far right wacko.
Alot of other comments have already stated what i wanted to say myself. Think the buffoons in Sacramento will order 4 million new apartments & condos to house more working class residents? WRONG! The people in rich areas will object. The farmers in the Central, Sacramento, & Imperial Valleys will object. Long-time residents will object due to many things, including traffic congestion. As for people that left, it's more than the high cost of living. Many companies like Tesla & SpaceX moved to Texas and took many of its employees with them. Those that moved to Idaho, Texas, & Florida did so for political & cultural reasons. Geoff, the politicians & their rich donors want to turn California into their own version...of Monaco or Dubai.
I agree with your conclusion. The people who own homes have become NIMBYs ADUs were authorized in some areas and the politicians got immediate push back from home owners about it's potential negative effect on their home prices.
Would just like to point out the people moving out of California for political reasons are on the extreme far right and are by far in the minority. They're also really damn dumb. It's a huge red flag if someone tells you're they're moving to Idaho now a days lol.

Simple-many think they can move to somewhere like Texas, support and vote for the policies they had in California, then expect it to be cheaper and better with zero consequences or repercussions.
It’s simple 🤷♂️ you’re too blind sided by politics to think that, it’s only affecting one state and that this isn’t the result of greed with huge companies influencing politics to make them even more money
Rent is the sole reason. In Metro Detroit I live in a zero crime suburb and pay $1150 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. In a zero crime suburb of LA or SF I would imagine paying $5,000/month. In more average neighborhoods around me you're paying more like $800-900/month. If you're doing really bad then you can probably find a place in the metro area for $200-300/month. You could say homeless people or mental illness or crime or politics but facts are facts: People can't afford a place they'd actually like to live in in California. Texas and Florida aren't far behind.
@@randomcommenter395 Not true at all. Glendale, Burbank, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and Pasadena have among the lowest crime rates in the US. Same over here in South Orange County. The homicide rate is below 1.0 here; it's a literal fraction of a person per 100,000 residents.
I grew up in California but moved away 20 years ago. Amazing state but it goes to show that terrible politicians can blow even the greatest of hands 🤦🏻♂️ Honestly, I sometimes wonder if they fail on purpose 🤔
Horrible government policies, high taxes, lack of school choice, extremely unfriendly business climate are all more significant than the cost of living - since much of the cost of living has to do with bad policy (save housing prices). California has no excuse - could be so much better. This state is a sadly in serious decline.

Well it has been Republican most of its history, and NOT everyone can have a ho hum job, yet retire as a millionaire (just because of the real estate appreciation). Some would be better off staying where they are.
Except that’s not why people are fleeing… CA’s population is still growing. People come from other places and it causes the housing prices to rise, forcing out locals who can no longer afford it.
Count me in the large group of people who have left or are planning on leaving. I absolutely *love* California, but unless you're making a tech salary or something close to it, or have inherited property/other forms of generational wealth, it is very difficult to get ahead here. Most people are already familiar with the incredibly high home prices and rents in the cities, but what's not talked about as much are the $5+ per gallon gas, the exorbitant energy costs (43+ cents per kilowatt hour charged by PG&E during low demand times or 53+ cents per kilowatt hour during peak demand periods), car registration costs that set me back $329 this past February on a 4 year old Honda Fit and now my auto insurance rates are set to increase to over $230 per month, despite zero tickets or accidents as a 41 year old. This is just the tip of the iceberg of all the extra costs associated with living here; I could list many more. I'll be relocating up to Washington state, which is still expensive-ish, but at least I'll be able to register my car for $68 and my auto insurance will be dropping down to $75 per month for the same exact policy I currently have here in California. Gas is a dollar cheaper per gallon, and electricity costs are 5-7x cheaper per kilowatt hour, depending on your utility provider. Plus my rent will drop by 2/5, even though salaries and job opportunities are quite similar. There are other serious issues here; the very lenient policies that only encourage crimes such as retail theft and auto theft/burgularies to flourish for starters. I will definitely come back and visit friends/family a few times per year, but as someone who has spent significant amounts of time up in Washington state , I'll definitely have a better quality of life overall up north. Washington state definitely has its issues too, but definitely not as many as here in California.
I left California in 2016. I was born and raised in Sacramento. The writing was on the wall and had been for decades. I couldn't survive financially out there without being rich so I moved East.

To top it off... I worked two jobs in my 20s and 30s and I live in an OK area and older non upgraded house. That's California... Beautiful weather though.
You really nailed it when you said that California doesn't build enough housing and that's why it's so expensive to live there. That's the biggest reason why it's so expensive, but not the only one. But many of the people who live there don't seem to understand basic supply and demand when it comes to home prices and rents and/or they don't care about the negative effects of not building enough housing as long as they've got what they want.

I think everything that you need to know is that they're attempting to impose a tax on people for leaving the state. Because everyone with half a brain who can, is trying to.
They are leaving from liberal areas to liberal areas, so politics are doubtful as a cause. But costs certainly are a cause. As is NIMBYism that is preventing building more housing, again greatly contributing to those costs.

As a California to Portland refugee, I'd say that politics ruins the state. It's not democratic leadership but rather the fact that cities aren't built to be lived in. Every single inch of developed land is owned by raging violent capitalists that must achieve maximum profit at all times. If you're not paying a lot in rent you're not located in a popular area.

I never wanted to leave California, I lived in the same zip code for 80% of my life and I loved it there. Part of the reason I left was high housing prices, I did not want to spend $1.5 million for a three bedroom house in a "decent" neighborhood. The final straw was the results of 20+ years of one party rule, the state is becoming a wasteland. I have never understood California voters, supposedly intelligent people who continually vote for a political system that leads to government control and the breakdown of society. It definitely got worse over the past 5 years though. I am just hoping that the Californians joining me in Arizona do not ruin this state also, it is teetering on the edge right now.
It's not just housing. I lived in CA for 16 years. Many jobs are also leaving CA - its much easier to find good housing and a good paying job elsewhere. The tax burden is also very high by leaving CA I got an effective pay raise due to the lower taxes. The same goes for the cost of utilities - I live in a colder climate and my electric and gas bills have gone down. CA also won't fix its freeways with mass transit. The freeways simply move way more people than could be moved by train and/or bus.
Oil is the building block for numerous products: petroleum-based products are used in electronics. From speakers and smartphones to computers, cameras, and televisions, most electronics need oil for production.
It's in way more than just electronics. Petroleum extraction is required for almost everything we use in modern society including pharmaceuticals. Go internet search how many hundreds of essential products we need it for, it's quite a surprise. Without petroleum we're back to living in the 19th century with no alternatives.
During the lockdowns CA felt like communist East Germany to me. My wife and I can't wait to leave this woke and overpriced paradise, and move to a free state for good.

I left in 2019 because the state essentially regulated me out of my family farm, taxed/fined me for the most absurd stuff and outside of that they do this to everyone else so everything is expensive and it just made it a real struggle to live there despite making decent money. Thankfully it's been the single greatest economic, quality of life and personal freedom upgrade I've ever experienced living in a more pro-freedom state. California covers a big area, but much if not most of it is uninhabitable mountains and deserts. The Bay Area is a good example of why it is hard to build enough housing. Most of the Bay Area consists of water and mountains. There is a large body of water called San Francisco Bay in the middle and a mountain range on both sides of the bay. In San Mateo County, where I live, the cities are squeezed between the bay and the mountains, with no room to expand. The only way to add more housing is to build high density housing on underutilized land such as surface parking lots and strip malls. People who want to live in a single family detached house with a yard are out of luck unless they have lots of money to buy one of those houses. The median home price in this county is $1.7 million. The only reason I can afford to live here is that I am old enough to have bought my house back in the 20th century when home prices were still affordable.
(1) When talking about population declines by state, shouldn't we convert numbers to percentage of population to start with? I haven't looked, but I'm sure your channel has already pointed out that the metropolitan area of Los Angeles alone is greater than like that of the ten smallest population states combined. So anyone saying that more people left California than any other state is purposefully misleading. (2) How many of those who "left" actually died from the pandemic, and thus didn't "migrate" away to another state. People like Ron DeSantis have tried to point out that California lost more people to Covid than any other state, again being misleading since by percentage of population, it's like in the lowest 15 of states. In fact, New York, the state that lost the most people since it was the epicenter of the first wave when we didn't know how to deal with it, is now lower per capita than most red states. (3) Could someone please tell me where these population figures are coming from? The U.S. census only happens once per decade, and I believe the last one was largely conducted in 2019. Can we say with any true accuracy how many people have left the state? Anecdotally, we know some who could continue to telecommute and keep their jobs left for cheaper housing and lower taxes, but that's all anecdotal, and I doubt THAT many were allowed to keep their jobs while moving out of state. Tesla moved to Texas, so that surely took some employees, but not all--and now Tesla has left Austin for some other location.
TLDR...🙄 Populations statistics come from a number of places not just from the US census. It come from tax rolls voter registrations many other things including reporting from companies on payroll taxes etc. You wrote a whole lot of nonsense just trying to cope with what you can't handle. Literally everybody including Governor Newsom, knows that people have been leaving California in droves. Can literally list endless reasons, not only taxes crime political atmosphere just to name a few. And it is a fact that they've lost population because they lost a congressional district they're not going to have the same amount of Congress people. They've also lost electoral votes because they've lost so many people. Do a little research yourself instead of demanding others because everybody else already knows

There's one thing you didn't mention about the rising housing costs that I've heard from so many people including my friend's mom who is a real estate agent herself. Another reason why housing costs have gone up is also because of pure greed from some of its residents. There's a lot of areas where there should be housing but it's just empty fields of really tall grass just across the street from a big beautiful neighborhood of houses. There's no reason there shouldn't be houses or apartment complexes in these massive fields but what's been happening a lot is that a lot of them richer more well-off citizens here have been so greedy and pushed back against any government plans to expand and build more housing and apartments because these greedy bastards who live in these neighborhoods that definitely could be expanded want to maintain the values of their homes by reducing the amount of extra houses. It's ridiculous because it's like why do you need to keep the cost of your house to be so high Are you actually planning on selling it anytime soon? I mean if you love living here so much and you're doing so well financially why would you even need to do that?
Been to California three times, I love it, best combination of natural resources and diverse climates unmatched by any other state. Big cities to beautiful nature. Nothing grows forever though and the same will happen to other fast growing states in the future. California has everything .
California is the cesspool of the USA. People live by the thousands on sidewalks and defecate in the open. Crime is closing down hundreds of stores each year. The cost of living is extremely high and the standard of living is extremely low. California's problems are due to the state and local gov't.
The presentation on CA's geography is indeed impressive. However, your assessment as to the "why" people have been leaving, is missing a crucial component. ..... it's 95+% *Politics* The Political structure and agenda of those in Sacramento, as well as the big cities of San Francisco & Los Angeles, is what has spearheaded the fleeing. Politics have turned the state into one of the worst for any business to start up, and why others are closing down. It's the politics that have raised taxes & subsequent cost of living, to such extremes. Then you add the political decisions that enable increased crime with little repercussions, and you get the max exodus, from what is clearly the most beautifully diverse state in the union IMHO
Home, sweet home ❤ It is expensive to live here, no doubt. But, home is where your livelihood and family are. If people think the grass is greener elsewhere, then go elsewhere. We’ve got too many people here anyway. Nice overview of the history, landscape and economy here. Good work, Geoff!
There is a lady at work who said she doesn't mind the high taxes and high cost of living. Sure her family has a paid for house in Palos Verdes. The elites don't worry about the high cost, it is just the regular people who have to suffer with it.
@@2Phast4Rocket We are just a regular working class family. Bought our home over 35 years ago and worked hard to pay for it. I honestly don’t know how a young family can break into this housing market today without significant help. If we were in that position years ago, leaving for a cheaper place to live might have been the best choice as long as that cheaper area had a strong economy. We have always been blessed with great jobs and opportunities here.
@foreverdreamwithinadream6871 Yes, the rich people in rich areas always do just fine. You’re right, that’s the sad truth. Los Angeles County is one of the most densely populated counties in the US, and it is pocketed with great areas, and shabby ones. All of those great areas are where the upper crust dwells, while the working class neighborhoods are more susceptible to the things we don’t like. It is not one size fits all! It sounds like you found a great place, and I’m sure your pocketbook is fatter for it! 💰
So many clueless CA haters on here can only parrot what they hear at their conservative victim support groups. I had a decent job at UC Davis, and a relatively affordable home in Elk Grove. We had to relocate to fulfill my ex's NHS commitment-a move I still regret to this day-especially when our $100K home is now valued at $600K.
I wouldn’t want to live there either. Would I pay $7 a gallon for gasoline when it costs half as much literally anywhere else in the United States. Those are Europe prices. And I left there for many reasons that is one of them. And high taxes like California has. I don’t like California’s high crime rates either.
How many people “from California” were born there? How many people born there have roots there further than 50 years? 80 years? If your family lived there before WW II, you are in a very rare situation. Now look at North Dakota. Nearly every resident has family roots from before 1910.
One answer: Cost of living. If you don't make over $100k/yr, it's difficult to have a roof over your head. There used to be new housing construction all over up until the 2008 financial crash, but not as much in the 16 years since. Homes rose nearly 100% in price. Meanwhile the tech sector kept bringing in new workers pricing out people born here with more lower class jobs who could no longer afford it. If you were lucky enough to have purchased a house decades ago, you get to cash out and move somewhere to enjoy your luck. But for people looking to buy a new house, the down payment is equal to a house in another state. Houses listed gets snatched up above sticker price. I disagree that crime has gotten worse. I've lived in California for over 30 years and crime has never personally me. If you are the kind of person who pays attention to it, you would think it has a larger effect than it does.
It’s true. We really need to get more housing units built here for regular working people. We need our lower wage earners to be able to afford to live, as well as the higher earners!
After 2008 with basically no interest loans they decided to almost double the size of new construction and go luxury only on renovations. They stopped building starter homes. That's the only thing that solves this, really. But yeah our crime stats are half what they were in the 80s. There's just more on video these days.

That is not true. The population has actually grown again lately according to the latest numbers. I live in California and I would choose to live here over any other state. It still has the 5th largest economy in the world and most of the high tech and entertainment companies are still based in the state. All those people who talk bad about the state must watch Fox News or something. There are a lot of states in worse shape.
Housing prices have skyrocketed because of lack of construction but that is because of the rampant increase in regulatory restrictions and the legal clout of NIMBY entrenched residents. Add the very high taxes, gas prices, insurance premiums and utility costs to the lousy union dominated public schools, skyrocketing crime rates and rampant homelessness and when Covid hit, CA’s super strict over the top restrictions sent families fleeing lockdowns, mandates and kids forced to do on line school long past other states. Any Phoenix area resident will tell you if the nightmare of being priced out of local housing by cash rich CA home sellers fleeing all of the above.
I lived in California for a year back in 2013, and though I loved it back then and it's a place with so much going for it, there's no way I'd want to live there today. It's mainly political - their incompetent government have absolutely ruined what should be paradise and turned it into a dystopian wasteland of crime, homelessness and hopelessness. It really makes me sad.
Another geographic factor is, in many places where California developed, there is not nearly enough water. So water hasta be brought in from someplace else, often to the detriment of the water source. LA has spent billions to bring in water from the Owens Valley and Colorado River. And they pay the Imperial Irrigation District (Imperial County), for water to be NOT used for agriculture. (Agriculture is the major water user in California). As a result, what could be productive farmland in Imperial Co. is sitting bare. And some landowners are using what could be farmland that could produce food for people to be used for Solar Farms.
Your comment about California not having water where the population is located is true. However, i think must of the West is like that. Look at Arizona which is looking south of the border for water. What about Nevada and it's lack of water. I however disagree that solar farms should be seen as a problem. Out of Europe they have found out that vertically and two sided solar panels can be used on farms. There is, I think, an ongoing study which shows that some crops can be grown beneath raised solar panels. If I was a farmer, not an agri business, and I could make more $ from selling electricity from solar panels vs. crops or animals, I would switch to solar panels.
I have lived in California for 60 years. Comparing my lifestyle with other states is no contest, it’s California! I went from city/suburbs to a rural/small town which I would highly recommend. 😂
I think that would be the only way to go to live in California would be to live in a rural area. The state is beautiful but the cities are a mess. Of course this is true in most states. I live in rural NY state and it isn't bad except for the winters and high property tax, but overall costs are low here and nothing like NYC. You can still get a nice house here for $200K, but you will pay a lot of property tax, that's the downside. Utilities are cheap here too because of hydro power from Niagara Falls and abundant water sources. Yeah both states are a mess politically and in terms of crime, overpopulation and high costs in the cities, but country life is still doable because you are at least pretty much removed from all that. To tell you the truth I'd rather be where you are if nothing else for the better climate, but I am pretty comfortable here as well and have been here all my life outside of a brief stint in West Virginia for a couple years when I was younger.
I’ve been here 60 years too. We have done a lot of traveling and I couldn’t imagine living in a better place. I do, however, consider myself lucky to have a nice life here.
I think there is a perfect place for everyone, you’ve just got to find it. I hope those who moved away found what they were looking for. I believe if you are unfulfilled or unhappy about where you live, it’s better to make a change. For us, CA has been a wonderful place to live.
It's mostly transplants that are leaving. And honestly, we're better for it. Our politics really haven't changed all that much. We weren't even the first state to legalize weed recreationally... That was Colorado. Now there's a state that changed politically in a short time.
Your very good at geography, Geoff. But should not let your politics interfere. Housing cost is only one of the reasons CA is losing people and businesses. Failed government polices, teacher unions along with failing education institutions, crime that is government induced, and homelessness are all a larger issue than housing. Democrat policies and liberalism has made the state almost unliveable for everyone but the elite class.
I would point out that COVID related remote work further allowed people to move to regions that were cheaper in 2020. Several of those companies are now mandating a return to office policy, which is forcing the hand of some of those same people to move back to California.
They are leaving because of high living costs, bad politics, crime, unaffordable housing, etc.
@Booz2020 thanks for the encouragement. Biden will win again 😆🤡
They can't handle the good surfing

By far most naturally beautiful state is Alaska but I'll give you CA as number 2

Homelessness isn't a problem everywhere there. Crime is low where I'm at.
Simple: Taxes and cost of living.

That’s a perfect NPR explanation… Zero original thought and misses the actual real reason why people are moving away from California.
Wow this really makes no sense
@@eeroala5132 What's the reason then?

The reason people are leaving this state has nothing to do with geography and climate. It's too expensive here.
Horrible government policies, high taxes, lack of school choice, extremely unfriendly business climate are all more significant than the cost of living - since much of the cost of living has to do with bad policy (save housing prices).
California has no excuse - could be so much better.

Good, keep leaving. You can’t afford it here anyway 😂
TLDR...🙄
Populations statistics come from a number of places not just from the US census. It come from tax rolls voter registrations many other things including reporting from companies on payroll taxes etc.

The Real Estate Industrial Complex. 'Nuff Said.
Then you add the political decisions that enable increased crime with little repercussions, and you get the max exodus, from what is clearly the most beautifully diverse state in the union
IMHO

The geography is called Gavin Newsome.
Gavin Newsome just doesn't go away , the elections to recall this dude were rigged .... our votes didn't count. The politics in California are corrupted, controlled by 4 families ,,, Nancy Pelosi, her nephew Gavin Newsome, the former Governor Brown (Jerry Brown) control the politics of California which results in a business unfriendly environment , a heavily Democrat anti 2nd Ammendment culture, Trump Derangement Syndrome running rampant. The world will end before the Democrats let their deathgrip on California let go. The state used to be a nice place to live. Now it's a tax nightmare because the Democrats have destroyed the business environment for the last 40 years.
I've seen several of these videos trying to make excuses as to why people are leaving California to avoid the truth which is people are tired of Democrat leadership... period
why? california is by far the most powerful US state, *because* of democratic rule.
@@matthewbarabas3052 by most powerful you mean what's the largest mass Exodus from any state in the country's history and all-time crime records,,then yes... You are the most powerful lol 🤡
Mmmm if you’ve seen this many videos and choose to be ignorant then it’s a you problem not a California problem. Yall are so quick to dick ride the hate bandwagon to get political points with other people and it shows 🤷♂️.
@@rogueshadows1033 it’s definitely a California problem 😂 I think most ppl agree w that
It's worth mentioning that California is unique geography is what kept it from being settled for hundreds of years. The Spanish tried from the 1500s until the 1700s. It was the mountain ranges and the oceans that kept people from truly settling there.
Droughts, Fires, Air Pollution, Crime, High Taxes, High gas prices, over expensive homes, State Income Tax of 13%, homeless people everywhere, graffiti
The main reason is the far left politics.
Describe "far left." The ACTUAL definition, not the lie from the fascist traitor MAGA crowd.
According to Fox News. That's not even in the top 3, in reality.
@@SenorJuan2023 Has nothing to do with what Fox News says. Do you even live here? I’m guessing no.
@@tommoore4128 Already said I live in Cali. Also lived in Texas and Florida. Been in USA 58 years.
@@tommoore4128 If you live here Tom, and are unhappy with the politics, why don’t you leave? Go find a far-right political place to be if that makes you happy.
I left in 2019 due to low pay, increasing rent, inability to buy a house, and bad politics making all of that worse
You’re right! California is such a great geography! So why many people are leaving??? Answer: Leftest policies
Californian born and raised. For me what did it was lack of economic opportunities and the weather it was way too hot (Southern California)
Too bad about the ring of fire… I might have considered it otherwise.
The important question about the people leaving California is how the people staying there feel about the people who leave.
Ya Geoff doesn't want to acknowledge this. Topography and mist levels in the mountains are why we are leaving. That's it.
Geoff is a lib so won't say it.
I would point out that COVID related remote work further allowed people to move to regions that were cheaper in 2020. Several of those companies are now mandating a return to office policy, which is forcing the hand of some of those same people to move back to California.
Perfect geography, except for being on a fault line between seismic plates.
