Scott, I've watched all four of your videos and have learned something new in each one. I think you have a great teaching style and outline a nice path for others to incorporate into their photographic journey. I enjoy shooting what presents itself around me (street, landscape, BIF, surfing, family and friends) but have felt for a while that I need to introduce more structure and focus on longer term projects...just the type of guidance you're providing. I really enjoy your content and have learned a lot. I am creative and feel I have a good eye for composition but I've been very random in my photography. I'll just take a camera along where I go and shoot things that interest me. My photos on Google maps have 70 million views. So I think I can take a picture people want to look at. Those are all taken with a cell phone. And certainly aren't fine art.
My SLR seldom gets out of the backpack anymore. And I'm trying to get back in the groove.
You've inspired me to put more effort into the planning and the process prior to even taking a picture. I like the project approach. Thanks for what you do

I agree with being selective and choosing 6-12 images a year to sell / promote yourself, however that strategy won't work on social media. Low follower / low engagement accounts will get close to no engagement on Instagram, you only drive engagement by being active, not in stories but posts and reels.
Absolutely - Doing this on Instagram will ensure your profile will be a wasteland of engagement. Insta hates photographers at this point - it's all about producing reel after reel, they do not reward posts. If you can't do that, you will get almost no interaction.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think there are things besides your main images/body of that you can include in both posts and reels (for example, behind the scenes stuff). Some of the instagram accounts I referenced in the video do a great job of that.
Yeah it's true...I only started on Instagram in 2021 so for me it's pretty much always been like this. From what I understand there was a time when it was a great platform for photographers.

But please don't stoop to click bait titles (third video). Your videos are solid enough where those types of titles just weaken the content.
Thanks so much Leon! I really appreciate the support and feedback. Yeah, I realize that title was stooping. I wasn't really sure how to title that one. I started with a more straightforward title for the first day or two but the video got almost no views. When I changed the title to what you see now, the view count shot up dramatically. I'll keep what you said in mind for future videos.

Just wanted to drop you a line to say how much I loved your video. I've recently gotten into photography, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer. It's taken me out of my comfort zone in a way no other hobby has before.
I've started this cool project where I'm capturing the soul of Toronto by photographing 101 strangers.
It's pretty nerve-wracking approaching random people, but I'm up for the challenge. I hope to capture diverse stories and inspire others along the way!

Being selective is probably the only way to get better. It's a heartbreak but it forces you to understand how you select your work. That's to say : knowing what you want to express and telling what's a good photograph for you. It's a long way... Thanks for this video. It could be provocative (8 images a year !) but it's realistic. I need to add something. Don't throw your average photos away. Some of them could be better than you think. Maybe better than your favorite ones at this point.
Some great points! Yes, never throw anything away. I find some photos grow on me after some time has passed :)
I took a Photoshop class and needed to practice combining images, so some of my not great photos suddenly became useful in making photo collages.

Next level, secret sauce stuff Scott! I've known about the power of themes and projects for quite a few years and have applied it somewhat, for example I have four themes/collections on my website with 12 to 20 photos in each. After watching this I am going to rethink my strategy a little bit, I am currently working on a couple of main themes and a couple of smaller projects, I think I need to narrow it down to one. Anyway loved the video, I actually think of someone just picked one street or their backyard for that matter and took 10,000 photos over a period of time they could end up with an amazing 20 photo exhibition!

Hi Scott - I've watched all of your videos and I have gotten a lot out of each one. You have a wonderful teaching style, complemented by your video editing approach, that brings those nuggets you share into sharp focus.
I just wanted to chime in about your point on output volume. I first observed that a photographer whose work I really enjoyed and admired (named David Fokos, believe it or not!) showed only a very small body of work, even though that was his full-time occupation. Years later, after I began taking photography seriously, I made it a habit to review my "top 10" images of the year. And in doing so, I found that even in a relatively "good" year, I was truly proud of maybe one or two images. Sure, while I made a living creating pictures for money, some years I didn't produce anything I was particularly happy with or proud to share beyond that transactional level.
It's probably been two years since I made an image I really love, and what your videos have motivated me to do is to plan better and get out there more often to consistently work on certain visual themes or problems.

I love studying the Magnum contact prints, they usually have a few decent pics, one or two excellent ones, and the rest are meh. No one takes brilliant photos constantly. It makes me feel more confident that the occasional really good one is enough 😊

Thank you very much for this video. I am really new to my photography journey and gave myself a self-assignment. I work with film and sometimes you get the scans back and are a bit disappointed because i thought, that more pictures turn out good/great. This really puts things into perspective and helped me a lot. I need to be more patient, thank you

I post my photography learning journey, it's been a three year adventure so far. I feel it's important to not be afraid to post less than perfect photos, and when I first started following some professionals they also post less than perfect daily life photos, so that gave me an idea that it's ok. Sometimes I wonder if I should save my better photos for a website only. I don't have a website, just a blog, again, chronicling my learning process. Hopefully in the next few years I can go from learner to more confidence and skill and experience, and maybe make something out of it.
Thanks for sharing. The idea to post only your best images works well when you want to start to build your reputation, especially if you want to sell your photos as prints. Images that may not be your best are great as you said for daily life photos. I sometimes use those for Instagram stories or behind-the-scenes stuff but don't post them as part of my body of work. This advice is surely pretty good, but the downside is that growing an audience will be much harder that way.
It's already almost impossible to grow an audience nowadays online.
It will most likely attract people who already know your name I believe.
I think my pictures aren't too bad, but my followers on instagram are mostly my friends or acquaintances, I feel like nobody care about my stuff... I might have gained 5 followers since 2021.
I know I should be shooting for myself and that the results will make the efforts worth it, but because my audience is inexistant, so I'm unwilling to put the efforts to publish curated content, that's why most of what I post is mostly random.
Thanks for sharing your opinion and experience. I only started on instagram in 2021 and no one knew my name at the time. By following the advice I advocate in this video, I grew my following from 0-8000 followers. So I think this approach does work.
