Terrific show J.D. A few of Paul's quotes were classic like "nuance isn't sexy its important" and "truth in history is just interpretation". Great content!

You are both awesome big fan of both your channels. Burma Week was fascinating last week and looking forward to Great Escape week starting tomorrow on WW2TV.
A big thank you to you both for all of your excellent endeavours.

Great interview! Love his work. So glad I was able to spend 6 days on two different occasions in Normandy. I was able to tour both vertically and horizontally and must say, being Immersed in one sector (UTAH airborne for instance - Utah beach, St Mere, St Come Du Mont, Foucaville, Bridges over Douvre, La Fierre, Road to Carentan...) really helps one to truly get a grasp of what happened.

This is a place I visited years ago and would love to revisit. Very important that this channel keeps getting our history out there. This evil cancell culture is very much present and we need to fight back and keep this nation's history out there and alive.

I imagine there are guides who giv e private tours. People definitely have different amounts of time and interest. When I visited Shiloh, I met a guide who will take people on catered tours to follow the footsteps of their ancestors' regiments. We used a guide for one day in Normandy. For the other two, I hit more of the other sections that were not in our tour, Pegasus Bridge, Deadman's Corner, the British Cemetery in Rainville, the big German Cemetery, Merville Battery, Gold and Juno, and the museum in Caen. France is a big place. I would love to back and spend more time doing just what your guest suggested. The same kind of applies to Gettysburg, where you can see the whole battlefield in a few hours. After 7 trips to Gettysburg, though, there is much I can still learn and see. I can imagine him watching Saving Private Ryan with others. Here I almost was. Must have been fun to do though.

100% agree! I’ve been to Normandy many, many times. Each trip is usually 8 days. I will return to some places but each time I find a new place to go to. Watching these channels provides great ideas and I’ve used them. I like the idea of pursuing an event rather than the area highlights. I might see you there?

I've been watching both of your channels so it's great to see you two together. Since we are coming back towards June, Paul did an epic, longer than The Longest Day the movie, 12 hour live stream last June the 6th. I encourage people to watch that ...perhaps not in one sitting though.
Keep up the great work JD!

I can't help but wonder, how many women are binge watching this channel. I feel like an odd ball here. But I was always that little girl that dressed up to jump in a mud hole, my granddaughter is the exact same way. I'm always realizing how much I wasn't taught in school. It really wouldn't have been that difficult, I suppose that's why I was always so very bored...even though this guy is probably young enough to be my son, I would have loved to have him as a teacher in school, thus is the difference between a profession and a passion 😊

I like Paul :) great idea with the vetical visit of normandy. I have been there this and last year, first was Sword, Juno and the 6th AB parts, this year war Gold and Omaha as well as the 101st and 82nd AB parts. Next year I plan to do Utah and the way to Cherbourg and the Contentin. I think that this way is better, as you both said, since it gives you a better picture on what was all part of the beachheads and also the objectives like Caen and Bayeux, Carentan and so on. I know its not easy and you want to see it all at once but taking your time for each beachhead and objective really paints the picture. Also it helps when other objectives are on the way, so from Germany we had stops at Chartres, Falaise/Argentan, Paris Reims Rouen Bastogne and so on.

There are some very good points made in this video! It drives me insane when things are portrayed incorrectly! There is a local historian here that has included my 3rd great uncle as an area pioneer but excluded my 3rd great grandfather who was here as much as 10 years earlier.... also they have taken information from a man that had the same name and mixed all of their information together then published it in a book!!!!! Infuriating!!! And now for years on end it will be known as fact.

How long should a person who wants a the best understanding tour of Normandy allow for just doing that ? Also how much would it possibly cost to do so without the others expenses such a place to stay and places to eat at ? I guess that I should say to understand it better as what and where everything came about !

Grew up during the '50s, but he's right about the '70s being a WWII revival period. Vets of the war were still everywhere, lot's of movies like Patton, The Eagle has Landed, Murphy's War and TV shows like Combat, 12 O'clock High, Hogan's heroes, etc.

What a fascinating perspective on how a film can influence society for the positive and negative, all at the same time. SPR was a absolutely stunning visual experience. Band of Brothers, to me, is a film for the ages. It brought to mainstream society the “story” of a group of men and their sacrifices. It really pushed WWII to the forefront. It further opened the avenues of ALL WWII history. Great video JD. Thank you.

I love what he said about what is happening now here in America , England and around the world ! His statement on that is very very true ! I'm a post Vietnam War veteran only 5 years after the Vietnam War when I joined the Air Force ! I was in during the IRANIAN CRISIS in the late 1970's serving until January of 1986 so all of the little things as the some people thinks about those things ! But they need to understand at that time it was a very big deal especially for all of us in the military at that time ! What I found strange is that I was in BASIC TRAINING from April of 1978 to the first of June 1978 and we was training IRANIAN TROOPS there at LACKLAND AFB , SAN ANTONIO , TEXAS ! If I remember correctly the IRANIAN CRISIS happened in 1979 ! I believe that we had the Panama , Somalia , Grenada possibly a few others and England had the Falkland Islands during the time I was in the Air Force ! I have tried to forget some of what happened during my time in the military but my nightmares at times won't let me forget !

A remarkable perspective on films and the Normandie campaign, I can 100% relate to Paul in how he got into the WW2 story, exactly the same way for my interest, but Paul went that extra mile and his life has taken off, I believe in a few years there may well be that lull once more as we loose the veterans month after month. Living in Lincolnshire I grew up around airfield after airfield and the interest of what happened there and where these men and women would have been in that momnet in time is very engaging, I can't wait to get back to follow a path exactly like the way in which Paul described as I trace the path of a Canadian Veteran who landed on Juno and Paul has very kindly pointed me in the direction of investigation I need to go, I hope one day I get to meet Paul he is a bit of a hero of mine. Keep the education coming guys.

Your articulation of what is happening to the museums and the sites is 100% I visited Pointe Du Hoc after visiting a very small museum all about the Rangers and the attack on the site in the small town of Grandcamp-Maisy which I know is no longer there, but we got to the site late evening in August and the office was closed, we read the stones and went into the site from the far right hand side, we were able to go anywhere in every bunker in every shell hole, boy some of these my house would fit into, the paths led you everywhere, we exited at the far left of the site thorugh some long wild grass and out via a lane with hedgerow either side of you. We stopped for a moment and looked back at the site trying to take in the views, suddenly the sky was filled with hundred's of butterflies one of which came and sat on my wifes shoulder It just sat there and we watched as the sun began to set and these buterflies were all over the battlefield. We wept the moment was surreal it felt like the soles of the soldiers were disappering away and this one buttefly flew close to us until we reached this lane to leave and it sat there on her shoulder for a few seconds, then it was gone and as we took a look back before walking down the lane the air was clear the butterflies were gone and there was NO sound, just peace and the sound of the sea. The hairs on the back of our necks stood up and I have never felt such emotion. That was special and I have never experienced that since we never will now because that area is now locked off.

Went to Normandy with some veterans from my regiment who were there. It had only been 30 years but for them it was like yesterday. An experience I will never be able to relive as most of them are gone, but the things I heard and learned were amazing.
