That's kind of lame that there was no lord tier unit available from the mausoleum, but it kind of makes sense because its an out of faction racial building. Still I am curious as to what kind of undead skeletal creature the author would have created for the lord class.
I would think that if there was one it would have to be an archlich, a wright, or a death rider. Equivalent to a mage, scout, and warrior respectively. Each would being massive benefits, each would also have their own problems.
Obviously an archlich brings powerful necromantic magic, capable of raising lower tier undead as their own minions, and would have no summoning upkeep cost as an added benefit.
They are capable of casting devasting aoe debuffs that affect morale and mental stability, but not capable of taking a whole lot of damage themselves before being destroyed.
Being an archlich, so long as their phylactery is intact, which is usually kept hidden in a far away place, they will come back again. If it is killed, it was just an astral projection of their soul that resides within the phylactery. This is their method of achieving immortality through necromancy.
Thus they prefer to debuff, and swarm enemies with it's minions before you even have a chance to resist. The price they paid for immortality was their mortal body. Getting exposed means certain death as it can't move the phylactery on its own. They are glasscannons after all, and it's extremely dangerous as their astral death will reveal their actual location as the soul projection returns.
A death wright is a lesser version of a grim reaper. They haven't yet reaped the billions of souls needed to recast their bony body to become one. The only bones in their body are their skulls, and hands. Their skull is their only weak point at this stage, and the only way to kill them as the rest of their body is corporeal.
They have the ability to harm touch as well, but it requires physical contact to work. There are other limitations to harm touch as well. It will only replenish the energy lost, not boost it further. And the death energy replenished is directly limited to how much vitality remains in the victims body. Consuming and defending would be impossible for this kind of creature.
They may have a number of scary abilities but they are quite weak in direct combat. Even just 2 well coordinated low rank warriors could take one down so long as they were careful. However, they are not useless. They make no sound when moving as they float in the air, making them superb assassins. They are looking to become a god of death, a grim reaper after all.
As for a death rider, the aura of death permeanted by these creatures is so thick it causes the land around them to become a permanent dry, cracked, and barren wasteland. Anything caught in it's radius is not destined to live long. Besides being a terrifying existence with this ability alone, it is, still after all, a mounted unit and their lance being pointed at you means certain death.
They are the elite class of a dullahan. Those rare fallen knights that have found their original heads and have been further infused with deathly aura as well as a return of all of the bodies original memories.
No longer driven by the unnatural obsession with finding their heads, they harbor rage and a new resentment against the living. The more resentful the knight feels about how unjust his death was, he becomes even more powerful after the transformation as a result. Even the weakest of these beings is still capable of fighting a rank 4 city lord for a while before being defeated.
It's heavy armor has been infused with its own death energy as well as the blood of countless victims. After countless years of looking for its head, and even more so after the transformation, it isnt for just for show. This death energy makes normal weapons disintegrate instantly upon contact and even magical weapons useless against one. All things rot and die, the essence of magic is no different.
While they may sound like an unstoppable tank, they are particularly vulnerable to purification magic as they have no means to defend against it. It is different from normal magic as it invokes the powers of a god. Against a priest of the same rank they are no match. It would just be like a lamb delivering itself to be slaughtered by a wolf.
I've said the pros and cons of each. Does anyone have a better suggestion for a lord tier undead?
what he 👆 said.
